- AlcesterMartynAlcester, United Kingdom568 contributionsVery knowledgable guided tour of a heritage site that needs more fundingWe took the "Strutt around the Mill" guided tour on a Saturday in October. Sadly there were only two of us but our two guides who were excellent in their knowledge of the mill, and its local history and impact. We were able to get a glimpse inside the "fireproof" factory and its method of construction, and the site of the breastshot water wheel that provided the motive power. The tour largely takes you round the outside explaining the use of the various water courses to power the original four mills. Sadly the Museum’s Trust has decided that it “is not able to run the museum on a financially viable basis”. A £47,600 grant from Amber Valley Borough Council ended in September 2022 and the museum’s Landlord now plans to let the museum space at commercial levels from October 2022. The Trust was informed in August last year that the Leader of AVBC made an Executive Decision to end the funding after more than 25 years of association with the Trust in supporting the operation of the museum and visitor centre, as continuing to operate it “would be incurring annual losses of circa £70,000, which is clearly not sustainable.” I imagine that the landlord is looking to redevelop the space, but whilst there are volunteers willing to impart their knowledge of the historic town of Belper and cotton spinner Jedediah Strutt. I would encourage anyone with an interest in Indistrial Heritage to take a tour. Currently only available two days per week, so do check availability on line.On behalf of the Trustees and our dedicated volunteers thank you very much for your detailed review Martyn and your resounding endorsement of our tours. We are keen to work with the landlord and all the local authorities to be able to expand our tours in the future. - YorkieKeefYork, United Kingdom64 contributionsStrutt's North Mill TourWe took in the Strutt's North Mill tour with Trevor our guide. It was really enjoyable and informative and would recommend it. Incredibly the whole mill complex was run by 11 water wheels. The newest North Mill was built over a 10 metre wide water wheel that ran 5 floors of machinery. The building itself was the first to use cast iron pillars and joists, the first fireproof mill and the forerunner to all the skyscrapers in the world. Even today one section is providing electricity, enough for 500 houses.Thank you for your excellent 5 star review. We are really pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit. Yes we too are also amazed at the extent they harnessed the power of water to run the mill site. There is a more specific Water Power tour run a couple of times each year if you'd like to learn more. Details are on our website https://www.belpernorthmill.org.uk We look forward to welcoming you back to Belper when you next visit the area.Written August 12, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 7, 2024

The tour was brilliant, and the tour guide who's was named Tony, was brilliant. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Well worth it and you won't be disappointedWe're really glad you found us and enjoyed your tour of the mill site. Tony certainly has some lovely stories to tell. - Gstaa23 contributionsFascinating, imposing building steeped in historyBooked the Strutts North Mill tour last week for my sister and I. Val was our guide and her depth of knowledge and enthusiasm was superb. I had driven past the mill on so many occasions and always intended to take the opportunity to learn its history. I would advise anyone to do the same. Fascinating and has encouraged us to return to other heritage walks in Belper. Many thanks to all the staff and volunteers.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 29, 2024
- Mrs HNewport, United Kingdom12 contributionsVery interesting mill visitWe had a talk and tour round the mill area with a very knowledgeable guide. The history of the mills, including their construction, and the cotton industry both locally and further afield was fascinating. There were only two of us on the tour which meant we could ask questions and discuss which was great. Note that these tours only take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We also enjoyed following a leafleted walking route to see the workers' housing and visiting the riverside gardens where there is a cafe and small play area.Thank you very much for your lovely 5 star review. Trevor our guide said he really enjoyed showing such interested visitors around the Mill site. Glad you enjoyed the leafleted walk too, if you are back in the area do look up our other guided walks in and around Belper. We chose to visit last Sunday as the weather was too wet for us to try anywhere else so wasn't expecting much but we actually found it an enjoyable experience. It was lovely to have a guide included in the reasonable entrance fee and she was so knowledgeable and friendly, So sorry I can't remember her name but she certainly had a broad knowledge of the history of the town and the mill. It was fascinating to learn the root to many common sayings stemmed from the industry.
There is also a lovely park next to the mill which I'm sure we would have enjoyed had the weather been more agreeable.

