About
A first of it’s kind in Penang, the school is custom-made with individual purpose-built workstations that allows for a memorable hands-on cooking experience. As classes are limited to 10 persons, chefs are able to provide a personalised approach. Though the menus follow authentic and traditional methods they are taught in such a way that you are able to recreate the delicious dishes at home.

Tropical Spice Garden Cooking School in Penang is a must-do for any foodie visiting the area! My recent class with Chef Tarina was an absolute delight. Her infectious enthusiasm and clear instructions made the experience fun and engaging for cooks of all experience levels. She encourages students to ask questions to gain the insights they need to reproduce the menu at home.
Chef Tarina goes beyond just teaching recipes. She weaves personal stories and cultural knowledge into her lessons, creating a journey into the heart of Penang and Nyonya cuisine. The class wasn't just about following steps but understanding the flavors and techniques that make cooking food enjoyable.

Our cooking instructor, Faten, was amazing! She gave individual attention to all of us, made the class fun and was totally engaged with us. There were eight of us all ages and Faten made everyone feel comfortable. I have been to several other cooking schools in my travels and this is by far the best!

My wife and I like to do things like a cooking schools to learn about different combinations of flavours and foods, we did this one for the same reason....but didn’t really get much from it.
The staff were great but it was a very transactional experience where we just kept throwing the next pre-prepared ingredient into the pan. There was nothing in the way of ‘education’ about the spices and the whole experience was less than inspiring. The meal we cooked was also quite bland and lacked any real impact either visually or in regards to taste.
You may have a better experience but we have done much better cooking schools elsewhere.

We booked in an afternoon class on a Sunday and were lucky enough to enjoy a garden tour with only one other person - the guide was fantastic, very informative and moved at a good pace for our liking - didn’t drag anything out too long. Our cooking class which followed was only us and the guest cook Faten. Absolutely loved the whole experience & ready to cook the recipes again!! 😍

The Spice Garden and its affiliated cooking school was a one of a kind experience! First we spent 1 hour hour roaming through the spice gardens and understanding all of the different herbs, plants, and spices that make SE Asian food wonderful. Then we had a wonderful instructor Bea teach us how to make Assam laksa from scratch. Bea was great at guiding us and answering our questions. She was also wonderful to our kids (ages 4, 1) who accompanied us to the class. Highly recommend to anyone stopping by food paradise, aka Penang!

I attended the cooking school with my two daughters and we had a brilliant morning. After a warm welcome we were given a tour of the garden by a very knowledgeable and interesting guide. Upon entering the cooking school, we put on the special aprons (which we were allowed to keep) and spent the morning cooking a Malay salad, Prawn curry and banana fritters. Huge fun and highly delicious! Our teacher was excellent and took us through the dishes with lots of enthusiasm and patience, we had recipe sheets that we could keep enabling us to recreate the feast at home. At the end of the cooking we were led to an area where we ate what we had cooked, washed it down with nutmeg juice, then we visited the shop to buy some of the spices that we had used when cooking. Can thoroughly recommend this activity!

After an interesting tour through the spice garden our group of women did a cooking class. It was lots of fun and we had a good time and enjoyed our delicious meal outside afterwards.

Started with spice garden tour - this was fantastic and was well worth it. Our guide was so knowledgable and was very friendly. We had a brief encounter with a visitor to the garden who showed us photos of local birds and monkeys and the most amazing water monitor coming out of the water with a catfish in its mouth. We then did the cooking clas with Bee and her 2 assistants. WOW - Bee was an amazing teacher and we cooked the most delicious meal and ate it at the patio area with the most beautiful view!! Bee knew her stuff - how to maximise flavour with spices and 'see' the food. She obviously loves her job and food. I would highly recommend her to others.

We had an interesting tour of the spice garden from Danny who is quite cheeky but knowledgeable and fun.
The cooking class was great and the recipe was easy to follow and the food was very tasty. We did the Nonya class with Chicken curry and it was great.
The teacher Rohanna was very helpful.
Thoroughly recommend,

Hi, is it best to book with TSG direct online? Or through a 3rd party e.g. expedia etc..
Thanks
Vicki

i booked direct. It's a small operation; can't imagine there are any advantages to booking through a third party.

Do you provide hotel pick up for the cooking class?
Written June 30, 2018
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for writing in! Sorry, but we don't. We'd recommend either taking the RapidPenang bus or to book a Grab - they're cheap and convenient.
Looking forward to your visit!

My friend and I have booked a class. Can our husbands come later to help us eat our efforts or not? Would they have to pay?

Hi Susan,
You and your friend's husbands can come join for lunch at a price of RM53 per person. The cooking portion is meant for 1 person only and should there be another dining guest joining, we will increase the portion to 2 person and you will cook your husband's portion during class.
