We decided to visit the Rum story, I must admit I expected a poor display but I was pleasantly surprised, very helpful and friendly staff who took the time to explain the attraction, interesting stories when looking round and to finish off a little tot of local rum. Well worth a visit if your in the area

Went for a bit of ancestral research but was really impressed and pleasantly surprised. The museum is excellent; informative, interesting and thought-provoking; the slavery exhibition was particularly moving. No staff on hand throughout the museum but the assistant in the gift shop was really lovely and helpful. Would definitely recommend!

The Rum Story tells the part the town played in the rum trade and the slave trade with the founding members of Jefferson's bonded warehouse as the site for the attraction and so many authentic items are on display, including the original office which was used in the movie "Miss Potter". There is a dark air in some areas but... More

This sounded like a worthwhile thing to do in Whitehaven and it was. We arrived only an hour before closing on Christmas Eve and they generously cut the price of admission while asking us nicely to make sure we were out before closing time. We had about time to see the whole museum, which is a well-done journey through the... More

Been to the Rum Story many many time's as I once lived in Whitehaven, called in today for a pot of tea to share with my brother Alan whoes down from Edinburgh for a short stay. A history of the Jefferson family business of Plantation owners, sugar production and rum distillation in the original premises. Very interesting and informative with a lot of original materials on show. I would have given this a 5 star rating but for me it lacked the "wow" factor - perhaps more interactivity (eg live players in character) would have helped,... More

I had been before and was very impressed last time this time it was even better. As I walk with a walker was able to access everywhere with ease. Information very good it even smelt like a Sudan warehouse and rum distillery. Lovely cake and rum samples at end. Very helpful and friendly staff. Coffee very cool.
