About
We offer memberships and professional, friendly flight instruction in a fleet of modern gliders as well as trial lessons for those wanting to try the purest form of flying there is. Our clubhouse is open to the public and our on site cafe provides a welcome break from your scenic walk or bike ride around the National Park; it serves reasonably priced refreshments, as well as breakfasts and lunches most days - whether it's a slice of toast or a full English! Visit our website for details of how you can soar like a bird over the North Yorkshire countryside; try it and get hooked - you'll be flying solo in no time! We kindly ask visitors to note that: - We welcome visitors to our cafe, but can't guarantee opening times, particularly over winter. Expect our cafe to close early on short days, or in poor weather. - Airfields are dangerous, particularly glider fields; gliders are hard to spot and almost silent when landing. Do not walk across our runways, and keep animals under control.

The blue yonder
Jun 2021
I had Mark a very experienced glider pilot to take me into the blue yonder today. It was an unforgettable trip and well worth the cost of the voucher. Seeing Sutton Bank from above and the white horse is not to be missed!

Brilliant first flight

Decided to learn to fly gliders so came to enquire. Easy paperwork and an hour later I was off on my first flight with a very experienced instructor. Our flight lasted just over an hour and was great fun.

Warm welcome at the cafe

We picked the wettest of days to do a group mountain bike ride along from osmotherley . time we got to the glider club it was biblical rainfall. Covered in mud cold and wet we thought better of the Abbey café with its mousey Thompson furniture and saw a sign for the glider club café.
Top notch they welcomed us with a smile , kept an eye on the bikes and did nt mind the puddles forming on the floor . Great value , good honest food and some good conversation with the regular and frustrated glider pilots.
If your a cyclist put it on your list - Thank you "sons of lycra"

Great cafe onsite from which you can watch takeoff and landings whilst enjoying 50P for tea or coffee and very reasonable meal prices.

Very good experience

I bought an experience flight for my wife’s birthday. Check in was quick and friendly. A short safety video to watch. The instructors were talkative, informative and friendly. The flight was excellent, with good information as the flight progressed. Although a bit nervous beforehand, my wife was beaming when she got back. A recommended experience. The site also has a cafe and parking and staff were friendly, a good place to watch the gliders coming and going.

A great little introduction from friends to use as a base for our walk around the white horse. Extremely good value drinks served by a charming young lady leading to the demolition of the freshly cooked quiche , chips and salad. Excellent value against a backdrop of a big sky and elegant gliders.

Super experience

A 60th birthday present from my dear wife was a flight experience in a glider at the Yorkshire Gliding Club. Staff in the office very friendly and welcoming, paperwork sorted within minutes, had a coffee in the club house and waited my turn. Introduced to the instructor and taken down to the launch area. Parachute strapped on, a quick rundown on how to get out of the glider and to deploy said parachute, all the time thinking I hope I don't need to put this into practice. The instructor who was from Poland was fantastic and I enjoyed the experience immensely. The wow moment is when you suddenly set off behind the tow plane and go over the cliff edge. A great afternoon, weather was good so the views were stunning.

Interesting place!
Aug 2018 • Couples
Visited on the recommendation of some locals in Helmesly to watch the gliders landing and taking off and have a coffee and cake in the cafe. As a spectator you can get up close to watch the gliders taking off which, if you have not seen it before, is interesting. However, the cafe is something else. Firstly it wasn't open. We wandered up the stairs passed staff who simply ignored us to a room stuck in a time warp. 3pm weekday in school holidays. Clearly a good flying day and the cafe is not open. No sign to say it wasn't. It well, just wasn't. Wandered back down passed staff and presumably members, some sitting in the doorway porch. Again not a word spoken. No eye contact. Sat outside on one of the bench for a further 10 minutes. Still not a nod or ow do! Totally ignored. Priceless! Peter Kay needs to take a look at this place. Great material for stand-up. One star because the cafe wasn't open. 5 stars for entertainment potential!
