Bob and Elaine are absolutely wonderful and very pleasant to be around. They are both extremely knowledgeable, and you can tell they absolutely love what they do. I highly recommend Rio Doce Gem Mine over any mine in the area, its a smaller shop, more personable, and their prices are way cheaper than other mines in the area.

They will help you find the best gems that are cut worthy, along with answering any questions you have.

Their gems are amazing and high quality!

Don't pass this shop up!

What a fun and rewarding experience. Not only did I learn how to facet a gem, but I left with a beautiful, 14mm (huge) brilliant cut round quartz stone that I actually cut and polished myself!
I was simply looking to learn about polishing and cutting the raw gems I had recently mined. When I saw the Lapidary Faceting Day Class at Rio Doce Gem Mine, I signed up.
The instructor was one of the owners, Elaine, a professional and highly skilled gemologist. She was very patient and explained the how and why’s of what we were doing. Her one-on-one instruction was great. Her husband and co-owner, Bob, worked close by on Faceting gems for customers and was also happy to help out if I had a question or needed guidance. There was another student in the room. She was halfway through her six week program and she seemed to be enjoying the course.
In the end, I learned a lot about this highly technical trade, I developed a new appreciation for their craftsmanship and I left with a fabulous rock on my finger! Thank you so much Elaine and Bob!!!

Rio Doce provides an outstanding gem mining experience for beginners and experienced rock collectors. This was our second trip to Spruce Pine and we were very excited to return to Rio Doce. We purchased the large 5 gallon bucket with two free cuts and we were pleased with the large variety of stones, as well as the size of many of the gems that we found. After finding our rocks, a staff member sorted our large find and explained which rocks would be good for cutting and/or tumbling. She answered questions as well as educated us on our gems. Additionally, she bagged and labeled the rocks for us to take home. The quantity and quality of rocks was outstanding in addition to the outstanding personal customer service we received. We purchased 4 to-go bags of gems that we sorted at home. We found the same quality and quantity of gems in the bags as we had found on site at Rio Doce. Rio Doce is now our go to location for gem mining in Spruce Pine! The other two gem mining establishments do not meet the Rio Doce standard of rocks/gems and customer service! We will return soon!

We had an amazing experience and found absolutely beautiful stones! Both Bob and Elaine are extremely knowledgeable and provide you with honest opinions on which stone are the best for cutting and setting. They are down to earth people and that makes it easy to connect with them. We visited 3 days in a row!
I highly recommend visiting Rio Doce Gem Mines!

GIA! Gem cutter on site. Will mail them to you. Knowledgeable friendly and informative. Jewelry-wire wrapped. Set. Necklaces. It was too cold to sluce so we bought bags to go. Reasonable prices for the gems and minerals. Plus included a coupon for a free cut and not just for a cabochon

This is a long overdue review of the Rio Doce Gem Mine, which we visited back when Jerry Call and his wife owned and ran the place (last visit was probably 2014). Our family has visited here four separate times, and each time was great. The more expensive buckets include the cost of getting a stone or two cut into a gemstone. We had so much fun, and found so many beautiful stones during our first visit, we returned the following day to do it again. We left five or six stones there for the staff to cut (with stunning results). We had so many extra gem quality stones that I learned how to cut stones myself. After getting the "gem mining" bug, we've visited many places - but almost nowhere else have we found the sheer quantity, quality, and variety of stones for the price as we have at the Rio Doce. Sara in the gift shop is a delight, and we look forward to seeing her every time we return. The place isn't usually very busy, and they take their time going over your finds with you...or just generally chit-chatting. There is lots of gorgeous jewelry there as well, at reasonable prices. If you are only going to visit one gem mine, make sure it is the Rio Doce.

I can’t say enough good things about this roadside mine. We were traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway and it was really foggy. I had read about other roadside mines and was hesitant to stop at this one. However, a backseat antsy two year old who loves rocks needed to get out and use some energy so we stopped. We opted for the large family bucket. I didn’t feel like I was being upsold or anything, just hoped it would entertain my daughter for a bit longer! We are so glad we stopped. She had a blast sifting the rocks and sorting them at the end. For the money we paid I certainly felt we got the value out of the experience. It was super helpful that they had a wooden board with samples of some of the rocks we were looking at so we knew what was what. A week later my daughter is still playing with (and sorting) her rocks. So thankful we found this amazing mine!

If you want the best gems and the best quantity for your dollar, this is the place. My friend and I stopped by to look at their gift shop and couldn't believe the quantity of gems and stone people were bringing in from panning. We decided to give it a try and had the best time. We were amazed at the amount of stones in our bucket. I had such a great experience and afternoon visiting with the owners Elaine and Bob. I left feeling like they are family. They are so cordial and helpful and do cutting on site. I worked with Sarah, one of their employees and she was great helping me decide which stone I should have cut. We live in Illinois and travel to NC for business and will be back to Rio Doce every chance we get.

I have been here many times, bringing guests, my grandchildren. The owners are so nice, and they will have someone assist you if they are not too busy and show you what in your bucket is really valuable, because sometimes you cannot tell. Their jewelry inside is beautiful, and they are the real deal, honest, caring, and I just think the world of them. I love to stop by just to see what new baubles they have in, and to say hello.
