About
One of Mexico's most popular cruise ports, Costa Maya Port welcomes travelers to endless seaside fun in the Yucatan Peninsula. There are plenty of beach bars where you can rent a cabana by the waters and grab a refreshing cocktail at the swim-up bar. Both artisan and luxury shopping areas are within walking distance too. Swimming with dolphins and feeding birds at the aviary are two of the top family-friendly activities here. If time permits, take a day tour with a local guide to experience Costa Maya's Chacchoben Ruins which showcases over 3,000 years of Maya history. – Tripadvisor

    Great value for large family
This is perfect if you have young kids. You could sit in nice chairs and swim in the pool. Our kids don't have long attention spans yet so we got our beach time and pool time and had a few drinks without having to book any transportation, this was immediately near the ship, walking distance. You could also get your messages with the free wifi. We didn't do the dolphin thing but you could watch other people.
Our ambiance is completely familiar, and it's great to read that you had an amazing moment here with us, we hope to see you soon again here in your next vacations!

    Was just ok
First time to cruise to Costa Maya (Carnival Mardi Gras). We rented a golf cart ( had 2 speeds putt putting or racing). Was a great experience full of laughs all the way to and from mahahual. After the stressful golf cart ride we went to the spa near the Costa Maya port. I did the Mayan bath while my friend did the hammock massage. We both enjoyed our treatments. If ever there again will definitely go back to the spa.
Thanks for sharing us your complete experience, and finally, you found a small oasis here with us! We hope to see you in your next trip and enjoy our spa again!

    Cheap beach trip
Good Value I don’t pay for expensive ship “ adventures” so I did some research on what I could do on the cheap. After going through obligatory souvenir and pool area( u get a chair if u buy drinks and food), I ventured on to the taxi area wanting to go to a beach. I talked to the guys in the taxi area and found exactly what fit the budget. You buy an “ experience “ at el fuerte hotel and beach. 4$ cab ride and another 15 buys a beach lounge chair and a mixed drink. It’s not the most exciting beach but it was perfect for the price and “ experience”. It’s actually a cove with the beach farther out which, presumably u could venture out to, but not recommended due to sting rays and other sea creatures. There is a very friendly pelican who frequents the beach(Peli) and waits for the fishing boats to provide for him. Water is waist to shoulder deep and bottom is rockless and Sandy. Didn’t plan to enjoy it, but it was a very pleasant day considering the price.
You are lucky to find us! It's great to read that your experience were great, and your drinks fulfilled your expectations. Thanks for enjoying your day with us and we hope to see you soon!

Best cruise port I've been in
Just got back from my 11th cruise. This Costa Maya port was the best I've ever been in. It wasn't just the usual tourist trap shops and overpriced bars. There was a wonderful show of Mayan flyer dancers on the tall pole. There was a small zoo-like area with parrots and flamingos....and yes shops and bars. One bar had a nice big pole, beach area with chairs, tables, and hammocks. It was the cleanest and nicest port I've ever got off a ship in. We didn't even leave the port and still felt like we'd had an outing.
Hi!, thank you very much for visiting us and sharing your experience with us. We hope to see you soon! We are glad you had an amazing time at Costa Maya.

Amazing Port to Spend the Day
This port has fantastic shopping, two free pool areas with hammocks / swim-up bar / chairs in the water, an aviary with rope bridges ($14.00 USD per adult) that looks over the port shopping, a dolphin encounter (price per person) that looked fun, and several food options. Don't miss the "Dance of the Flyers". Of the cruise ports we've been to, this one is the best one for "just staying at the port" vs. going on an excursion.

    It's a cruise port.
This cruise port had various things for you to do and see; for those who didn't want to go on a excursion. If you want to do an excursion there are a variety of things to choose from. I did find it to be very crowded even though there was only 2 ship in port. Did read that the dock was long and it is long but doable unless you have mobility problems.
Hello parrottdize! We appreciate your kind review! We are happy to read you had a good time at the port. Thank you for recommending us, we hope to see you soon!

    Navigate This Port
This particular port is very is vibrant with people and culture. They have a free pool to swim in and quite a number of shops to walk around in. One of the dolphin excursions can be seen as well so you can watch from the sidelines the dolphins. My number one tip for shopping around is not to buy at the first place you see. There are many other shops in the area that may be selling the same thing and they are willing bargain down a better price for it. Also.....don't shop at the shops closest to the entrance. They have a tendency to be way over priced compared to the shops just a few feet away from them.

    Hidden gems in Costa Maya
The Port at Costa Maya has several hidden gems. There is a large pool with waterfalls and swings and a swim up bar with popular dance music playing just as you get off the dock. There is no charge for use of the pool but you must patronize the local establishments. Drinks aren’t cheap but they are good and well worth the cost. The food at the local restaurants is great and priced appropriately. You really don’t need to leave the port to have a good time in Costa Maya.

