This review covers the Avon through York, Northam and Toodyay and places in between. Water levels were fairly low but some large pools in places with various water birds sighted. From the ford in York and the suspension bridge over through to Northam with the fountains, the black & white swans, a walk on the suspension bridge for the photo opportunities and thence Toodyay where water levels seemed at their lowest. The river plays an important role with a catchment area of some 125,000 sq.km. We noticed many small brooks, some devoid of water, that form tributaries of the Avon. My wife an I agreed that it would be a nice drive to follow the course of the Avon from Lake Yealering through to where it joins the Swan River.

Great birdwatching and stroll along the Avon River. Fantastic information about the Noongar culture. Well worth a visit when in Northam.

its a river, nothing more, nothing less. very pretty but certainly not worth a trip just to see it. situatatED in the Avon valley which again is pretty & am sure nature lovers would love it, but a heck of a drive & close to one horse towns such as northam & too-jay. I wouldnt waste my time.

The walk along the the river bank is a relaxing stroll with great scenery. Great photo opportunity of the magnificence of the river can be achieved on the pedestrian suspension bridge near Northam town centre. Relax and unwind as you won't regret it.

Having paddled the Avon many times, I can honestly say the river is a sad comparison to a paddlers dream. Quite often there is a foul odour coming from its waters. It only really runs during the winter months- the rest if the year it's only good as a photographic backdrop.

As an ex Brit from nearly 40 years ago, it was a pleasure to see white Mute swans swimming with Australian black swans, & by having a decent zoom I was able to capture them many times ! There were quite a few unexpected birds in the river that I photographed including black winged Stilts, white spoonbills, & domestic geese! There were also descendents from mallard ducks which have interbred with Native Black ducks which have resulted in various sizes of similar looking ducks with Australian teal also in the mix! We parked outside the tourist information ( Lee was very helpful) then walked across the suspension bridge to the far bank , turned left & followed the path to the road bridge , crossed it & then back to the car along the return path. Very enjoyable stroll which we look forward to doing again soon !

Great place to come and bring the family, Bernard park in Northam offers meals and coffee, walk along the track next to the old mill all the way to Burlong pool. Walks and treks are clearly marked, access for canoes, kayaks, great viewing for Avon Descent.

There is an annual event held here once a year called the Avon Descent. It sports kayaks and speed boats that head down river to Perth in Winter. It attracts participants from all over the world.
The other 364 days of the year it is a bird sanctuary. There are swans, ducks and various other river birds that may appeal to an ornithologist.
There is a sway bridge that connects the two river banks at Bernard Park near the town center.
The banks on the river's edge are left pretty much to mother nature. The water is not safe due to decades of industrialization and farming drainage.
The birdlife is what gives this pocket of water its three stars rating.
