I rated this course "excellent" when I first played it in 2017, and it has only gotten better. What a relief to see that other reviewers agree! (I hate it when I rate a course 5 stars, and I see that some disgruntled person has rated it one star) I have played many of the best courses (per Golf Digest) around the country, and I would say that Hawktree is not merely the best in North Dakota but among the best in the entire hemisphere. Yes, it can be difficult, but that is what you get when you build a golf course on this kind of real estate. I usually do not care too much about the manicure of the grass, or the quality of the sand in the traps, or even the friendliness of the staff, but in this case EVERYTHING was perfect. Note that the "sand" in the traps is some sort of perfect black crystals that are both dramatic and better than the real thing. And there is not a divot anywhere! Does nobody take divots in North Dakota? Does anyone even play golf in North Dakota?

I’ve had the opportunity to play Hawktree twice now and it lives up to its reputation as the #1 golf course in North Dakota. The design is unique and challenging, without feeling tricked out and gimmicky. The elevated tee boxes and greens present a formidable round of golf and the breathtaking taking beauty of the course will live you satisfied and content as you sip a beverage in the elegant clubhouse after your round.

This course is highly ranked by Golf Digest, which often means very little because they put way too much emphasis on course manicure, staff, and clubhouse food, and they care too little about the actual course layout and the shot making required. But in this case, GD got it right! I only played this course once, but I can remember dozens of the holes. It is simply fun! The greens are fast bentgrass and the sand in the well-groomed traps is like black salt crystals. This course could make a man consider moving to North Dakota. Well, maybe in the summer.

The course itself is very nice, but does need more signage. As for the staff and maintenance people, it was the worst service imaginable. They hadn't updated their web page and had old prices, which we were told included carts. Surprise, we were charged an extra $20 for carts! We ran into two issues on the course where we had inter-action with maintenance workers, and were treated rudely. One guy had his work cart parked right in front of the green on a par 3 and just kept watering the green. When we finished we brought it up to him and he rudely said it was the only place he had access to the water line. After our round we brought our concerns to the course pro and he couldn't have cared less. He backtracked when we brought up the price issue and said the web page must not have been current. No offer to make things right. Overpriced at $100 with cart fees. We canceled our afternoon replay and played a wonderful muni in town.

Played this course a couple of years ago, staff in the pro shop was terrible one was the managers son. I had booked to play 18 holes and reconfirmed my tee time a couple of days ahead and when I got there they had started aerating the front nine, but hadn't told me when I had booked, and when I said I would have played somewhere else, they told me that I should consider myself lucky to be playing one of the top rated courses in nation for $26.00 for nine holes. Won't ever go back

Played this course on a Monday afternoon on the heels of a charity tournament. The course was well maintained and no two holes are the same. From the tips this would be a challenge for anyone. Enjoyed the afternoon and would recommend it but the $103.00 green fee may be a little steep for the area.

We enjoyed playing here and it is very reminiscent of a links course in Scotland. We were, however, disappointed with the skimpy and confusing signage. It is too easy to take a wrong turn from a green to the next tee. Given the cost of playing here and the course's high quality, they could have much better signage and yardage markers.

I have heard a great deal about Hawktree but never had a chance to play it. I had my chance on a recent trip to Bismarck. It it an absolutely beautiful course. Well maintained and challenging. Great place to golf

A great place to golf--just as advertised but would be an exceptional challenge if it were windy--which apparently it is most often. We booked the triple-challenge: Links of North Dakota, Bully Pulpit and Hawktree and we were not disappointed. Would definitely return.