Worth the $12 to see so many beautiful birds and better than what we expected!
This cruise port has various things to do, including a swimming pool and shopping but if you are a bird lover, you have to visit the aviary there. For $12 you follow the bridges to each little hut and see some of the most beautiful birds ever. You get to go into their cages at each one of them. So many colors and sounds. You can spend as long as you want to in there and we sure did spend some time in there. It was well worth the $12 and our daughter enjoyed them so much. It does have an area that goes over top of the dolphin area and you can watch them however long you want.
Hello mitsugirly! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this detailed review. We are so happy to read how much you and your daughter enjoy our Aviary, it is our pleasure to provide unique experiences for you! We hope to see you soon so we can share more memories with you! Have a great day!

There's so much available in the port to see and do.
This was our 1st time getting off the ship in Costa Maya. The port area alone had so much going on. The flamingos are nice to see, as well as the natives pole routine. The pool is huge and has a swim up bar, but we didn't get in. There are of course a lot of shops and stands full of merchandise. We found the taxi area and asked to go to Krazy Lobster because we heard about the $20 massages. However, the cab driver chose to listen to the 3 younger passengers who they added to the cab and take us to some place next door to it so beware of that. The driver was not in the van when they said they only had $20 and didn't know how they'd get back. Anyway where we ended up, they tried to tell us was also owned by the owners of Krazy Lobster. They pointed out Krazy Lobster and started walking us to loungers. We asked about massages and they told us $25 for 30 minutes or $45 for an hour. I told them we will just walk down to Krazy lobster because they do $20 for an hour long massage and I pulled up a screenshot I took from their page to prove it. They said okay we will do it for $20, so we both got our massages and paid them $25 each. Then we were led to loungers and ordered 1 drink each, and told them no tab we will pay when we get them. Immediately we had a vendor in our face every 30 seconds trying to sell us something. Hubby bought 1 thing, we finished our drinks fast and went back to port. The vendors were just too much! Back in port we decided to get some Gelato at the cute little Gelato shop. We shared a nice sized cup with like 4 different flavors and it was pretty good. After that we walked around a bit more and made our way back to the ship.
Hello NoSugarCoatingz! Thank you so much for sharing this detailed review! We are happy to read how much you enjoyed the port and the many amenities and shows we have for you. We are sorry to read you had an unpleasant experience outside the port. We recommend you take port experiences on your next visit, so you can enjoy your time better. We hope to see again very soon so we can keep sharing a good time with you. Have a great day!

There are two positive things I can say about this port:
1. The architecture is nice - it's kind a theme-park style houses in Mayan style set in a maze of little alleys. But, the establishments set in them sell overpriced drinks, food, souvenirs and touristy stuff at inflated prices. You can find them double cheaper if you go to Mahahual beach.
2. Considering shopping there the only bargain place is a Diamond center, where you can buy tax free jewelry and watches (the watch I bought in Miami was 20% cheaper here).
They have a big nice pool, but to use it you must purchase again inflated priced drinks. You have both of them (the pool and drinks) couple hundred meters away on your ship for free, and in the end, who desires a pool on Caribbean?? So, head to the Mahahual beach.
The cruise port doesn't have its beach, in fact I saw one from the ship but it seems it's not operational as there was noone there all the time. Therefore again, head to the Mahahual beach - it's 20 min walk or 10$ taxi ride.

Try to avoid any human contact at the port. They'll trick you and lie to you by saying you won't be able to find a ride to town etc. All they want is to sell you really expensive packages which is worth little if you just go there in person. I would rather deal with local people directly.
Simply walk out to find the trolley - $4 per person one-way ticket, which takes you to the beach area (i.e., downtown Mahahual). Try not to buy any "all inclusive" packages. Simply jump off of the trolley, walk along the street and check out the places. We eventually went to The Krazy Lobster and spend only $35 for all 5 of us (drinks, snacks and tips). Plenty of beach chairs / shades and kayaking is free. Adding the cost of trolley ($20) and taxi back to port ($20), and souvenirs we spent $100 in total. If you buy an "excursion" or all-inclusive package, $100 would barely cover two visitors.

Upon disembarking from your ship, there is a very looooong walk on the pier, dropping you into a man made maze of shops, activities, all designed to keep you wandering around. There are no signs showing the way to exit the port area. Shops, activities, all are designed to demand your attention. Once you do find the exit, there are several places where you think you have left the port. You are incorrect. The real exit is almost to the "Mayan Pyramid" about 1/4 mile down the road. That is where you will get your excursions not booked through the cruise line, or booked in the port. For those who have mobility problems, there is a small shuttle going the length of the pier, free, (but they do request a tip) I would not recommend this port for any trip other than once.

