Stopped in Costa Maya on a cruise and took an excursion to Mahahaul and we loved it. We went back a year later to explor the town more and we will be back. It is a perfect location to get away from the crowds and snorkel, fish and relax.

This beach is perfect for a “getaway” but mind you it’s not a nature preserve or even has a secluded spot. It’s narrow and full of beach clubs and massage tables and vendors. It normally caterers to day trippers from the cruise ships. But during COVID it’s quieter and more bohemian. It’s great value and the restaurants are just ok. Over all it’s perfect for a beach escape with drinks and beer. Not yoga and nude sunbathing, that I guess would be TULUM

We came at a time when there were no cruise ships and the beach was beautiful and so relaxing. Highly recommended.

Hubby and I visited Mahahual Beach, with our dog, many times during our two-week stay outside of town in Rio Indo in August 2020. The beach and Malecon (reviewed separately) were quiet compared to pre-COVID times. The area was safe, day and night, and provided many dining and souvenir shops although many were closed. Everywhere accepted USD. Locals walking the beach will stop to sell their wares to anyone visiting the beach and they have many unique items. Much of the ocean near the Malecon is sectioned off for use by customers of specific restaurants or dive companies but the beach was open to walk. Be warned about the “hawkers” on the street behind the Malecon who lure you to their beach restaurant - we got suckered at El Faro (reviewed separately) that way. I spoke with a PhD student conducting her dissertation research and she said most of the current tourists were from other areas of Mexico, with only a few coming from the US and Europe. The water was beautiful and the stroll enjoyable. Watch out for stray dogs that may be territorial – we had issues with a few attacking our leashed dog. I hope you enjoy the photos I shared. Be sure to read the reviews of my other adventures and see more pics of my pup! *Thank you for reading my review! Please click the “thumbs-up” below. :)

This place is absolutely beautiful. We rented a cart and drove here. The food and souvenirs are cheaper. We are glad that we ventured off and didn't stay in port this day.
