I'm generally not one to visit churches, but my cousin insisted that we see this one. It is a gem. I have never seen a public building in such immaculate condition, Not a speck of dust or a flake of paint anywhere to be seen. Our guide was an informative and enthusiastic member of the church who encouraged us to look around and ask questions. The highlight of the tour are the ten large, and truly magnificent stained glass windows. The painting on the ecclesiastical windows is nearly perfect. What makes the windows spacial is the full plating technique that layers glass to allow additional detail, depth and shading. The technique creates an ethereal perspective that is both beautiful and inspiring. Don't miss it.

When my family and I relocated to North Carolina, we had to find new holiday traditions. For us, this involved finding a church that reminded us of our old home church and how deeply it moved us during the Christmas season.

Though we go to church a bit closer to home for the rest of the year, we happily make the trip to enjoy Christmas with Home Moravian Church. They always choose perfect songs; the classics are played and sung by a band, choir, and orchestra along with the congregation.

For us, music is a big part of what makes this church feel like home during Christmas. You can feel the spirit of Christmas 100% just by being in the building.
They distribute traditional Moravian rolls and coffee during the service. I’m not a coffee drinker, but I make an exception for their oddly satisfying brew.
The sermon is traditional but moving all at once. Yet another reason we love this church for Christmas service. I’m personally not a fan of churches that try to get all modern for major holidays…I prefer that they stick to just talking about the true meaning of Christmas and not trying to make it into some crazy lesson. But that’s just me.

Though we don’t regularly attend this church, unlike other churches we visited before finding this one, we are always welcomed with unjudging eyes or those irritating passive aggressive remarks about “I haven’t seen you here before” comments. The ushers and other regular church members are genuinely welcoming and just happy we are there for that service.

We were beyond excited to discover Home Moravian Church and look forward to attending their Christmas services for the foreseeable future.

Thank you Home Moravian Church for giving me the taste and feeling of home that I miss so much! You're a little slice of home for me :)

If you’ve visited and toured Old Salem and learned its unique history, you will especially enjoy seeing the interior of Home Moravian Church. It is open daily with docents to explain more about the worship and teachings of this earliest Protestant denomination. A special treat is attending one of the several Christmas Eve Love Feasts held at Home Moravian Church. Music, hot coffee and a Love Feast bun (a spiced potato roll) along with the story from Luke's Gospel are featured. Everyone also receives a lighted handmade beeswax candle to hold while singing “Silent Night” in the darkened church. A lovely way for families to remind their children of “the reason for the season.”

Old world meets the new. Peek into the past of one of the many undervalued immigrant communities in the US. That of the German protestant church.

If you are visiting Old Salem make sure you stop in at Home Moravian church. It is a beautiful
historic church and was the religious center for the Salem residents. They have events thru-out the year and if you can get there for a Love Feast Candle Tea in December it's an extra treat.

OK, I'm biased. This is the church I grew up in. It is also the church that my father and his family grew up in. It is beautiful! Walk in and sit down in a pew in the church . . . anywhere. Then look up or over and look at the beautiful stained glassed windows which were brought over to NC from Germany. Just relax and remember the Bible Stories behind the stained glass images. Reflect on how those stories impact your life. When you do, you will find peace and serenity.
If you have the opportunity to visit during the Christmas season, smell the scent of the forest as the evergreen boughs hang from the ceiling. Also, if you have the opportunity to partake in the Christmas Lovefeast, the smell of coffee and beeswax candles is intoxicating.
Upon leaving the church, turn and walk up the hill to God's Acre where Moravians have been buried in the tradition of "choirs" since the 1700s. Stop and reflect. Listen to the birds tweeting, watch the squirrels bounce from tree to tree. Know that each Easter, this peaceful setting reminds us all that "The Lord is Risen. He is Risen, Indeed". Both the church and God's Acre will take you away from the rush of today's world and truly let you reflect on the peace and tranquility that life has to offer.

We had the opportunity to listen to one of the church volunteers in "Home Moravian Church." It was open from 1-3 that day so make sure to check the times if that interests you. It was the highlight for us and it was free! The Moravians have such a rich history and the church is beautiful! Thank you to the kind man (church volunteer) that answered all of our questions!

We really enjoyed the service, a tradition started over two hundred years ago in Germany. The weather was cooler but manageable and the sunrise was matched by the church bands playing and people having a truly spiritual experience.
