- Kswales1 contributionAmazing experience for my daughter! My 15 year old daughter attended the marine biology camp in June 2023. She had the time of her life. When we picked her up she was crying because she did not want to come home. She made several friends that she is keeping in contact with, and they are making plans to return next year. She has always been interested in marine biology and this camp just reinforced her passion. I was nervous about sending her so far away for a week with people she didn’t know, but it was an amazing experience for her.Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 7, 2023
- Tanya-kSt. Albert, Canada11 contributionsI love marine biology! My 15yo daughter attended the Sea Turtle Camp in Hawaii in July 2023. She had an amazing experience. The enrichment and learning about marine biology, especially in Hawaii was the best ever! She made lifelong friends and became more passionate about conservation and marine biology. She says the camp leaders were friendly and supportive throughout the week. The food was great and the experience of staying in dorms at the University of Hawaii Manoa gave her a glimpse of what university could include. From a parents perspective, we flew down with our daughter due to having to cross the border with a minor. The camp gave very good instructions and even called to let us know what baggage claim to meet them at. Then they were off with their cohort. STC posts pictures every day on their Facebook page so it was great to follow along on their adventures. They also provided instructions for pick up at the university which was great. One item that they must continue is that the camp attendees are not allowed to have their cell phones, this gives our kids a chance to get away from their tech and social media pressures and forces them to interact and make friends. I highly recommend this camp to any teenager who has an interest in marine sciences.Visited July 2023Written July 18, 2023
- Ashley P1 contributionOnce in a life time! The trip was more than I could of ever hoped for. The adventure of being in another country alone could be amazing but the various locations and people we met along the way made it incredible. Volunteering with the turtles was truly a life affirming piece of my journey. I have wanted to be a marine biologist since I was very young and this trip created a larger desire to pursue this degree in college. I made friendships with people from all over the United States and hope we can stay in touch for years to come.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 26, 2023
- ChuckDallasDallas, Texas240 contributionsA great adventureMy son (age 16) attended Sea Turtle Camp Hawaii for a two week adventure in July 2023. I was wary of how it would go, since he had never been away for that length of time and without access to a cellular device. My concerns were misplaced. He had a wonderful time! I think the group was about 12 students and they seemed to coalesce as a term very quickly. The camp "leaders", Madeline, Molly, and Ryan were all excellent. Drop-off at Honolulu airport was seemless as was pickup two weeks later. Everyday the Camp posted pictures of that particular days' activities so it was obvious from the photos that everyone was having a grand time. There are many forms to complete but given the range of activities it was reasonable, just time consuming. That is my only minor whine. 100% recommendation.Visited July 2023Written August 9, 2023

Our 14 year old son has wanted to be a marine biologist. Sea Turtle Camp gave him the beginnings of this experience. He earned his open water certificate and looks forward to qualifying for his advanced open water certificate. The camp counselors were contentious and caring. With the pandemic I thought the arrangements provided everyone safety and protection. Sea Turtle Camp provided a wonderful summer experience, and I would recommend it without reservation.

Our 16 year old loved her experience at camp! She met new friends and said she only missed us a little:-). A wonderful opportunity to volunteer and a safe environment. Sleeping was lights out at 10 pm and up at 6 pm. Meals provided were good and they are on top of any food allergies.

Our daughter loved it! She arrived on her 14th birthday and all of the counselors sang happy birthday to her as she checked in. She got to care for and learn all about several different kinds of sea turtles. And she made many many friends. She definitely wants to return for camp next summer, possibly to do the SCUBA camp. Highly recommended.

Our 14 year old son was a part of the Marine Biology Immersion camp and spent 11 days being a part of a really educational and fun-filled experience. He got to learn a bit about scuba diving, volunteer at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, be a part of turtle walks and so much more. He's already talking about going next year. The entire staff was wonderful, informative and they uploaded pictures of all of their adventures each day. My son said that the food was good too and loved this camp so very much.

My daughter participated in the Marine Biology Immersion Session and it was fabulous. She is considering majoring in marine biology in college and this was a great way to test out her interest and see what would be involved in that career path. The campers had a very thorough experience at the Center, on the trawler, on the beaches learning about the sea turtles and what threatens them. Along with the service hours and all the educational parts of the 11 days, they also had a blast boogie boarding, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming and playing beach volleyball. There were just 13 students in her group so lots of opportunity to get to know each other and to interact with the turtles. She has attended a variety of camps over the years and she said this was the absolute best. As a parent I was very pleased and impressed with how well it was run, and loved the many great photos they post on their Facebook site so you can see what your child has been doing each day.

My son was disappointed in the experience. He was really looking forward to experiencing some Marine Biology fun as that is what he is looking to go to college for. However he said that they didn’t do much of anything but spend time swimming at the beach. They only went to the Sea turtle hospital and aquarium and that was the most Marine Biology that they got. He was highly disappointed and does not want to return. He is 13 and it was his first camp experience.

This was such an amazing experience for my son (17). He wants to study marine biology and he this was the perfect for camp for him. The activities were great, and the staff pivoted well during the rainy days, with fun activities. I highly recommend this camp!

My daughter wants to participate in 2 camp sessions, the open water scuba and marine biology adventure camp. Are there camps that combine these and if not, there are days between camps, can they stay at the lodging in between camps or do they have to move out and come back to camp.

Hello! Thanks for reaching out about Sea Turtle Camp. If she wants to do scuba and participate in marine science activities, I would suggest the 11-day scuba program. In this program they receive their certification and also have time to do activities and see some sea turtles! She could also do MBA and a scuba session back-to-back, but will have to pay a little extra for what we call intersession. Or she could leave and come back the next week!

Is this camp really best suited for kids who already have passion for marine biology or would it be fun for a 12-14 yr old who is just looking for new experiences

Hello......there were some in my camp who have a passion to have a career in marine biology, and there were others who just love sea turtles and the beach.......we all just had a great time together.

Is this only a camp or can you come for 1 day and see turtles?

It is only a camp. You can choose to go for a week or 2 weeks. Or you can go to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in North Carolina and do a walk through tour and see the turtles.
I was just wondering if phones are allowed because I've registered for camp this summer and im super super excited but also really nervous and scared of not being in contact with my friends and family from home.

During my camp time we were not allowed to have our phones. On the first day of camp they took them up, the last night they gave them back to the peoples whose phones had been collected (not left with parents). That honestly depends on the counselor. You will be so busy most of the time you won't even think about it!! I brought a iPod (that couldn't connect to wifi) and listened to music on that at nights. One thing that I wish I did differently was bringing more socks and another pair of closed toed shoes. They get sand in them! Overall you will just forget about everything around you, embrace everything! They can check out the Facebook pictures posted nightly!!!

My daughter and I just can't decide between the 1 week program and the 11 day immersion. She is 15 and has never been away from home. Any feedback would be helpful.

I will also be attending college this fall with some of the same people I went to camp a few years ago with and I can't wait to see them! We are all going to study marine biology and sea turtles.
