We visited Costa Maya’s on our recent NCL cruise to Central America. My family includes my husband and 12 and 14 year-old children. We booked a private boat tour with Marco as our tour guide to see Bacalar Lake, and we had an amazing time. Everything went smoothly, which seems so rare these days! He provided cold water bottles on arrival and we rode in an air conditioned van to Bacalar. Along the way (over an hour), he provided helpful and interesting information about the area the entire time. Once there, he showed us where to change into our swim suits. Then we enjoyed a beautiful excursion on the lake. It really does have seven (or more) shades of blue. We rode in a nice boat with comfortable cushy seats and a roof. It was a lovely day and we stopped a few times to enjoy the lake and get in the water. He showed us different cenotes and told stories about the lake’s history. He provided cold water and sodas on the boat for refreshment. On the way home, he stopped on the roadside and got us the sweetest pineapple and mango that I have ever tried. We visited the Mahahual lighthouse and ended our tour with super yummy local ice cream near the port. Highly recommend this experience. You won’t be disappointed!

We (me, my husband, my mom, and our 2 teenage sons) had the pleasure of doing a private tour with Costa Maya Adventours to Chacchoben this week. Pre-cruise communication was great and Marcos sent a text confirming meeting time and place about an hour before our tour. Marcos warned us that the port can be confusing (it is) but we had little problem finding him. Marcos used a map and gave us a quick introduction to the area before handing us over to Carolina (our guide) and Saul (our driver). Carolina was a lovely person and an absolute fount of information. I was especially impressed that Carolina walked with my mom matching her slower pace and choosing safer paths for her. Saul was a very safe driver who accompanied us to the ruins, helping us with our bag, and making sure we stayed hydrated in the heat. We’ve done many private excursions and ai have to say that this was one of the best.

Carlos, our tour guide, and Luzio, our driver, were friendly, professional, animated, and extremely patient and accommodating with our group's many questions and special requests. The Bacalar 7 Color Lagoon was absolutely beautiful and the water was so refreshing. On the way there, Carlos pulled out a map of eastern Mexico and provided us with interesting historical information about the town of Bacalar. After the lagoon tour, we had a lunch of delicious tacos (You MUST TRY the chicken mole taco -- It was to die for!!!!). Then we walked over to see the fort and have our picture taken in front of the Bacalar sign, checked out a couple of souvenir shops, and headed back. On the way back to the ship, Carlos had Luzio stop and get us some fresh sliced pineapple from a roadside stand. It was out of this world! We could not have been more pleased with the service we received.

My family of 9 with 2 seniors and 3 kids booked the tour to Bacalar. First issue, when we arrived at Costa Maya Port, we couldn't find the guide, the instructions were confusing and when we tried calling he picked up once and did not pick up again, so all our us old and young family members were walking in the heat for a long time before we could find him. Second issue, the website says they'll provide lunch and fresh fruit, but when we were on the boat for a while and I asked when we'd have lunch, the guide said oh no the tour you booked did not include that. I showed him the screenshot of what I booked so he said ok I can order something on the way back. So my big family had nothing to eat until late afternoon. Third issue, we kept telling him we needed to be aboard by 6:30pm but he said oh it'll be fine we'll have plenty of time, and it's just a minute walk from where we'd drop you off. Guess what, we were literally running (poor my parents with bad knees) and it was at least 5 minute running before we could get to the ship from where they dropped us off. Fourth issue, the driver had to speed to make us back to the ship but the whole time it was so scary and dangerous with him passing by many trucks/buses/cars, that we were scared for our lives. We gave him a tip thinking as long as we made it back to the ship ok then it's fine but honestly they didn't deserve a dime for putting us through so much stress.

It's unfortunate because Bacalar was beautiful but what my family talked about that tour now was always our horrible/almost missed the ship. We were the last family that the captain was waiving us to get on fast because they were already starting closing.

Do yourself a favor and avoid booking them!

