- BelfastAussie_9Belfast, United Kingdom127 contributionsA world of butterfliesI wish we’d scheduled more time for Entopia - we spent about 90 minutes there and could have stayed much longer. The living butterflies are definitely the highlight, but their huge array of preserved butterflies, bugs and beetles is beautiful and fascinating. There’s so much for kids to do, but it’s great fun for adults too. It’s amazing having huge butterflies land on you and just settle for a few moments. I’ll definitely go back if (when?) I visit Penang again.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 20, 2024
- Jacinta WLondon, United Kingdom352 contributionsGreat morning for familyLovely morning out. Arrived shortly after 10am, not too busy. 10.30am we got to release some butterflies. Walking through the areas are well maintained and loads of butterflies, insects and reptiles to see. Interesting Discovery Centre including a short presentation where we could handle stick insects, cockroaches etc. Worth the admission price, all of us including a 4 year old had a lovely few hours here.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 11, 2024
- WorknForVacationDenver, Colorado52 contributionsVery Good ExcursionThis is sort of like kids science museum meets botanical gardens. I was pretty satisfied with just the butterfly done but then realized there is so much more! Many different exhibits were to follow, each engaging and informative. I went with adults, but think this would be a big hit for families with kids from around 4-12 years old, but more appropriate for kids ages 7-12 probably.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 24, 2024
- KoalaBouySingapore, Singapore168 contributionsVery surprised placePretty wow for an animal attraction in Penang. This is probably the best “zoo” in penang. But, of course, this is an butterfly and insect museum. The way the museum presented with a lot of information was really thoughtful.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 23, 2024
- Brendan RBlue Mountains, Australia53 contributionsAn Asian experience for familiesAnother interesting Asian experience. Probably not the ideal time of year to visit. Heat and humidity quite oppressive at times. The contrast between the heritage areas and the steady modernization of the island creatures an air of excitement. The cultural mix makes for some very interesting tours of the many temples. The Spice Farm, Entopia and the Botanical Gardens are all very worthwhile sites to visit. The traffic is crazy and despite well organized roads nobody follows the road rules. Transport and dining are very cheap by comparison and the people are helpful and friendly. As a tourist centre, will only get better. Beware the Arrivals terminal at the airport - awful! Desperately needs total revamp and the online visitors record will drive you crazy.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 31, 2024

This is our third time here, prior to this the kids were toddlers and tweens. The place was previously just a butterfly farm. Alot of improvements after it was rebranded to Entopia. More insects and reptiles was on display with different types of “worlds” were made as part of the journey through the park.
They also had friendly staff, Remy was exceptionally cool & simply awesome! He was fun and gave out alot of interesting facts to my teens. He managed to keep my teens interested by letting them touch a scorpion and spider web. He even took the time to explain in detail on the other insects and reptiles that he thought would interest us.
The only set back is that, the place didn’t have anymore staff like Remy, the rest of the park left us with just simple facts on the information board to keep us interested.

Entopia is located on the west coast of Penang Island, at least a 30 to 40 minute drive from Georgetown, depending on traffic. The building is divided into two parts, the greenhouse where you can see butterflies and other animals (iguanas, monitor lizard, etc.) and the covered part where you can see reptiles and insects (stick insects, giant stick insects , woodlice, grasshoppers, etc.)
The covered part is itself broken down into several parts including scientific and legendary information concerning butterflies. Another part with the different phases of a butterfly's life, going from larva to butterfly. We learn more about the different egg shapes depending on the Lepidoptera family, the different camouflage and defense techniques and the butterflies' diet. Quite an adventure!
An area with butterflies and other stuffed insects displayed in display cases gives us an overview of the different insects found on the peninsula and Asia in general. A more fun area where children will find what they are looking for arrives at the end of the museum where there is the possibility of taking photos, participating in workshops, etc. A large store is also available.
Concerning the greenhouse, it is immense and you feel directly immersed in an equatorial forest, the nature and vegetation are so luxuriant. A more or less one-way path winds through the heart of it with different points where the butterflies are attracted so that they come as close as possible to us. We pass through a cave, we pass through a mini-greenhouse where butterflies frolic, etc. The greenhouse is not closed or airtight, in other words, if it rains, the butterflies will hide and you will not easily see them.
If it stops raining, in any case, you will be amazed by all these little creatures that come towards you, sometimes even landing on you.
There is ample free parking on site, the staff are very welcoming and very friendly. The day we went it was raining heavily and one of the staff made sure to find out if we really wanted to visit the place when it would be difficult to be able to see butterflies. She suggested we go take a look and advised us to start with the covered part before going into the greenhouse while waiting for the rain to stop.
So we started with the covered part and were lucky enough to see the rain stop as we were about to enter the greenhouse. It was really nice of them to see if we really wanted to visit because once paid, tickets are not refunded if it rains. Allow a minimum visit of 3 hours, knowing that in the event of bad weather, you will have to wait between two showers.
Some of the areas of the covered part deserve a little refreshment, but the whole remains really great.

