I had an overcast day but still had great views and a great day with my guide, Sophia. The train is pulled by a diesel train and only one of the scheduled stops made any attempt to cater for tourists (there were a few stalls...More

Travelled the Circumbaikal railway as part of our Golden Eagle Trans Siberian Rail tour. At Slyuddianka our normal diesel engine was moved to the back of the train (as a "pusher") and a Soviet era Steam driven locomotive was connected to the front. Then proceeded...More

Our experience of this railway was started by our English speaking guide collecting us from our hotel in Listvyanka at 11.00. Just that morning our ferry time had been changed from 10.30AM to 11.30AM and even then she wasn't sure whether that would be the...More

Trip is some 10 hours long. It looked like bit too much for the distance traveled. But then we understood. Train had several stops - some of them on nice views, other on memorial places or, surprisingly, also near the lake beach. Lunch is served...More

Be sure you get seats on the lake side of the train. Tell the agent you won’t go if you can’t get lakeside seats. We were on the hill side and could only see the lake when the train stopped and we got off to...More

Hint take your swimmers or in the buff go a little away from others. 2 hr stop for lunch, swim, sightsee of railway relics, tunnels, bridges etc. water breathtakingly cold but worth it.

Steam hauled for nearly 8 hours - two 2-10-0 locos: views of Lake Baikal and wildlife and plenty of stops for rest and refreshment. Non-touristy. Highly recommended!

Originally a double tracked railway and part of the main line, it is now a single track and used only for tourist trains. This meant plenty of stops along the way to photograph the views and wander through disused tunnels. There is a long stop...More

Easy hiking waits for you if you choose to travel this part of railway. On the one hand you'll have beautiful and clean Baikal lake, on the other hand you'll have some rocky walls to climb or just admire. Many places to install a camp...More

I am having a hard time finding prices for a one-day trip on the Circum Baikal, starting in Irkutsk. We will be there in June. Any recommendations and information will be appreciated. I take it given all the transfers it is best if you go through a tour agency? Thank you in advance.
