My family and I were treated to a wonderful experience on a recent trip from Florida phone the moment Jeff answered my phone call and many questions to the moment we finished our excursion. Lily was our rafting guide and was exceptionally sweet, attentive, and interacted playfully with the kids - but you could also tell she knew how to handle the raft and ensure our safety. We needed something fun for our oldest teenagers but safe enough for our youngest one at 5 years old and this was spot on! Great facility and the best prices of any of the white water excursions around - there was no lack of southern hospitality and fun! We definitely plan on going back!

We loved our experience floating on the New River with Wahoo's so much that we repeated it a few days later. The river was very shallow both days that we went, so having the premium tube with the bottom in it is nice. However, our 12-year old daughter liked the standard tube to make it easier to get in and out when searching for interesting rocks in the riverbed. Wahoo's did a great job of spacing the groups out and all the staff was very friendly. We brought a picnic lunch and ate on the tables under their covered pavilion. Great facility!

We recently had our yearly White Water rafting Troop trip with Wahoo's Adventures. This was our first time booking with them as we wanted to try something different. The whole process was great. I worked with Christina, who was very responsive and followed up on all of our questions. We spent the whole weekend with Wahoo's, camping Friday and Saturday night at their Watauga River campsite. We went caving Saturday morning and white water rafting Saturday afternoon. Wahoo's even provided lunch for the boys, and a nut free lunch for those with a nut allergy. The boys had an amazing time, many have said it has been the best trip they have every had with the Troop. We will definitely return for additional adventures with Wahoo's adventures, I highly recommend their trips and their staff.

We did the river tubing and watauga rafting trips. When we booked we specifically asked if they were taking any safety measures for Covid 19. They told us all buses were running at 50% capacity. When we showed up for our first trip river tubing we were pied into a van at over 100% capacity. There were more people than seat belts in the van. I was told to sit in a seat with my children and disregard seat belts. I chose to sit on the floor of the bus so my children could have seat belts. After this trip we had serious concerns about returning for a rafting trip. I called the office and spoke with a representative who assured me this was unacceptable and would not happen on our rafting trip. For the rafting trip they loaded us into a school bus and every seat was filled and the guides stood for the ride in the lane between seats. One guide decided to pull down his mask and attempted to entertain the bus, asking everyone to clap and cheer. Some could care less and pulled down there mask to cheer while others looked on in horror. I instantly regretted getting on the bus. The activity itself was fun but the transportation is not safe during a pandemic.
As for the blue hole it is not a part of the trip. It is not part of Wahoo. It is a blue hole that is about a minute drive from the Wahoo outpost. When we asked our guide if we would stop he let us know a lot of people ask this and are disappointed to find out its not a part of the rafting trip. He said his job would be much easier if Wahoo advertising was a little clearer.

Pros- Very experienced guides, clear instruction for first time repelling. The gear was high quality and it felt safe. Picnic food was better than usual.
Cons -They could have done a better job with tips/pointers for the rock climbing segment.
The price for this excursion is on the higher end, which makes sense with the new quality equipment. But during the scheduling process I felt pressured to change my excursion date to when they already had customers booked, so they could have the next day off. Then when we get there, the owner/guide asked us if we didn't mind driving our own vehicle, because the van was full! He didn't offer any compensation, when transportation is included in the excursion price. It was a 1 1/2 hr drive round trip through difficult terrain much of it on unpaved switchback roads. When we returned to the departure spot we suggested that he should at least through in a t-shirt, which he declined saying ha ha nice try. This was our polite way of suggesting that we felt a little taken advantage of and should be compensated in some way. At least I would have, had the shoe been on the other foot.
Overall I'm glad we still did it, and for all I know he probably had no clue how it seemed from the customers perspective, so I would encourage anybody to give them a try.

Great time on the river, but staff was disorganized and made no attempt to social distance. Staff mostly did not wear face masks, even the driver of our van. Also, they packed 16 people in a 15 person van so they could save a trip, even though I was told when booking that there would never be more than 10 people in the van.

Our family (12 of us - ages 1 yr to 59) had a fun, relaxing, wonderful day on the river, due in large part to the great staff at Wahoo! Everyone we interacted with was kind, professional and helpful... from the first phone call to getting in the river (with 12 of us, 5 of them kids, it can be quite comical and challenging) to staying to hang out in the river. One bit of info for those going with really young kids - the "crib" tube as they call it is simply a tube with a bottom and a head rest and it did hold our youngest but of course we had to be right there with him. We preferred having him on one of our laps, which worked great. Wahoo was the only place we called that allowed us to take someone that young. There was also a sandbar just past the bridge that made a nice place to stop and hang out and had a bit of a current next to it that we (kids and grandparents) swiftly floated down without a tube, got up and did it again. Lots of fun! I highly recommend using Wahoo for your tubing trip!

Rafting was good and guides were great however the mgt and process was not so good. We paid for our family of 10 - 2 boats $800 And the day before trip had medical emergency with only 1 family member That medically could not go. They would not refund $80 after spending over $800 with them we were totally in shock and mgt had no care attitude it was all about the $ and not people experience to them your just # so Beware if you have the choice there are better managed companies out there I Def would go there. This was our first experience with wahoos and that wasn’t good one. Just FYI .

