There were six in our group and we arrived at 10 a.m. We had not made reservations in advance. Two of us had taken the tour 5+ years ago and rules have changed since then.

The Tecate beer garden gate employee offered to ask the office if there was a tour guide available that spoke English. He returned very quickly to let us know that there was a tour guide available. Our tour guide, Andres, came out to greet us. He spoke English very well.

Two of us had sandles on, however, we had a change of shoes in our car. No problem, two of us would change shoes - CHECK. Our cameras would fit in my shoulder back - CHECK. Our watches and jewelery can go in our pockets - CHECK.
Four of us could not slide our wedding rings off our fingers (2 married 50+ years and 2 married nearly 25 years) - OH GEEZ.
Two of six in our group proceeded to take the Tecate Brewery tour.

PROS
* Tour is 30-40 minutes long
* Tours offered in English or in Spanish
* One free Tecate beer per person per day in the beer garden
* Clean bathroom facilities
* The two that attended the tour received free red plastic sports bottle with the Tecate logo
* Tour is worth taking and it is interesting. Learn about the Tecate Brewery founded in 1943 and the variety of beer labels produced

CONS
* No beer for sale in Tecate beer garden (for those of us that weren't able to take the Tecate Brewery tour).
* Few guest parking spaces located directly in front of beer garden and the curb is painted yellow, which made me wonder if it was guest parking or not. We didn't want to park on the street if we didn't have to.

I wanted to write a review about visiting the Tecate Brewery, because it was difficult for me to find information online ahead of time. I visited this past Saturday and enjoyed the short trip from San Diego. Tecate is about an hour from downtown San Diego, just off the 94. If you've never been, you will likely be pleasantly surprised about how different this border town is from Tijuana.

I made a reservation for a tour at the brewery a couple of days in advance by calling 011-52-6659490. The guy who answered spoke English (after I kindly asked in my broken Spanish) and was easily able to set up a reservation for my group of 4 for a noon tour. I would recommend calling ahead of time, because several times I've wanted to visit and they've been closed for one reason or another. I believe the brewery is typically open from 10am-2pm on Saturdays with a couple of tours during that time. My email to the address listed on this site bounced back.

We parked for $5 on the U.S. side of the border and walked to the brewery (which is only about 10 blocks away). When we arrived, each of us received a ticket for one free beer in the beer garden. There were a lot of locals at the beer garden, which made me wonder if they go everyday for a free beer. :)

The free tour lasted about an hour and included a lot of history about the brewery, as well as some basic information about the town and beer making process. Our tour was about 25 people, with only a few other gringos. However, most of the tour was given in English, since I had requested it when I made our reservation (which is another reason to call ahead of time).

After the tour we headed to Taqueria Los Amigos for lunch for some tacos. Check it out, it's only about 5 blocks from the brewery.

All in all it was a fun trip to Tecate and couldn't have been easier getting in and out of the country and getting around on foot, while we were there.

My wife and I decided to make the short trip into Tecate to visit the brewery. Easy border crossing, short walk to the brewery, friendly service there and a free beer. Walked to the town square and enjoyed some great food. Wanted to love it and come back with friends. As we left to walk around Tecate, we noticed two men we had seen leaving behind us. It became obvious that they were following us. We crossed the street, they followed. We turned back to the square, they followed. We noticed a couple of police officers and stopped to talk with them. At that point the men moved on. We used to love visiting the border towns until it became too dangerous back in about 2000. Would love to start going back, but I don't think it's there yet. Hopefully soon. If you go, do what you should always do...be careful, be smart, be polite, and be aware.

Tecate is a great alternative for those too afraid to visit Tijuana, and is an easy, scenic 45 minute drive east from San Diego on Highway 94. Once you arrive on the U.S. side of the border, there are numerous public parking lots where you can park your car for less than 10 bucks, then walk across the border into Mexico. Make sure you have your passport with you, as you'll need it when you return back into the U.S. Once across the border walk straight to the most beautiful and quaint plaza where you can sit under the shade of a cool tree and enjoy a cold beer or frozen fruit Popsicle on a stick from one of the many vendors nearby. My favorite restaurant is Pollo Feliz where two people can fill up on roast chicken, fresh tortillas, cactus salad, beans, rice, chips and salsa for around 10 dollars for two. On your way back to the border stop by Calimax for an inexpensive bottle of liquor, sweet breads from the in store bakery, or your choice of Mexican foods to take back home with you. You will not regret your visit, and it is as safe and clean as anyplace back home in the U.S.

We tried to visit in February 2018 - it's very closed at the moment, as there are hundreds of workmen here making over the building following its purchase by Heineken. I'll come back next time we're in the area, but it doesn't look like it will be done for quite some time.

As everyone else has said, you go in, you get a free beer. I understand that if you are staying in town you can do this daily! A free beer every day, how cool is that? You don't even need to take the tour. It is good for adults, not so much fun for kids.

The outside patio has a roof to keep the sun off your head (which is good because Tecate can get very hot) and has a nice relaxed atmosphere although it does get busy and you may have to wait for a table to become vacant. There are snack machines on the patio area.

Definitely worth a little look and won't take up that much of your time. I believe you can take the tour in less than an hour, so it's perfect if you have a few minutes to while away.

The Tecate brewery is a great diversion. I have toured the brewery several times and always find that it is amazingly clean, well organized and efficient. The free beer in the "beer garden" is always a must do when in Tecate.

Tecate is a great place to visit and the Brewery get's a thumbs up. Something not mentioned is how easy it is to reach the US side of the border via public transportation. With a $2 compass card and a maximum $5.00 a day you can ride all the buses and light rail trolley all day long. This includes the 894 bus from the El Cajon Trolley Station the Tecate Border Crossing (about 300 shy to be precise). It shows up 8 times a day from 6:15 am to 6:55 pm. Miss the last bus though and you are stuck for the night or plan on spending $75 for uber.

Note: The wheelchair friendly designation is for the public transit.
