What a lovely find. We had booked camping and motorhome site on Thirsk Racecourse, just down the Rd and saw it when passing....read about it and decided to walk down to watch Twisters film...staff very friendly, venue small and personal. Great seats, with good leg room, acoustics very good. Worth ÂŁ6 each and 8 mins walk according to Google. Drinks and sweets available and not over priced. Ice cream ÂŁ2/tub...although limited flavours, definitely leave your own supplies at home and enjoy the whole experience of this great venue and local invested venue. Visit and help keep it alive.

Whilst visiting Thirsk my husband and I decided to pay a visit to the Ritz Cinema. Friendly and welcoming, it is one of the oldest continuous run cinemas in the Uk and run by volunteers.

Beautiful building and very comfy seats. It had such a feeling of nostalgia. We had a great evening.

What a delightful old cinema. The volunteers are very friendly and have really done this old cinema proud. Plenty of legroom, choice of stalls or balcony, attractive decor. For the hard of hearing like me, it was a pleasure as the sound system was excellent, clear but not overloud (clarity is required not volume). I didn't need their hearing loop but it worked incredibly well - better than some West End theatres and modern cinemas. On Sundays they even show subtitles. Thank you for a pleasurable experience.

Ive been here more times then I can remember it maybe old and not got 10 screens but it run by some lovely people and it is cheap compared to these new cinemas it also has some history behind it... It is comfortable and has many memories for people who have been going here for a long time. Worth a visit and watch a film at a decent price.... Only problem is as it is small it takes a while for a film you want to see to come on a showing but I suppose if like me I work all the time I usually miss the fancy showing at other cinemas I always know I can catch it here

This cinema could be great and the other "reviews" would certainly lead you to believe it is. However my experience of The Ritz is anything but:

If you go during school time I'm sure it is a lot better, but it is incredibly noisy inside. The area at the top is where all the teenagers sit and mess about, throwing sweets etc off the top. The management don't seem to be too fussed about this. I assume that as they are struggling they don't want to turn anyone away.

The carpets are sticky, I think a mixture of spilt drinks, chewing gum and other unmentionables!

Overall, I would say avoid this place. There are far superior cinemas within a 30 minute drive, the cost isn't far off and they are a LOT more professional.

Visited there for the first time tonight and I only regret not going sooner. The volunteers were so kind and helpful and keep the place really clean. Can't wait to go there again. Thank you to everyone who makes this place magical :)

Excellent cinema does what it is meant to do and is great for those on a budget! It is an old fashioned kind of cinema run by very friendly people and you even get ice cream half way through the film.

I've been going here since a kid and loved every visit, staff are volunteers yet very friendly and welcoming. Prices are great considering it's a self run establishment competing with larger, chain-run cinemas. Highly recommend.

We visited this charming cinema whilst visiting family in the area. It is run by volunteers who are very passionate about their work and do a sterling job. Much cheaper than the larger cinemas and a more satisfying and comfortable experience.