Kaylee, We are sorry to read that our excursion did not meet your family’s expectations. We’ve never experienced a family getting so lost in our little port after 18 years of offering tours at Costa Maya. To help future clients, we’ve updated the instructions & map in order to be extra clear on how to exit the port, notwithstanding our instructions clearly indicate it is a 20 minute walk from the cruise ship dock to the meeting point and strongly recommend you print the map for reference, viewable here: https://www.costamayaadventours.com/map/ In defence of our guide, he was at the meeting point @ 10:30 am for your 11am tour. He started calling the number provided on your reservation at 11:40 am because was concerned that you were lost. There was no answer. He called 3 times (every 10 minutes, as per our policy) His phone records show only 1 incoming call (from a different number), which was dropped just after answering at 12:23 pm. His records show he returned the call at 12:24 pm to discover that your family was very lost in the port and he provided very clear instruction on how to exit. One of your younger family members arrived at the meeting point at 12:30 pm. We were able to get special permission to retrieve you and your elderly family members with the assistance of our transportation provider, as a one-time pick-up (normally prohibited by MARSEC security regulations). When the driver took him to where he thought you were, we were all surprised you were no longer inside the port anymore and had actually ALMOST made it to our meeting point (you were 100 metres short). This +110 minute delay caused the tour to leave at 12:52 pm. Our records show we arrived at the Bacalar dock at 2:10 pm and it took your family another 20 minutes to change. Normally, our boat tour is complete by this time and we have a fresh, hot lunch delivered to the dock. With all the delays and confusion, the guide mistakenly tried to save time by skipping the meal but he never refused to provide the food. When you requested the lunch, our lunch kitchen was not able to deliver at such a late hour after our normal delivery window, but the guide was able to retrieve the food afterwards. Our records show the van left Bacalar at 4:50 pm and arrived back to the port by 6:15 pm. We take client safety very seriously. The distance from Bacalar to the port is 115 km, which means you had an average travel speed of 81 km to ensure that your family made it to port in time. I’m not sure how much time you have spent in Mexico, but due to narrow roads, other drivers here pull to the side of the shoulder to allow bigger vans to pass. It is not dangerous, it is just the courtesy provided by smaller cars. Again, with special permission, we were able to get your family as close to the ship as security protocols allow. Instead of the normal 15 or 20 minute walk, it is only a 5 min walk. The driver and guide are very grateful for your gratuity but we feel that the extreme delays from your family were a contributing factor in the stress. We wish that your family could have arrived earlier so that you could have relaxed and enjoyed our favourite lake in the Caribbean on “Mexican time”.

After a slight miscommunication on our meeting time, we had a wonderful excursion with Costa Maya Adventours! We were only in port from 7am - 1pm, so we didn't have much time to spend. But we received a full private tour and were back at our port with plenty of time left for souvenir shopping for the kids. Our tour was for the Chacchoben ruins and we received a lot of great information prior to and during the tour. We chose a private tour because we don't like to have a lot of people around, and when we arrived there were only about 5 people in the entire area. It was an all-around perfect day and we all had a blast!

We visited Costa Maya in 2019 with Royal Caribbean Cruises. We wanted to experience all, but because of time constrain we couldn't, of course we knew that but costa Maya adventours made it happen. They adjusted to our schedule, they picked up us from the port took us to a guided tour at Chacchoben and then took us to relax at Bacalar. It was a great experience a little bit of culture and a little bit of relaxation! Impressive pyramids and beautiful lake like you have never seen before... one spot crystal clear waters, different spot, deep blue see like waters... 7 different views! Our Tour guide JC was awesome as well, he was knowledgeable, experienced, funny and a great person. We recommend Costa Maya tour for your next adventure!

Went on a snorkeling trip with the Pirates while our cruise ship was docked in Costa Maya. Had a great time , they made it lots of fun
They are also very safety conscious and accommodate all groups , even those that have never snorkeled before . The catamaran is very comfortable and is very easy to get in and out of the water ,

We were on a cruise ship to Costa Maya. We really wanted to see the 7 color lagoon, and our cruise ship did not have a tour that we were able to get on. We found this tour and decided to give it a try! Well it was AMAZING! Carlos, was our tour guide. He picked us up at the cruise port and took us to Bacalar! He gave us a great tour along the way, and explained the history of the city. We first had some amazing tacos! Then he took us on a boat to visit the Lagoon! The Lagoon is absolutely breathtaking! We had an amazing boat tour, where Carlos did a great job of translating to us anything that was being said in Spanish. Then we got to spend some time in the waters of the lagoon. Unfortunately, our cruise was only docked until 2pm so we did not have as much time as we would have hoped, but Carlos was really good about keeping to our schedule and making sure we made it back in time. On the drive back, he even stopped and got us some authentic pineapple bread, which was amazing! We highly recommend this tour to anyone! It was the best tour of our cruise!

