Toured the old jail - very small - has several rooms set up as it would've been. Nice tour guides - very informative. There is an old graveyard across the road that was interesting to walk through, too.

Great Tour

Great tour of the old jail. It has some very interesting artifacts. It's across from the old cemetery, which is also a must do tour.

Interesting and free!

Our family really enjoyed this little jail. You can see where the family lived that ran the jail, set up as it would have been. Read some great history about the building and go upstairs to step inside the cells. Some wonderful volunteers are there to tell you about the jail and show you around. Pretty tight space but so cool to see. You can even get a mug shot taken and lots of fun photo ops inside the cells. Overall I would recommend you stop by. We were in and out in about 30 mins.

Unusual but fun

Interesting historical perspective and insights can be gained comparing this with others of the period. Wouldn't want a long sejour.

Interesting place
Jul 2018 • Family
Unique stop in Southport. We got to tour the building which had various items on display ranging from coal/woodstove from the early 1900s, to uniforms the prisoners had to wear. Guides are available to give you more in depth information about the jail's history. Worth the visit!

A Great Piece of Local History
Jul 2018 • Family
The Old Jail as it is called is a great piece of local history located a few blocks off of Howe Street. It is well preserved and has local volunteers doing tours and bringing history back to life. My children loved going there multiple times as they grew up

Fun place to visit!

This was a very interesting place to visit with lots of great history. The docents were very interesting and we learned a lot. There was even a place where we could get our mug shots taken! It was very interesting to learn that the jail keeper and his family lived in a room there and the jailkeeper's wife was tasked with making meals for the prisoners!

Great Little Museum
Apr 2018 • Family
Stopped here with 4 teenagers and they all had a good time. This is a really nicely done museum. Tons of great information and the docents are very knowledgable. It is just a 20-30 minute tour so it is a great little stop. I am sure younger kids would love it. They have a scavenger hunt, you can go in jail cells and take fun mugshots. It is in a pretty little neighborhood as well.

Cute little gem off the beaten path. Our docent was very knowledgable about the jail and it's history. We enjoyed reading the log of prisoners and their crimes. The cells were fun to walk through and interesting to hear their history.
