This is a gem of a place, run by volunteers, who give you a great start to the visit by telling you a bit about Cooktown's history first. It is in chronological order, with many photos, artefacts and well researched information. It is a joy...More

I should be ashamed of myself - but when I learned the centre was "run by volunteers" I had lowered my sights. As it turned out, I couldn't have been more wrong. The displays are very comprehensive and of professional quality. The volunteers who attend...More

Great little centre explaining Cooktown’s trials and tribulations from start to modern day. Informative volunteers that are friendly and know and love their town. Plenty of exhibits and information to see and read about the fascinating history of this town not to forget the war...More

Thoroughly researched, well presented and very enlightening so don’t walk on by. With exhibits and information winding along chronological displays it is not hard to receive an immersion in the life and times of Cooktown. Many of the names we had observed on cemetery headstones...More

This museum was once a school run by Irish nuns, given the sheer size of the place and the fact that it was built by hand at a time when there were no roads (Cooktown only just got sealed roads all the way from Cairns...More

You could spend hours here. Lots to read about Cooktown. It was a shame we couldn't visit the Museum . It's now closed Sunday and Monday. However the History centre was a great way to learn more about Cooktowns history.

Having been taught in school in NZ in the 1960's about the amazing ventures of Captain Cook, and his misadventure with the Great Barrier reef and being forced to repair HMB Endeavour at Cooktown, I had to make it my goal to visit Cooktown. Thus...More

My wife's family dates back to 1854 in Cooktown and these guys no it all. Just amazing how they have amassed so much info about everything Cooktown and its surrounds from the very beginning. The best historical society we have visited.