Our group of 7 took the 3:30 rafting trip down The Watuaga River. Blessed that the pouring rain stopped, and only delayed us a few minutes, we boarded our raft with Reese our guide! Reese was very engaging with our entire group, referring to each of us by name. He was knowledgeable about the history of the area, and managed to get our 3 quiet teens to respond to his fun and silly side. We felt safe, and enjoyed getting involved with the paddling!
Another 2.5 Star review for you Reese! LOL

I've rafted the Nolichucky with Wahoos before and never had an issue, but this particular time we caught some attitude from the guide at the beginning. One of the other parties had cancelled and so we were encouraged to separate our group so all the guides could still raft. I specifically asked when making the reservation that we all stay together in one boat and told it would not be a problem. The day of however, we were "given" a choice but when I answered we would like to stay together the guide seemed pretty upset at us and threatened we were making things more dangerous (if this is the case why would you allow that many people to book a boat on the first place?). He seemed to get over it once he realized he could still guide (I guess one of the others gave up their spot), but it was a little disheartening for our out of town guests to witness.

Has anyone taken their young kids on the Nolichucky Rafting Trip? Or have you taken your teenagers on the Watauga Rafting Trip? I have a 9 & 7 year old and am a little worried about their safety on the class 3 & 4 rapids on the Nolichucky but I also have 4 teenagers who think the class 1 & 2 rapids on the Watauga will be boring.
Written July 24, 2022
I recommend the Nolichucky for your group. As long as your 9 and 7 year olds are comfortable in the water and willing to listen to direction, they will be in good hands with the experienced guides and other adults/teens in your raft. I have a young teen, and I think he would have been disappointed by a float trip down the Watauga River. We all had a fantastic time on the Nolichucky with just the right amount of splash and excitement to keep all of us (older folks included!) feeling safe, having fun, and bonding over our shared efforts. I hope you and your family enjoy your experience with Wahoo's!

Hi visiting in a few weeks. I'm a bit apprehensive about going on a rafting trip but I promised my family I would try. I'm concerned for my 10,9 and 7 year old. How easy is it too fall out of this raft ???
Thanks. Gina

There were 3 children in our raft about the same ages. The 4 "rapids" were very tame. They sat in front and helped with the paddling when needed. Should be fine

Where does Wahoo's put into the New River for Kayaking and where do they pick up? What is the distance on the river?
Written July 19, 2017
As the others said, you drive to their outpost in Todd. They have parking on their property but you have to get there early, or there is parking on the road. You ride their vans up to the put in point (5 min) and then kayak back to their outpost. When I went last weekend, it was very busy at the outpost but they were so organized that I never had to wait more than 7-8 min for a shuttle. Also, even after you are finished with the kayak trip you paid for, you are welcome to hang out at the outpost and grill out, play volleyball, play cornhole, or just play in the water. After our kayak trip, we rented some tubes and took the shuttle back and tubed down, a leisurely ride. They have a special where you can do all the activities: kayak, tube, canoe and stand up paddling for one price. Well worth it. We were there from 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. and were still having fun but had to leave.

I am considering booking for Saturday October 21. there would be 3 adults, 16 yr old, 2-12 year old, a 9 yr old and a 7 year old. Is this a good time for this experience. What would the rates be and what times do you do the rafting. During this time of year what is appropriate dress?
Written April 24, 2017
Thanks for your questions. I regret to say that is the driest time of year as well we usually close the week before. Sorry!

Hi, are you open in March? and pricing?
Written January 6, 2017
Thank you for the question concerning Wahoo's operating in March.
That is a tricky thing to answer. The weather determines when we open. If spring rains come early, whitewater rafting is at its best in late March, early April. As for our lazy river, the water is still pretty chilly, so I would only suggest canoeing at that time of the year.
Hope this answer as helped, and we would love to see you on the river with Wahoo's!
Best for a fantastic 2017!

Are the tubes tied together with group. Or do they all float their own ways?
Written July 30, 2016
They will give you rope if you ask for it to tie up yourself.

What are you talking about? I need know. I am the owner and would love to talk with you about your experience, and correct this. I would like to invite you for free... We do not have lockers due to the fact that your car is parked at the end of the river with your stuff kept in the car. Far more convenient/secure and at no charge to you. Please understand, I have vested my life into providing the best experience for my guests as possible. All my competitors can only offer you is a porta john and a empty unsecured parking lot; whereas, we are able to accommodate you with private property that was specifically designed for our guest's convenience and to secure your vehicle. Let's correct this together and allow me to try to win your business back.
Jeff Stanley
Written July 5, 2015
The review from the unhappy guest concerning lockers doesn't make any sense at all. They give you a safe place to leave your keys, clean restrooms and curtains to change behind. Just leave your dry clothes in your car and grab them to change into when you get back. It takes all of two minutes :) there were four of us and we had no problems at all.
