Worth to walk
Sep 2021
A long walk but a lovely spot.
We walked from Sedbergh along the valley. It took over 2 hours each way, but was really worth it.
Lovely views and wonderfully quiet

Lovley walk and views
May 2021
Visited on Wednesday 19th May 2021 After visiting Raby Castle/Locomotion we drove back to Sedbergh and stopped off at the Cross Keys Temperance Inn on the A683 and I walked to the nearby Cautley Spout Waterfall. Parking at the layby was tight as there is only space for a few cars, but you have a sign straight away directing you towards the path that leads to the spout. The walk to the base of the spout from the road is circa 2km and though listed as only a 9m elevation change it felt a lot more in terms of incline. I had limited time as my partner stayed in the car so restricted myself to the base. Additionally both in view and discussing with a returning walker who had left her husband at the base the walk up the side of the waterfall looked and she said felt quite precarious and was fundamentally like walking up a set of stairs so I think you will have to be quite fit to attempt. Stunning views either way and a lovely way to spend an hour or 2. The temperance Inn looked nice and had a tea garden which my partner should have utilised rather than sit in the car for an hour, as the garden gives a nice view of the valley the path to the waterfall goes through so the progress of walkers could be monitored.

Beautiful even in the rain
Jun 2021 • Friends
Not an easy walk a vertal ascent up to the peak of the calf fell, beautiful water full even in the hammering rain. Around a 12km loop we completed if you wanted a few hours of exploring. Walking boots advised as not all the paths are well worn and can be uneven and slippery.

Nice Walk!
Oct 2020
Quiet an easy walk, lovely views and well worth it to see the ‘Spout’. Dog friendly. Parking however can be an issue if lots of people are visiting at the same time.

Great shortish walk on a sunny day
Sep 2020
Fairly easy for the most part, a little more testing up to the base of the fall and then challenging to the top. Lovely views all around.

Lovely scenic walk
Sep 2020 • Couples
The walk along towards the spout is steady, relatively flat and just over a mile long if you park next to the Cross Keys inn, it’s a little rocky in places but the majority of people will be able to get there no problem at all. Once there it’s quite a steep incline to the top of the waterfall, well and truly worth it but make sure you’re wearing suitable footwear and bring some water and some food as no doubt you’ll want a rest at the top or half way. Definitely worth a visit I absolutely loved it, panoramic views all round very beautiful, even the walk to the bottom of the spout I would definitely recommend.

Very Well worth the walk
Sep 2020 • Couples
We began our walk expecting a pleasant but shortish walk.

When we arrived at the start of the cascades, the scale of the waterfall slowly became clear.

There were great views at every turn, enticing us to climb further up the increasingly steep path.

We loved the views. We loved the walk.

Thank you

England’s Highest Waterfall

Free parking by the footpath entrance. A lovely picturesque walk to the foot of the falls. We climbed to the top which provided spectacular vistas and was great fun and all this without expending a single penny. This is a genuine must see.

Fantastic

The Howgills are beautiful with many great walking routes but the descent down Cautley Spout has to be one of the highlights. Care is needed as the path is not easy but if you take your time, it’s so well worth it. The views are stunning.