Brilliant museum charting the development of the mills in Belper and their influence o the people and the town.
We followed our tour of the museum with a walk round the workers cottages, led by Ian who was really knowledgeable and a fantastic guide to his tow.
I would recommend this to anyone visiting the town or in deed anyone who has lived here for a while and wondered what those big buildings were for!
Thanks Ian for a very interesting afternoon.

Recently went on the workers cottages tour organised and run from the North Mill. It was an excellent gentle hours walk around the backstreets of Belper with a really well informed local guide called Ian. We would never have found some of the little nooks and crannies he showed us and his stories and historical knowledge really made the town come to life. Definitely well worth doing if you are in Belper. Will certainly be signing up for the Mill and Waterway tours next. Hope the North Mill Museum is able to get the funding it deserves to stay open.

A great piece of industrial and architectural history wrapped up in one building. Very informative tour by a very enthusiastic guide. I really hope that this important piece of our industrial heritage can be preserved alongside the proposed redevelopment of the site.
PS, If you plan to visit Crich Tramway Village as well, visit here first to save money on the entrance fee to the village.

This building is an architectural gem, show-casing innovative techniques developed by the Strutts. An excellent example of social history brought alive for all ages to enjoy.
The guide was informative and the exhibits helped us understand the various jobs within the mill. We learned, in the hour we spent, there how the Strutt mills were central to Belper, not just providing work but also housing, schools and even the river gardens.
This museum is a credit to its local history.

Got tickets for a tour of the mill from the website but also walk in's I think. I'd been many years ago but the tour was updated and new. Quite a few families looking around not on a tour. It was nicely set out with videos, info, original machinery, good explanations of the processes in an accessible way in the huge buildings where it all began.
Tour lasted about an hour and was fascinating to hear how the Mill was the start of the cotton trade, powered by the river. Nice that they had activity sheet for children.
Interesting that the river still provides green energy.
We spent about 2 hours here - volunteers very helpful and the guide a mine of information whilst being engaging and humorous, also considerate to my elderly dad.
Bought some nice postcards from the little shop and a lot of information available on the history.
There was a sign to say that some funding was stopping in April 22 so I guess that public support will be crucial to keep this wonderful heritage centre going. We need the original machines all kept together in the location that they were used to give it meaning and for the stories to be passed on by the knowledgeable people who staff these places to the visitors.
It is a great location, the weir was crashing with water and energising to watch after the flooding this week!
Then had a walk around Belper River Gardens and fed the ducks - very enjoyable afternoon

Sadly the Museum’s Trust has decided that it “is not able to run the museum on a financially viable basis”. A £47,600 grant from Amber Valley Borough Council ended in September 2022 and the museum’s Landlord now plans to let the museum space at commercial levels from October 2022.
The Trust was informed in August last year that the Leader of AVBC made an Executive Decision to end the funding after more than 25 years of association with the Trust in supporting the operation of the museum and visitor centre, as continuing to operate it “would be incurring annual losses of circa £70,000, which is clearly not sustainable.”

Went for an impromptu trip to Belper today and didn’t know the area, but thought we would have a look round and stumbled upon the Strutt Mill Tour £5 for adults and free for under 16s .
It was absolutely brilliant the tour guide was so informative and me and my 14 year old son enjoyed the tour so much . It lasted about an hour and we learnt so much so if you’re in Belper or fancy an afternoon out of you live in the surrounding areas it’s definitely worth a visit.
It’s also located next to the River Gardens in Belper which is a nice place to have a picnic and if you have the time you can book the boats and go on the River .

We thoroughly enjoyed our informative tour around Strutt's North Mill today. Seeing the machines and the foundations of the building and how it was heated and where the water wheel was connected- was amazing.
Such a shame there is only one month more for people to visit this World Heritage Site.
The volunteers are knowledgeable, so polite and caring.
Don't be put off by the entrance - there are hidden gems inside.

The North Mill museum may close in September 2022 and this would be tragic. The site's heritage significance is huge while the building itself is a fascinating structure. The volunteer guides bring the storey of the mill site to life describing and showing how the antique machinery was used and how the beautiful Derwent river was harnessed for power.
