Had a blast gem grubbing at Rio Doce. I actually did this last year but did not write a review. They have terrific stones and it was so much fun searching for them in the slue. It was a little chilly but we made it through our bucket. The jewelers are very helpful and knowledgeable. They explain in detail what stone will work best for which cut. Very pleasant and rewarding experience!

Rio Doce provides an outstanding gem mining experience for beginners and experienced rock collectors. This was our second trip to Spruce Pine and we were very excited to return to Rio Doce. We purchased the large 5 gallon bucket with two free cuts and we were pleased with the large variety of stones, as well as the size of many of the gems that we found. After finding our rocks, a staff member sorted our large find and explained which rocks would be good for cutting and/or tumbling. She answered questions as well as educated us on our gems. Additionally, she bagged and labeled the rocks for us to take home. The quantity and quality of rocks was outstanding in addition to the outstanding personal customer service we received. We purchased 4 to-go bags of gems that we sorted at home. We found the same quality and quantity of gems in the bags as we had found on site at Rio Doce. Rio Doce is now our go to location for gem mining in Spruce Pine! The other two gem mining establishments do not meet the Rio Doce standard of rocks/gems and customer service! We will return soon!

My job recently landed me in Spruce Pine, NC for a week. There are several places that offer gemstone mining in the area, something I’ve always found enjoyable. I selected the Rio Doce Gem Mine and it was a blast! After having such good luck with my first bucket, I opted for a second bucket the same day and went for a third bucket before the week was up. I’ve panned for gemstones a few times before, but the variety of stones at Rio Doce was much better than other locations I’ve visited. The staff is great and works with you to identify your gemstones and, more importantly, identify the best ones to have cut. My cut stones recently arrived, and they are beautiful! Rio Doce has an extensive selection of stones and jewelry in their shop, and I found their prices to be reasonable. For gemstone aficionados, be sure to check out the Portuguese cut stones. They are divine! Unlike most mines, Rio Doce offers lapidary classes, including 1-day intro classes. For years, I’ve been interested in learning how to cut stones, so I absolutely had to take the intro class while I was in the area. I opted for the faceting class, and in a single day, I cut a 9-carat brilliant canary citrine under the expert guidance of Elaine Jones, who, together with her husband, Bob, owns the company. Hopefully in the spring I can start the full lapidary course!

Thank you for the kind review. Covid has put so many things on hold. Hope you are well. Glad you enjoyed your class. Always fun to turn a rock into a gem stone. Let’s the sparkle out.

Employees were helpful and also discussed our findings with us! We came away with some great gems. The costs of cutting and setting seemed reasonable.