This was our first stop at Costa Maya and we chose to just visit the port area. Overall we felt that the facilities were very good and a great deal of attention went into creating a place where cruisers could feel safe and still have an enjoyable time.

It appeared that some regulations might have been in place to keep vendors from being overly aggressive which made the shopping experience enjoyable vs the "Nassau experience"

A downside to this experience is that local made items were hard to find. Most everything we found came from China and could be found online if one wanted to get it. A local vendor mart would have been great.

Overall, I see a lot of potential for this port if the growth continues in the direction it appears to have taken to this point.

We did not venture outside the point so I cannot speak to security or other areas.

This trip had us going to Costa Maya and Cozumel. Cozumel is beginning to be Nassau #2. Once outside of the main port shopping area it was a free for all with the vendors trying to pull you into their stores.

We did not do an excursion in Costa Maya and decided to stay and shop. Well we found an Aviary in the middle of the shopping madness. This Aviary was worth EVERY part of the $12. You got to interact with many birds. You can feed them and they come to you. Honestly the best $12 self guided tour you can ever take.

I recommend doing the Mayan Wellness Retreat for a truly unique experience. There were 5 small healing rituals included with the piece de resistance being the unique hammock massage. Also included access to the beach and pool with swim up bar. This is next to the dolphin experience so you also get a free glimpse into the dolphins.

$5 beer everywhere in port. The price of food was incredibly high, so we didn’t eat at all. $16 nachos.

Cantina Latina gives you free WiFi if you purchase something but the password does expire after a few minutes so you have to get a separate password again. Luche libre wrestling was kind of underwhelming.

Really liked the show where the maya warriors go up and down the pole in the center of the port.

Uchbenkah Blue Lagoon Carnival Excursion in Costa May, Mexico on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 (Marti Gras).
Shame on Carnival for offering this completely deceitful excursion. The best part of the excursion was when we left to go back to the ship. Knowing what I know now, I would not go on this excursion even if Carnival paid me $69.99 to go. This was our 15th cruise and without question, this was our worst adventure ever. Rather than a day of relaxation, it turned into multiple days of stress for my wife and me. After multiple conversations, Carnival only offered a 50% refund, plus their lack of empathy added undue stress and even anger to my vacation. I’m extremely disappointed in their customer dis-service.
Just to touch on a few of the low points…1. Flat and watered-down drinks. 2. The Blue Lagoon was more like a Green Muddy River. 3. Explicit rap music playing on a loudspeaker. 4. Undercooked chicken and vegetables (I didn’t try the mystery meat). 5. I’m not sure if the workers were unfriendly or just didn’t speak English!
We always try to book our excursions via Carnival because we believed that they had been vetted by their knowledgeable and caring staff. We also felt that they’d guarantee our satisfaction. Consequently, I was completely shocked when they showed almost no empathy when we complained. In fact, the ship’s excursion manager hung up on me during our conversation about our experience. This was a lesson learned for sure.
I had to laugh about the following note I found on the Carnival excursion website: “The Best Price Guarantee. Find a better price for any excursion we offer and we will refund you 110% of the price difference!” However, they only offer a 50% refund for an absolutely terrible experience.

Arrived on Celebrity Equinox and were disappointed that there is no longer a shuttle for the very long pier here. Also found the area at end of cruise pier very very crowded. We knew we were going to take a taxi to Mahahual to get away from the crowds and have a relaxing day, but it is now much more difficult to exit the designated cruise ship shopping area to get a cab into town. Several of the previous exits have been closed off & they now make you walk all the way around the pool past every shop.
Once we managed to get to Mahahual we were very pleased. We had good inexpensive lunch & drinks at 40 Conones & were also able to use their beach facilities.

Don’t expect to use the port pool unless you’re willing to pay $15 up for drink and $15 up for any appetizer from chair guards. No place to set your pack down otherwise or towells.
Wasted too much time to take shuttle to town. Was hot and the pool would have been nice. Shops priced in dollars. Same stuff in most.
Dolphins are off limits for photos in their pool. Most shop staff stare at their phones. Stay on ship or try the village.

This port is very unique. First, it is exposed to the winds so it seemed a little more difficult for docking of ships. Once you leave your ship you have a rather long walk compared to most places to get from your ship to the terminal, but the view is lovely. Once you get to the port terminal there is a lot to see and do. There was a pool, birds, flamingos, and more shops and restaurants than at most other ports I have been to. The downside was the the cost of food and drinks here was more expensive than most ports and far more expensive than what you will find in the old fisherman's village a mile or two south of the port called Mahahual. A taxi is less than $5.00 or you can rent an electric bike for the day for around $50.00 which is super. It is also very difficult to find the exit to get out of the port terminal; we walked in circles.
