To travel around Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve by boat is to enter a majestic and magnificent world of ocean, forest, bright stars and ancient Haida villages. Coming from Toronto, my seven-day adventure on the Piraeus sailboat offered a contrasting taste of a peaceful existence on water, moving around to various anchorages and discovering unspoiled places inaccessible by road. Viewing the remains of centuries-old carved poles and longhouses at the village of SGang Gaay was a highlight of the journey, as I could strongly sense the energy and spirits of the past. We also took some hikes through old-growth forest, bathed in pools fed by natural hot springs and kayaked in sheltered waters full of sea life, including jellyfish and sea urchins. In the open ocean, we spotted some orcas and grey whales. Weather in late July held a bit of everything from sunny, calm days to rain storms and rough seas, as well as some windy times when the sails went up and the engine went off. The most delicious meals were those with freshly caught salmon, lingcod and crab! The Piraeus holds up to 6 guests, plus captain and cook, and it could be close quarters if it's full. It’s fun to travel with people you’ve not met before and make new friends, but you could put together your own group of family of friends. An amazing opportunity to see a remote and fascinating part of Canada on a boat with a lot of character! Thank you, Captain.

We wanted to see Gwaii Haanas National Park. However only real way is via an outfitter [such as the Piraeus]. We elected to try the 7 day cruise on the Piraeus. We were fortunate that there had been a cancellation, and that we were able to get a booking that better fit our schedule. I was originally somewhat concerned about the food that we would get. Would it be 'cold cuts' for lunch and 'hamburger helper' for dinner. We were more than pleasantly surpised. Breakfasts included Scrabled Eggs & bacon, Pancakes, French Toast. Lunches incuded pasta, fresh wraps, For diner we had local salmon, spagetti and Roast Beef on the last night. The cruise included all the Haida Watchmen sites. We also got a chance to explore some of the quiet tidal areas. I even had a chane to 'take the helm'. On the one day we even got under full sail for a few hours. Please note however that quarters are tight on the boat. The double berth for my wife and I was more like a single "twin'.