Ditch the pricey, overcrowded shore excursions offered by the cruise line, and contact Chris at Costa Maya Aventours.

We wanted a private tour experience and Chris offered a combination of the ruins at Chaccoben and a focused, boat-based exploration of Laguna Bacalar for $500 for 4 people. That's already less than what the cruise ship charges for the same tour on a giant bus, and a far-less in-depth exploration of Bacalar.

We were just a couple but figured we might meet some folks on board who would want to join us and split the cost. We ended up deciding to take the tour just for ourselves, and Chris did offer to lower the price by changing up some of the Bacalar portion. But we wanted the full experience, so we paid the full price for 4. It was WORTH IT. Our guides were Marco and Juan Carlos, both spoke excellent English, and were super kind and casual...treating us more like old friends than tourists.

Instead of pawning us off on a local guide at Chacchoben, Juan Carlos was our guide to the site, and they got us there BEFORE all the tour buses, so we had the entire site to ourselves for an hour! As we were walking back, LEGIONS of mega buses were disgorging thousands of tourists on the site, yet we'd had the place completely to ourselves! Worth the price, alone. They helped us get the local's price at the gift shop to get several maps, and some of the local chewing gum. (The Mayans invented chewing gum, and while it's now made with synthetic gums, the locals still make chewing gum from a native tree.)

Juan Carlos lives in Bacalar and knows everything about it, so we were treated to a truly local experience. Both him and Marco accompanied us on the private boat tour of the lake, showing us the big spots and some neat, out-of-the-way places. Bacalar is one of the most surreal and beautiful places I've seen in my life, 10 years of which was spent as a travel writer. While I'm sure it would be as stunning in a boat crammed with a zillion other tourists, I was thrilled to pay a bit more for a truly private, curated visit to Bacalar. (Plus, the guides brought along a cooler full of beer for us!)

After a few hours on the lake, we went ashore and were treated to a homemade meal from one of the local grandmothers who is highly respected in the community for her cooking skills. She made us chicken fajitas, guacamole, and a local Mayan specialty called "sikil pak." Think of it like a thick salsa made from pounded pumpkin seeds (pepitas), tomatoes, fresh habaneros, and cilantro. As a chef, I had experience with this dish before, and was SUPER excited to have it made locally. It was divine, we finished the whole plate, she refilled it twice, and she even dashed home to get me a bag of the pulverized pumpkin seeds and the fresh habanero chiles she used to make it!

Chris offers a range of tours, both private and small-group, at a variety of prices. So if your cruise includes a day at "Costa Maya" in Mahahual, absolutely contact him to schedule an authentic cultural experience. Get the heck out of that Disneyland they've created at the port, and connect with the wonderful, friendly locals, taste their food, see the natural and archaeological wonders, and become a better person because of it!

We truly appreciate your comments on this my friend. It was an honour to have a great Cheff like you try our local taste and actually like it. Personally I appreciate somebody who talks and enjoys mexican cuisine like you did, you have no idea how happy our cook Manuela was after finishing all the sikil pak :-) Thank you for visiting and we look forward to seeing you in the near future if you ever have the chance. Adios amigo :-)

We were on a cruise and last minute (night before arriving) we booked Segway tour and beach break. We had hear Costa Maya was not so great and wanted to fill the time. WRONG!!!! It’s beautiful and the tour was wonderful. Christian, Carlos and team were great. We started with a quick walk from the pier to their location and were greeted with chilled water and a quick but great safety briefing. After making sure we were all comfortable and practiced on the Segways we were off to the lighthouse. Beautiful views of the water and our ship. That is when Christian took the time to tell us about Costa Maya, the culture and the history. It was amazing to hear and he is very proud of his land. We were not just another days work and tour he wanted us to know about what they have went through from the old culture, the family bonds, to the hurricanes that devastated the area years ago. Then off to cruise the beach walk area and end on the beach. Chairs, kayaks, umbrellas, restrooms all included. If you were hungry or thirsty they had a bar and restaurant service you could order from. I would do it again and only with Christian and his team. Thank you for your stories, your professionalism, and opening up your person to us.
