About
The Civic Archaeological Museum of Vetulonia describes the history of the territory hosting, according to a chronological-topographical order, finds from the remains of the inhabited area and the necropolis of Vetulonia, but also from the territorial area controlled by it. In the seven rooms of the museum are preserved the testimony of more than a thousand years of history of one of the capitals of the Etruscan world, from the Villanovan period to the Roman period. Extraordinary funerary objects from the orientalizing period (720 - 600 BC) , especially due to the presence of locally produced gold jewelery, testify the power and the richness of the etruscan aristocracy that has ruled the city and the territory.

We knew nothing about the once sea bay that separeted Roselle and Vetulonia, And nothing about how they competed in importance. With every new knowledge about this people we would take our hat off and bow to them and their technical expertice! The museum is a jewel, but, as most Italian museums they must be better to present their knowledge in more languages than Italian! However, Vetulonia is a very pleasant and interesting place to visit. Take a seat in the main street ristorante and breath the atmosphere of past times!

We toured the museum, the active archaeological site down the hill, and then made the short drive to the tombs further down (Via di Sepulcri) It was all very interesting and we learned a lot about the Etruscans. As another reviewer mentioned, it is amazing what they were able to build and make that long ago. At the archaeological site, staff member Alessio spent 45 min talking with us and teaching about the structures and items found there, and even sent us with a picture of relics he found recently! This was a nice and educational way to spend a few hours while staying in Vetulonia.

a little museum with a good overview over the Etruscan places of the area, with changing special exibitions. In summer too hot.The museum is in Vetulonia, one of the impotant places of the Etruscan time near the sea (it had a port!).

We didn't make it to the actual museum due to time constraints but stopped at the small Etruscan city archeological site and then stopped at a handful of different Etruscan tombs scattered down the side of the hill leading out of town (via an unpaved but navigable road). The sites are all well signposted and explained in multiple languages. The structures are partially restored in some cases which adds to their impact. Very cool and not really mentioned at all in our guidebooks! So a welcome surprise.

I am not a museum person but this one was fascinating We spent over an hour here looking at relics that dated back to 3 BC and further. Some of the items looked as if they had been made in modern day conditions. How they managed to create these items back then is literally mind-boggling. Your ticket also gets you in to the excavations on the edge of the village. Do not go on a Monday as they are closed but do go. Have your cup of coffee first as we could find nowhere to get one. It may well have somewhere in season.

We took a short trip from Castiglione della Pescaia to Vetulonia on a slow afternoon. We parked by the cementery and found the museum after 2 minutes walk uphill. What a surprise to find such a well-planned and interesting museum in this small and crumbling medieval village! The halls are organized in chronological order where findings from different Etruscan tombs and necropoli are displayed. All signs are in both Italian and English, and there are printed glossaries in English and other languages with translations for displayed objects such as 'bracelet' or 'cauldron'. Everything is very pedagogically explained and manage to illuminate the history of the Etruscans very well. This place is definitely worth a detour!

With an outstanding, enthusiastic team of young archeologists, this museum revitalizes the cultural life surrounding Vetulonia and Castiglione della Pescaia. During summer time, many cultural events are worth the detour : kid's activities (cooking etruscan, etc.), conferences for adults and many more.
