The very best on the Great Bear Rainforest. Bears, whales, eagles galore. Great Chef and food! Three meals each day with yummy snacks in between. Walking on intertidal waters and discovering lots. Had 2 Phd crew members, so learned so much about what’s in the ocean and what’s on the land. So many types of plants and birds identified. Salmon runs happening. Visiting an Indigenous village, wonderful. Oh did I mention the food? Our Chef Erin was fabulous!! So many different foods and all so very well presented and tasty!! Loved the whole experience!! 💜

The Passing Cloud is aimed at the open-ended horizon when our plans change after spotting a group of what we thought were about ten whales off in the distance. As we arrive in the area, our heads and cameras are on a constant swivel. A half-dozen blows here, a trio of flukes there, a breach or two off in the distance. For more than 90 minutes we revel in our front-row seats as 30+ humpback whales circle the boat and put on an incredible display of oceanic ballet! ~~ Day 6 starts out with the threat of a storm passing through the area in the afternoon. High wind and heavy rain are in the forecast as we prepare ourselves for a day under the shelter of a bear-blind. After transferring to shore, we move our way through the uneven forest floor, covering about a mile over a well-worn but narrow path. Though our expectations are tempered, our hopes are high, as this will be our best chance to see the Spirit bear during the nine-day trip. There’s an estimated 100 of these Spirit bears on this particular island, although only 14 have ever been identified. Descending a slick wooden staircase down to the river’s edge, we spot a black bear a few yards ahead, hunting for salmon in the river. Our excitement ticks upward. “There’s a Spirit bear off to the right,” the guide whispers with excitement, a few more steps down the stairs. Our excitement explodes! Sure enough, just up the river, a Spirit bear, its face and front paws red with salmon blood is looking our way. Reaching the base of the stairs, everyone hurriedly jockeys for the best position to set up tripods and cameras. Behind the Spirit bear is another black bear hunting for its share of the high-fat fish. With shutters on rapid-fire, we capture numerous images of this rare sighting. ~~ Though we saw far more than what's listed below during our nine days at sea, the approximate animal count is: 60+ Humpback whales 40+ Bald eagles 15 Black bears/cubs 10 Grizzly bears 9 Orcas 1 Fin whale 1 Spirit bear The above are excerpts from a personal blog I wrote regarding the Oct 1-9th Photo Tour with James Thompson, onboard the Passing Cloud. A standing ovation must go out to the crew: Capt. Jackie, 1st Mate Liam, Chef Erin, Photo Leader James, and Marketing guru Oriana. WELL DONE! In communication with Oriana prior to booking and after we signed up, we became aware the chance of seeing humpback whales was a possibility, but being late in the season it was unlikely. We also knew the likelihood of seeing the Spirit bear was also a possibility, but not likely. Our dreams were not only met but exceeded. Sign up early, but do sign up for what is truly a great experience. Oh, I almost forgot to add, we saw nearly two dozen episodes of bubble-net feeding, another rarity in nature.

Hello Andy! Wow, what an incredible adventure we had together. I am so very thankful to have shared these wonderful moments with you aboard the Passing Cloud! Thank you so much for documenting these wonderful memories so beautifully. The abundance of wildlife was on full display for our entire expedition. I seem to recall someone saying " No, TODAY, is actually the best day!" and then was said each succeeding day as new and incredible experiences would arise every day. It is true, nature is nature and you never know what you will see, but we really had a wildly wonderful taste of it all from repeat bubble-net feeding humpbacks and the "oceanic ballet" to nine bears (including a Spirit bear!) in a single frame, running grizzlies, and orca calves too! Thank you for joining us on this fantastic adventure. We hope to welcome you and Mary aboard again in the future! Sincerely, Oriana

This was a most wonderful experience. The crew were friendly, expert and sympathetic, the food was delicious and plentiful, our on-board naturalist a whale magnet. Every detail had been carefully thought through down to a memory stick with all the photos you could want to remember everything. We cannot recommend Russ and his beautiful ship highly enough.

My husband and I had the best experience with Outer Shores Expeditions. Every detail and part of our expedition was mindfully coordinated and organized so we had a very fun, interesting, unique, and memorable expedition. We were thoroughly impressed with everyone's professionalism, expertise, warmth, and passion for sharing. Thank you to Oriana for answering all our questions in detail and promptly, and for keeping us well organized. Thank you Diana for the exquisite, nurturing, creative, first-class, super yummy foods and treats you made for us. We felt sooo amazing while eating your fresh and very tasty creations! Thank you Graham for teaching us and sharing with us your knowledge, sense of humour, humility, as well as your passion for Haida culture, history, respect, and love for the sea and its amazing creatures and plants. Your curiosity, zest for knowledge, and kindness were contagious. Thank you Courtney for sharing with us your knowledge of the area, the sea, sailing, and birds and animals (especially sea lions). Who would have thought that maps could be fun! Your knowledge and passion are remarkable. Passing Cloud was well-kept and in great hands with you! Thank you to Russ for the most wonderful, educational experience on Gwaii Haanas! Your knowledge on the biology of the flora and the fauna were impressive. And we are also thankful for the respect you have towards the Haida people and their culture, and the places we visited, as well as making sure we saw and visited all that we requested on our "must see/do" list with respect and kindness. Above all we would like to thank you Russ for putting together such a unique expedition for us to experience. Can't wait for what our next expedition with you and your Team will be...

I want to say a "trip of a lifetime" except that I hope we return for more! The Passing Cloud is a beautiful and comfortable ship. Captain Russ and his terrific crew made this trip exceptional. Interesting, informative and fun excursions, delicious food, and Russ, naturalist Vivian, and crewperson Mikasa were so knowledgeable re flora and fauna of the area. This really added to the richness of the experience. Chef Courtney never ceased to amaze, All from a tiny galley kitchen. Eric was always ready to lend a hand, often times literally as we got off and on the zodiac! All were so kind and patient, including Oriana who was there before, during and after our voyage. Everything was perfect. I wouldn't change a thing!! Thank you Russ, Oriana, Vivian, Mikasa, Courtney and Eric!
