This low head dam sits across the River Leven and just to the west of Newby Bridge. There’s a viewing area with seats, which is nice on a sunny day. Nothing amazing to see. The narrow Newby Bridge that takes you to the viewing point is pretty, but annoying as it’s so narrow.

When it rains or snows on the Northern fells in Cumbria, the water flows via 4 key rivers into the North end of Windermere (it's NOT a lake) and flows out through the South into just 1 river, the Leven.
This 4:1 flow ratio with a 2-3 day delay means that the Leven experiences some very high water levels and disastrous flooding along its banks from Newby Bridge, through Backbarrow to Haverthwaite where the river expands and flows into Morecambe Bay.
Newby Bridge is the start of the bottleneck, the lovely Swan Hotel and downstream Whitewater Hotel suffered badly in the 2009 and 2012 floods.
Watching these flows over Newby Bridge weir is impressive as well as fascinating.

Many visitors fail to explore up Station Road (opposite the Swan Hotel, signposted Finsthwaite and Backbarrow) passing the River Leven weir, towards Newby Bridge Halt (for the steam railway to Lakeside).
Walk up 25 metres and on the left you will find a viewing station with seating looking across the weir, this is a lovely place to sit, contemplate or have a picnic!
If you look over the stone wall down into the water above the weir you will see many coins, tourist visitors have started treating this as a 'wishing well'!

We were nearby and having heard our friend talk about the weir and bridge, we decided to stop there.

There's not much to see in the village but it was nice spot to relax and chill out really

A stroll downriver from the whitewater hotel, a very nice place, well worth the walk. A good place to watch the canoeists.

Contains water, ducks and flows more quickly after heavy rain. A tiny viewing area has been thoughtfully added.

Our Hotel "The Whitewater Hotel and Leisure Club" was situated between the Bridge and the Weir so we were able to enjoy this as part of our hotel experience.
