Over the years, they have continuously improved the waterfront area to the point that it is now a nice tourist destination. Many upscale restaurants are right on the waterfront, and there are many other sights to enjoy. Parking is an issue especially on weekends, but they have also added more spaces as the downtown area continues to grow in popularity. Best bet is to enter one of the pay lots to avoid driving in circles for a metered space.

This is the jewel of Wilmington. Still under construction when we visited in June 2022
- but will be a delightful stroll along the Cape Fear River once it is complete. The part we walked was great - past the marina, condos, places to sit and watch the sunset and of course a few great restaurants to sit and take in the view.

A Summer Time or ANY time treat. I am in Wilmington several times a year. While it IS BUSIER in the summer, I love it all year. During the slow months there is always the Black Cat Magic Shop, George’s and the Art Gallery near Chandlers Wharf. Wilmington itself is a great city! Take a Carriage Ride go on aGhost Walk. Lots pf history and Antebellum Hones and Tours.

This area is good if you live or work in the area but it’s nothing special for tourists. It’s a path along a river with a lot of construction and not much to see or do. There are some restaurants and shops a street or two before the walk but not worth a day trip.

This place is very pleasant to walk around with restaurants on 1 side and the river on the other. There were quite a few restaurants. There were also boat rides available to enjoy the river. I like to walk around so I was quite happy to explore the shops looking for different things. The integrity of some of the buildings was intact the inside having been made into small stores. About half way down the front there is quite a bit of construction which did not go too well with the ambiance. I am sure when it is finished it will be a most enjoyable place.

Check out the River Walk in the Historic District of Wilmington. Some sidewalk and some boardwalk all along the Cape Fear River provide pretty views and awesome sunsets. Parts are still under construction but there is plenty completed to enjoy. Several restaurants along the way offer indoor and outdoor seating.

I love the Riverwalk! I have been several times. I love the downtown area of Wilmington. There are plenty of shopping opportunities and everyone is really friendly. The Riverwalk is perfect for opportunities for pictures and a nice evening walk. OTH fans - you will be able to find the Naley bench/bracelet scene very easily due to the quotes people have left behind. Grab some ice cream from Kilwan's and make the stroll. This is a small town and it's not very crowded which is actually kind of nice but if you are looking for something really touristy, this isn't it. You have plenty of eating/drinking options along the Riverwalk. We did have to wait about 50mins for a table at Front Street Brewery and this was on a Tuesday, but it is the summer months so that probably increased tourists and vacationers. I have also went during the week in May and the crowds were significantly less.

We enjoyed our walk on the riverfront, but it was crowded in the late afternoon (before the dinner crowd arrived). We grabbed ice cream and watched a wedding (pretty neat to get married by the water, but the group was totally in the sun). I expected more shopping opportunities, but a lot was closed on Saturday.

The river walk is gorgeous when it isn’t covered in construction cones and barriers. There is no view at this point and the sidewalk is narrow. I am sure the additions will be well worth it once the project is complete but for now it’s just another way to walk to get where you are going. Don’t except a gorgeous view.

We visited Wilmington for the first time in November and returned in early April. On both visits we enjoyed strolling along the Riverwalk from our hotel to the historic downtown and back. The length is about 2 miles and affords an interesting look at the river and downtown. There are frequent benches for those with limited mobility to stop and rest.

Yes. This is the most dog-friendly city I’ve ever been in. Very strict about cleaning up after the pooch but have “stations” along the walk and various areas throughout downtown that provide “doggie bags”, if you get my meaning.

What restaurants are recommended along the boardwalk for outdoor dining during sunset?

The Pilot House and The George are both good choices depending on what type of food you are looking for too. Elijah's is another great choice for dinner on the river. If you are looking for dinner on the ocean at Wrightsville we are always happy with Oceanic. We also love South Beach Grill at Wrightsville Beach. If you sit on the patio you may be able to catch the sunset there too. There are many great restaurants on the river walk though. For a night cap on the river walk hit the Front Street Brewery. A lot of the restaurants on Front Street do not Front the river. So you may be able to enjoy the sunset on the river walk and then dine at one of the many restaurants on Front Street. Good luck! Wilmington is one of our favorite small beach towns!!

What are a few nice hotels downtown along the Riverwalk that won't cost an arm and a leg? Is there a Marriott or a Hyatt? We are planning to visit Wilmington the weekend on August 18th. - AG

The Riverwalk is appx. one mile long. It has benches and areas you can eat at.. Lots of Restaurants available. Nice scenic walkway where you decide your pace.
Does the Riverwalk officially begin at Nun Street or will further construction be completed toward Cape Fear Memorial Bridge? I'm curious as there's a much better area for parking and easy access to the Riverwalk (especially for seniors) by the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. Seems like a far better start/end than Nun Street. In fact, the Riverwalk was breath taking but the access was a pain since I came into the area specifically to visit the Riverwalk. If there was an added access point by the memorial bridge, I'd be back for sure. Considering the nightmare in parking and navigating the street to access, it's just not for me, no matter how incredible the view.

As the area beyond Chandler's Wharf is privately owned property, I don't believe that further construction toward the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge will be happening. There are several pay parking lots on Water Street (across from The George Restaurant and adjacent to Chandler's Wharf), as well as the parking deck on Water Street adjacent to The Cotton Exchange/Hilton hotel, which allow easy parking and access to the Riverwalk.
