Kelly Vernon at Tobacco Road Travel is fantastic. We are a group of 16 going to the Pinehurst area this fall. She was able to give me some very good suggestions about accommodation and was very helpful when I was selecting the courses but still left the final decision to me. She was patient and listened well and was able... More

My grandson and I pulled intoTobacco Road on a rainy late December morning --didn't know quite what to expect. Went in to the clubhouse --treated very nicely-- went to the driving range and hit a few balls. At the first tee the starter got us off instantly --very nice man -- set us up for the first hole. Looking out... More

This is one of the coolest golf courses I have played. I like to golf here at least once a year. I would recommend everyone play this course at least once. Challenging and different from everything else in the area. Beautiful course.

Sean M, Fun, challenge, and beauty, are among the best summations one can give regarding a round of golf, perhaps the only thing to improve the day would be good swings and even better company. Mike Strantz designed his courses with a belief that whether it was a player’s first or fiftieth time playing the course, the desire to play... More

I was waiting to hit it in the clown's mouth on 18 to win a free game. No fun with all those blind shots. If I wanted to play golf with my eyes closed, this is the place to do it.

Jeff M, Classical music, fine wine, and art are widely appreciated, studied, and crafted. Golf, like the aforementioned is widely appreciated, studied, and the craft of playing honed by the millions of golfers across the world. However, the qualities and attributes as to what makes an individual course “great” is as varied as genres of music, the aging process of... More

I played the course for the first time in a group of first timers, and had an experience to remember. The course conditions were nearly perfect. The staff warm and professional. This course is visually intimidating and beautiful at the same time. The riding cart and range is inclusive. So many things about this course set it apart from any golf... More

Bruce F, The anticipation, the excitement, the thrill of playing the game in an awe-inspiring setting was a goal course designer Mike Strantz sought and achieved. He believed that every player should have a breathtaking experience and look back on the day and say, “wow, I really got to play there.” Your remarks will be passed along to our superintendent... Other than Pebble Beach, which I played many years ago, before it got so expensive, Tobacco Road may be the best course I've ever played. So many spectacular holes! 6, 8, 9, and 14 thru 18, as well as all four par 5s, would be "signature" holes on most any other course. (Especially impressive was the massive reddish-sand expanse protecting... More

I had the chance to play Tobacco Road Golf Course today with two friends and, wow! It was awesome! I am already making plans to come back to NC next year to play it again. I hesitated a bit at the $90 price tag because the course is touted as being particularly tough, and it is, but it's fair, especially... More

MDahl, First, thank you for the review, and secondly, always excited to hear when people are already planning trips back to the area. The Sandhills of North Carolina feature one of the best arrays of golf in the country, from classicists like Donald Ross to a modern interpretation of Golden Age Architecture by Coore & Crenshaw, and others in between... My buddy and I came for a golf VaCa. Stayed at pinehurst and played 5 of their course and then played Tobacco Road. It is visually stunning! If you like traditional golf, this is NOT for you. If you like shotmaking golf and are looking for a day of "fun" golf, you will love it. An occasional blind shot and... More

Sacho K, Great review! Thank you for sharing what sounds like a great vacation for golf. Course designer, Mike Strantz, was adamant that the game be fun, and give the player chances to hit a great shot over seeming impossible odds throughout the round. His flair for dramatic course features are more often seen along the coast of the British... More

Truly enjoyed our round at Tobacco Road, a course with great course conditions, many blind shots and lots of elevation change. A very unique layout, one that will challenge players of all skill levels. Can't wait to play it again!

This course is simply FUN! There is a lot of shots you hit blind and there is a lot of visual awareness that comes into play on most holes. Elevation changes galore and visually stimulating on every shot such as the beast of hole 9. There is usually more fairway and more green there than you think. The fairways and... More

Bandit2118, Many thanks for the review, great player’s insight and hints to all the newcomers. Mike Strantz designed a golf course and theatre devoted to the playing of the game. The thrill of watching a well-played shot soar over seemingly impossible odds and come to rest safely on the other side is offset by the humps, bumps, and swales that... More
