We were in Nova Scotia for a week and although going on a lobster boat tour wasn't on my itinerary prior to the trip, it's something I began looking into once I arrived. There seemed to be only a few lobster tour operators throughout the province. The other tours seemed to have more reviews on Tripadvisor and more photos attached. This one only had one review, so I was leaning more toward the other ones.
However, on the 3rd day of our trip, my mom got really sea-sick on a whale-watching tour, so she was nervous to go on another boat tour. As a result, we kind of dropped the idea of doing this. It was only on the second last day of our trip that we revisited the idea when we were looking for things to do in Cape Breton the next day (our last day). I had two options in Cape Breton, either in Port Hood or in Baddeck. I am so glad that we went with this option even though earlier in the week, I was thinking of going with the other tour.
When I called Captain Brian, I found out that this was a private charter, so the schedule was more flexible. With other tour companies, they operate at a specific time and all customers who are interested go on the tour together. Not only was the scheduling better, but the price was better too! Without other guests on board, this meant that if my mom got sea-sick again, we could end the tour short and head back.
Brian and our other guide, Alec, were both great! They were very friendly and informative. I found out that despite the impression this Tripadvisor page gives, Brian has actually been operating this tour for 23 years and was the first on the province to do so. I was surprised to hear that they actually do 2-3 tours a day.
This is a very interactive tour but without the pressure; you participate according to your comfort level, which means that it's also perfectly fine not to participate. Brian encouraged me to drive and steer the boat. Alec let me throw the lobsters and the traps back in the water. They explained how the traps work, taught us how to differentiate between male and female lobsters, showed us how to band claws, and explained how to measure the lobsters for keeping. Alec had no problem repeating and demonstrating everything again when my mom decided she wanted to record the information on video.
They also spotted eagles and hawks and tried to throw fish as bait, so that the eagle would swoop down to grab it. The total duration was about 1.5 hr. Considering my mom was not very enthusiastic about doing this tour initially, she actually was very pleasantly surprised by the experience and said that she would recommend it to her siblings. And she didn't get sea-sick!
This was a great experience, and it was such a nice change to do an activity instead of just scenic things like the beach or hiking. Go to their website if you want to some pictures.

Of our whole trip to the East Coast of Canada, to ms, this stands out.
Captain Bryan is passionate about what he does and about sharing it with the world and it was a real treat to spend a few hours with him on his boat. We loved the wealth of knowledge he offers but also the real hands-on experience that it was.
Recommending it to everyone headed to Cape Breton.

We booked the trip to catch some mackerel. The lake was rougher, so they got the big boat ready for us. We fished hard until we caught some fish. It was a beautiful day on the water even though the fish weren't in the mood to bite!! We caught 3 mackerel, saw seals, the Alexander Bell estate, and the many other boats from the water. The Captain and his crew also pulled a lobster trap with an orange lobster for us to see. Captain Brian had most of the time off since he taught my son and daughter how to drive the boat!!! They loved it. A super experience!

I first want to talk about customer service. We called Captain Brian in the morning. He tried calling back but I failed to give our room number. He came over to the hotel and personally found us. We met down at the docks 10 min later. He encouraged our oldest daughter to steer the lobster boat. We went out and pulled up four pots. The first three had lobsters in them to demonstrate how it was done. Along the way we saw eagles and seals! At the fourth pot, we found a 4 1/2 pound lobster. Unfortunately it was not a catch and eat type of trip. We got to work the pots, remove the lobsters, and throw them back. Brian and Alec were full of knowledge and stories about fishing for lobsters. If you can do only o e thing, I strongly recommend this trip!!! We have many wonderful memories from it!!

Captain Brian and Alex were so friendly and accommodating. They show you great sites including eagles, seals, Kidston lighthouse and more! This is a must do if you are in or near Baddeck!

Had a great time on this tour! It was a nice addition to our tour of the cabot trail, after hiking and doing land activities. I was looking for an excursion that would not take up an entire day, but that would somehow allow us to take in the Bras d'Or and learn some history in regard to the lobstermen in Nova Scotia. It was a fantastic time and exactly what I was looking for. Bryan and Alec are very personable and insightful. I learned a lot and in the end I felt satisfied to have been able to add a rich experience with some genuine locals.
The tour is personal, so if you book an excursion, you book for your party alone and no one else will be on the boat with you, so you get one-on-one attention. The tour is interactive, so you can hook up lobster traps and man the boat if you want. Bryan and Alec gave into all my whims, taking pics, and answering all our questions. You can get up close to the lighthouse and it is possible to see eagles and seals en route. The Bras d'Or is just so beautiful and really relatively unspoiled. It is large and rife with life and you really get that sense. I hardly saw any "yachts" hanging out, but such a place has the potential to be a millionaires's playground - Almost felt you stumbled on a yet to be discovered body of water/part of the world. Really enjoyed it! And I would recommend this tour for any age.
So come learn a little about the surrounding area and the industry that made that lobster sitting on your plate for dinner that night possible, while enjoying it's beauty. You will appreciate it so much more!

This was one of the highlights of our trip! Bryan and Alec were so fun, welcoming, and knowledgeable. We got to feed some eagles in the area, haul up the lobster traps and examine the catch. Great value and am definitely planning on doing another trip (fishing perhaps?) when we come back to Baddeck.

My wife and I had an awesome experience with Captain Brian and Alec! Seen bald eagles swoop down and catch fish, hauled in lobster traps, learned lots from both Brian and Alec! Knowledgable guys with lots of fishing experience. One of the highlights of our trip.
