A MUST FOR OUR FUTURE
Mar 2018 • Family
This is a converted Bank building of the largest bank in the country. In side is the story of a small rural county that was the star of something BIG.

Gives a quick history without being boring. Has some unique artifacts. Especially liked the details of the doll house.

Interesting for Locals

My teen and I went here looking for information on the county's role in the Civil War. We found what we needed and saw some other interesting things. The employees in this center are friendly and helpful.

Interesting

Located only a few miles east off I 95 at exit 95 for a travel break. The history of the architecture and Johnston County people, and events are on display in the small historical site.

Great Little bit of History
May 2016 • Family
Admission is free, donations accepted. 1st floor Gallery had a really nice display of local Confederate history. Sherman was Headquartered in Smithfield as the war ended. The reference library on the third floor is very extensive if you are looking for relatives that lived in Johnston County.

A great place to visit

The Heritage Center is a treasure for those who like history and particularly for those with family roots in Johnston County and the surrounding area. The first floor is home to rotating exhibits showing how people lived and worked. These exhibits are suitable for any age and may spark an interest in history in children.

The real treasure is the third floor research room. If you have ancestors who lived in the Johnston county area, you'll find LOTS of materials about the families/businesses/etc of Johnston County. The staff is very knowledgeable and can help you get started on your family history--or maybe break down those brick walls. If you plan to research, allot a few hours (or all day). There are several restaurants nearby and parking is readily available.

Amazing Discovery!
Feb 2015 • Family
I stopped in the Heritage Center following my grandmother's passing a few years ago, and the person who assisted me was amazing. She was able to get information on my family tracing back to 1823...what an amazing find!! Since families didn't move about as they do today, it made things easy, but the worker at the location was simply AMAZING...nice, helpful, pleasant...I can't say enough about how helpful she was!! I was able to get copies of old census information and a marriage certificate dating back to 1910. I wished I had more time...can't wait to go back.

This place is amazing!!

great staff and useful resources

The exhibit on the first floor is small. The real asset is on the 3rd floor where county records and other genealogical resources can be found. This is a great collection. The staff are extremely knowledgeable. They are the heart of the center.
