The cafe is lovely, but the older gentleman behind the counter behaved terribly when we were in. Berated the young man working there in the middle of the cafe for all the customers to see and hear.I was sat out front and could still hear him. Then he came out to me and said he “didn’t know what the young lad had been smoking last night”. I wish I’d said something to him but I was shocked. I hope the young man who was treated so dreadfully reads this and knows it’s not ok for his employer to speak to him like this.

Had lunch at the Book Barn. Friendly staff...I could not drink the coffee..weak. The toasted cheese and tomato sandwich was not good. Bread was dry. We were given butter to put on the outside of our toasted sandwich. Usually the butter is spread on the out side of the bread then placed in the toaster maker...

I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE. Could spend hours browsing the books.... some really old collections. Got the kids some ice cream and cakes (good cakes!) and myself hot choc & some really good old books (sucker for musty smell of old books). Overlooking Daylesford Lake which has a small playground for the kids.

The deck space is nice near the lake. The serve could be much better. We ordered bruchetta & soup. When we got the food we we're shocked 1slice of bread with roughly 8 tiny cherry tomatoes, few olives here & there & majority was onions. It was nice but not worth $8 for a slice a toast. Potato & Leak soup with a bread roll was tasteless. We were still little hungry & decided to get coffee & cake. Ordered carrot cake. Guess what was the size of the cake. A big slice was cut into small uneven pieces & served. The piece was as big as an inch by inch. We were SHOCKED !! We thought we would sit at the cafe next to the lake & enjoy the food & ambience. We were so disappointed. There are much better cafes in town.

We visited Lake Daylesford yesterday at 4:25pm, my young son (just turned 9) was looking forward to an ice cream from this cafe, he quickly got out the car and approached the cafe, an older man had been packing some things away, a lady was sitting out the front and I watched as my son asked her politely “is the shop closing? “The lady answered yes, I think it is” and she continued to read her book, so my son slowly went to the open door to confirm with the shopkeeper, my son was standing right outside the open door and had not yet stepped inside for the old grumpy many to quickly rush to the door and abruptly slam it in my sons face!!!! We couldn’t believe he had done that! What a terrible old man to do such a thing to a child! Would he have done the same to an adult? My poor son, turned around bewildered by what had just happened.... never before have we encountered such a nasty person! A simple ‘sorry, we’ve packed up for the day’ would have sufficed! Don’t expect friendly service from this man.