This is a little out of the way on Penang Island, but easily reached by bus (end of the line on the bus route). The main enclosures are quite impressive and pretty. Plenty of butterflies and you can get up close to plenty (although I had maybe expected more variety/species). Some other animals to enjoy in the enclosure too like spiders and also lizards. The educational part was ok but aimed for children so not so much for me. Seeing the cocoons up close in there was quite impressive though. But I did note that some of the bugs they had in there were on artificial plastic ‘plants’ in there which I thought was very disappointing. The day I went there was no catering on the site and the chicken restaurant there looked like it had been closed some time, the coffee shop at the end also looked like it hadn’t been open for a while, there is not much else around there (at least 15 mins walk to a shop) in terms of getting drinks or food so make sure you take what you need.

The location of this park is near Batu Feringgi, far from the city centre of Georgetown. The park isn’t very big and you’ll be done within 1 hours or even less, so in that sense it isn’t worth making a special trip there, if you’re staying in the city centre area and If you’re not driving, you are not a part of the tour group or have a private charter driver who will be waiting for you - do not go especially if you’re with young kids or the elderly . I made a mistake of going and had difficulties getting a cab/ Grab back to the city centre from the park. There were so called “private drivers” (touts) waiting at the lobby - and they all charge a premium of RM$50-80 for a 1 way trip back to Georgetown. A driver claimed he was called upon to “standby” by the park personnel to pick up passengers!! I was traveling with my elderly mother so I had little choice but agree with the “premium” charge. Otherwise if I was traveling solo or with friends, I would have walked to the adventure park next door and take the Rapid Penang bus and then change to another bus back to Georgetown as advised by a park staff. That said the staff there were very nice and helpful.

Entopia is located in Teluk Bahang area. The sight of the building boasts modern-eco architecture. The establishment is not massive, but of just nice size. They do provide free parking on site but it's quite limited.
The admission ticket priced at MYR 49.00 to Malaysian adult with id card to be shown during the purchase. I didn't remember the ticket price for other categories.
You see wonder once you passed the entrance. Butterflies fly everywhere. The main area look like a massive glass dome. It basically hosts a few gardens with waterfall in the centre.
They exhibit reptiles and insects too. Towards the end of the exhibition, there is a souvenir shop. I love the butterfly frame!
It's a great place overall.

It is more for the kids. Overall there are varities of insects and butterflies to view. takes about 1-2 hours to slowly enjoy searching for the insects, lizards, snakes and small frogs. educational for kids. Howver, the price is rather steep and not worth the visit if you have better places to go in Penang which are more historical. Recommend to skip this if your stay is short about 2-3 days where there many more places that are free or cheaper with better insight knowledge of Penang.

Went with family, a good fun trip for the kids with an educational aspect to it. They really enjoyed it , and learned a lot about all the different animals. The butterfly outdoor section did look like it needed some maintenance, but besides that it was a good display and an easy walk around suitable for all ages. Some really good educational videos as well.
The downside for first time visitors will be the realization that international visitors to Penang will be charged more than locals for admission, but this is common place in Malaysia.
The gift shop at the exit was a negative experience unfortunately- We were looking at one of the displays but one of the shop staff wouldn’t leave us alone ,even though we politely informed her a couple of times that we were fine and didn’t need her help at the moment. I was going to buy a couple of gifts, but due to her insistent behavior we just left the shop without buying anything.

The place is very well organized, with a didactic and nice visit route. Butterflies circulate in large spaces (and therefore do not have damaged wings) and foraging most of the time on real flowers. Lots of reptiles and insects, also in very well appointed spaces. Very fun discovery rooms for the kids (and the adults) on insects. The staff are very attentive and are happy to inform you. Do not hesitate to manipulate a living scorpion!

Transportasi apa yg bisa saya gunakan kalau mau kesana?trus brp jam perjalanan bila dr sunway hotel, thx
Written September 27, 2018
Hai.

Hi I've read that except numerous butterflies, there are some fascinating lizards, insects and spiders. As much as my girlfriend is fascinated in butterflies, she also has strong arachnophobia so I was wondering if it is a good place to visit for her or is it better to keep away? How are the spiders displayed?
Written January 2, 2018
Each Spiders are in individual showcases, and you can hardly see them, unless you look hard.
Written January 2, 2018
Hi, is there any difference if I buy the tickets via online and walk-in? Please advise. Thank you.
Written December 18, 2017
Dear 124mos, if you log online, there might be discounts offered. Do try, sometimes you can get up to half price.
If you are local and 60 years of age, there is a senior citizen special which is less than the 50% discounts.
Have fun ok?
