We drove over Hardknott on a perfect sunny day, with little traffic about. Stunning views all around. Its very tight - single track with passing places and very steep - up and down. We didn't meet another car - it would be considerably more complicated...More

Came over the pass at night on our way to Boot. In places it’s has gradients of 1/3 and 180 degree bends on a single track road and sheer drops. Worse when you come to a rise and can’t see the road ahead or which...More

This rd consists of two passes , the first is a steep one but the second going towards the Roman fort is wow, views are very good indeed, when it says hair pin, it means it. In places you cannot see the end of bend as...More

Not for the nervous or inconsiderate driver Amazing views on the way up and down - and up and down again 🤪 Read the road well ahead and use the passing places - give priority to cars going uphill - you’ll be fine 👍👍👍

Best tackled out of the peak season when the roads are quieter and probably best not attempted if you're not a confident driver. Small cars are probably easier to drive around the tighter switchbacks (it's harder to judge the edges of the bends in a...More

I love driving over here in winter without the queues of traffic. Summer can be laborious but the views and scenery is stunning. Definitely the best way to cross the lakes

Fun, scary in places but well worth it. If you like driving you’ll love this road. Go out of season to enjoy the scenery without having to pull over every two minutes and find a stop to let someone pass. Single track road with little...More

Absolutely loved driving over the pass today, even though I got a bit nervous about snow up the top! It’s definitely not a road for the faint hearted but if you enjoy these kind of roads it’s a must! Regarding the previous comment about campaigning...More

If you are going to do the passes don't forget about Honister pass, plus Kirkstone pass via a road called "The Struggle".

Hi Sarah, in my opinion both options are a nightmare. Cars are always coming in both directions and passing can be a challenge. Probably best if you can get there earlier as I would expect less traffic would be around then... More
