Curtis Wright Falconry

We had a terrific day with CW Falconry. The Fall weather was perfect and we were fortunate to be the only two on that day’s outing. Our guide was Pete Kipp, one of a very small number of master falconers in the US. He’s definitely doing what he was born to do.

He’s incredibly knowledgeable about the history of falconry and the birds used here in the US and around the world. We learned a lot about the equipment used in the art of falconry and also about how the birds are raised and trained. As it turns out the terms “I’ll be there with bells on” and “under my thumb” have their origins in falconry.

Our birds were a Harris hawk (Sweetie Boy) and a red tail Hawk (Rufus). Sweetie is more experienced and we worked with him first. He is a powerful 1.5 lb bird – so smart and spirited. We learned quite quickly how to hold the birds properly on the protective glove. The birds are pros so they manage very well despite your inexperience. After you learn how to correctly position your hands so the birds can land, you walk around with them a bit and then it’s time to let the birds loose and learn to call them.

Pete coaches very well and he knows his bird’s behaviors. Sweetie likes to do “fly bys” if you don’t feed him as fast as he’d like. (It’s quite like the Top Gun pilots buzzing the tower). He’s quite a character. You are given a little beef to hold in your glove, you call him, hold your arm out and he’s on the way. It’s amazing to see a hawk flying right to you and the slow-mo video Pete takes for you as the bird lands and claims his beef prize are amazing. We had lots of time to practice calling Sweetie and we also learned how to cast the bird as well. When the beef is gone (the birds are weighed prior to working and they come to work “hungry” and get a certain amount of food during their work), then they receive their real prize…a mouse (already dead). They “hide” and quickly eat while hooding their wings to ‘hide” the mouse from any other birds of prey or predators as they would in the wild.

Next, it was time to work with Rufus. His eyes are amazing (golden) and he looks very Eagle like in the head. His colors are really gorgeous. Although he is younger and less experienced, he did very well and we enjoyed working with him. He is a bigger bird than Sweetie (2 lbs) and you could really feel the power of his feet and talons on your glove. More great videos and he also received his mouse prize at the end.

This is so much fun. It’s worth every penny and it’s a great way to spend some time outdoors in the Highlands NC area. Although, we were just 2 adults, kids also would love this activity.

All I can say is what a cool experience. Normally when I catch the eye of a hawk I look the other way because I don't want to be the next meal. But after a few hours with Pete I have a hole new appreciation for these birds and each of their own personalities. Pete was very professional and gave a great history of everything from the birds to the sport itself. But when the time came to have Sweety Bird come out of the trees and land on my glove for a snack is something I will never forget. By the end of it almost felt like we were just walking in the park with our dogs but in this case they happen to have talons and fly. If you get the chance don't skip over this as its something you won't soon forget.

From the very first call with Curtis Wright Outfitters to the end of our float trip, this company provided outstanding service. We could not have been happier with our guide, Craig Byers. He met us on time, accommodated all our request and needs, was always pleasant, provided us with appropriate advice on techniques and he knew the river well. My husband has some physical limitation and Craig was patient and helpful getting him in and out of the boat. Together on our one day float trip we caught 35 fish, not a bad day for anyone! So often guides will be on their cell phone handling calls from other potential clients or arranging for car transport, etc, but not once did Craig pull out his phone. We could not have been happier with Craig or our experience with Curtis Wright Outfitters

I’ve wanted to have a close encounter with a raptor for ages. Our girls trip to the Asheville area provided the opportunity. A short drive to downtown Weaverville, a quick lunch at the Twisted Laurel, and a short walk down Main Street led us to Jeff, the falconer. After we paid and signed the releases, we followed Jeff to his home, where he keeps his hawks, owl, and peregrine falcon. A cool, overcast day proved the perfect backdrop for great photo ops with these amazing birds. After some education on the “Sport of Kings,” and fun facts about the birds (they can see mouse pee with their UV vision!) it was time to don the glove and get to know these magnificent creatures. Expertly trained by Jeff, the birds understand that people = snacks, and they showed us their finest flying skills! Each of our party of 3 got to fly Sam Adams the Harris hawk a good half-dozen times before we moved on to Oscar the barn owl. He too performed magnificently, eagerly nibbling the raw beef and mouse bits. Jeff clearly loves and respects the animals and provides a top notch experience you will not forget.

We were so glad we were able to do both falconry and fly fishing all in one day! Such great coordination on Jeff’s part. Jeff’s hawks are gorgeous, and we were able to take super amazing videos thanks to his guidance. Will was such a super nice guy and so good at scoping out fish — my husband caught a huge rainbow trout on his first cast!!! We caught so many fish, we are ready to schedule another trip. Thx for such an enjoyable day!

Our first-ever trip to WNC and we HAD to fish! After all, it's one of the best bass fishing states around. We connected with Curtis Wright Outfitters (CWO) - They called back! We had contacted three other guide services and didn't ever hear back. CWO handled everything quickly and professionally to get us ready to go.

Craig was our guide. He was on time, knowledgeable about the French Broad river, and put my daughter and I on a lot of small mouth bass spots. Even with the murky water, we were able to get action and had a GREAT 1/2 day on the water!

Next time we're in the Asheville area, you know we'll be contacting CWO and having Craig take us out again.

We are the same way. If we are going somewhere, there better be a chance to fish. Thanks for spending some time with us and Craig on the water. We look forward to seeing you again and showing you another spot.

We (myself, son, and husband) had a wonderful morning half-day trip with Will. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. He was very knowledgeable about where and how to catch the trout. All 3 of us caught a "grand slam." He also taught us about the different fish species and how to properly catch and release. Curtis Wright Outfitters provided a great guide, waders, snacks, and all needed fishing gear. If you are debating on getting a guide or just going on your own - get a guide! It was pretty humorous, others fishing the area kept moving closer because we were catching fish, and they were not. Will knew exactly what bait to use and what spots to fish. He respects the river and the fish and was a lot of fun. Get a guide and go with Curtis Wright Outfitters. They will work hard to ensure you have a great time.

What an amazing experience !! Thank you Jeff for all your personal attention to help us all enjoy this adventure. We all loved learning about the birds, seeing their homes and being able to actually interact with them as they flew out of the trees and landed on our gloved arm. Something none of us will ever forget. Sam and Hoppy are beautiful birds and the owl is magnificent also. Jeff tells you all about the history of falconry, the diet of the birds and lots of other interesting information.

FYI - My husband uses a manual wheelchair and was able to fully participate in all phases of the experience. He has the honored distinction of being the first wheelchair bound person that Hoppy had ever flown to ......thanks Hoppy.

Thank you ever so much again Jeff for helping all the Ashley's have an amazing time and experience.

What an amazing experience! Getting to meet Jeff and his hawks and having them fly right to our hand was so much fun. It's obvious he is passionate about taking care of his birds and educating about them as well as just having a really good time. We booked this for my 12 year old animal lover as a birthday present and it did not disappoint. Highly recommend.

For our 32nd anniversary I treated my husband to a full day wade trout fishing with our guide Phil. He took us to the perfect spot and, as our first time fly fishing, taught us several different casting techniques. He showed us where the best spots were to find fish and changed out our flies to find what the fish were biting. He also provided a great picnic lunch to get us ready for the rest of the afternoon on the river. I appreciated his patience with me trying to learn to “set, set”! The saying is true… “fish don’t live in ugly places!” Thanks Phil and Curtis Wright Outfitters for a wonderful experience!

What a great way to spend an anniversary and thank you for involving us as well. We truly value that people choose to spend time with us and the birds or with the fish in the river. Thanks again for coming out to spend some time with us!
