About
Marvel at the dramatic rocky headlands, sheltered bays and tall eucalyptus woodlands on Woody Island Nature Reserve- only a 40-minute ferry ride from Esperance. Rich in history, Woody Island is one of 105 islands in the Recherche Archipelago (commonly known as the Bay of Isles) and is the only island open to visitors for day trips and camping. Woody Island lacks snakes and introduced predators, making it a haven for wildlife such as birds and lizards. Learn about the Island’s history and get close to nature during the guided hike Island Top bushwalk • Snorkel in the crystal clear waters of Shearwater Bay and colourful marine life (snorkeling gear for rent) • Exploring the nature trails & boardwalks taking in spectacular views of the island • Fishing from the main jetty is also popular – keep an eye out for playful dolphins and inquisitive sea lions! With a wealth of things to see and do, a trip to Woody Island is a must when visiting Esperance.

Our own little island paradise
Mar 2021
Our first time to Woody Island and we weren't disappointed. The first night we had the whole island to ourselves apart from the caretakers. We had a luxury couples retreat tent for 2 nights and the staff kindly changed our booking so that we got the tent with the most magnificent view of the ocean. It was so comfortable and luxurious. The caretakers were incredibly friendly and helpful. The camp kitchen was very well equipped and we really enjoyed the island walks and the general peace and quiet.

Best holiday destination in the State
Mar 2021
Woody Island simply gets better! I have been coming here annually for at least 12 years, but the last two visits have excelled. New canvas tents, with comfortable double beds, a hard and soft pillow, crisp white sheets. All set under trees with ocean views. The island is a 240ha nature reserve with stunning walk trails having views of the coastline and islands in the archipelago. Wildlife includes numerous bird species, quails, skinks, kangaroos....but no snakes. The visitors Center has stunning ocean views, a bar and a small but tasty menu. If you want a totally relaxing holiday, this takes some beating.

Wow what a fantastic day trip

Wow what a fantastic day trip.
It would be even better to have stayed a few nights.

Great island with plenty to do and a shop for food, drinks, snorkeling equipment or fishing equipment.

The kangaroos are fantastic as are the birds and especially the quail.

The guided walk was interesting. The first half is all uphill but the second half is all downhill :)

They have just upgraded all the tent sites so that they are on timber platforms and they are fantastic!

The boat was pretty good also being twin hull is very stable and you can stand at the bow if you want.

I definitely will go back.

This should be in the top 5 or 10 things to do in Esperance.

Australia Day Long Weekend
Jan 2020 • Friends
My friend and I had a little get away to Woody Island for the night and had such a wonderful time. The staff, views and facilities were lovely. We departed and got to see some dolphins and seals, finishing off with tea/coffee and cake at the cafe.

We went snorkelling, on the guided tour around the island and even went to the sneaky skinny dip point. If your looking to get away for a weekend or even a night I couldn’t recommend this higher! It’s reasonably priced and a time to remember. Thank you woody island crew for everything!

Nature at its best
Oct 2019
Take a cruise to Woody Island - one of 200 in the Recherche Archipelago off the coast of Esperance in the Great Southern Ocean - enjoy some delightful hiking trails whilst there - sit on some smooth pink granite by the crystal-clear water’s edge - soak up the silence and simply relax breathing in the unpolluted air whilst admiring nature’s beauty.

Amazing relaxing mini holiday

Spent Easter Break on the Island. What a wonderful relaxing place. Boat trip was a direct trip to Island and took 40 mintues. The staff are wonderful. You can take your own food and drink or go to the resturant where the food was lovely and drinks reasonable price.

Boat trip and island walking tour
Apr 2019 • Couples
This trip is certainly worth it. The boat takes you a few of the islands showing visitors dolphins, sea eagles and seals. Then it’s onto Woody Island for morning tea and guided walk around the island. The guided walk is really two walks, a short easy walk and the for those interested a slightly harder walk to get views across the Recherche Archipelago , Frenchman’s Peak and over to Cape Le Grand.

There is time for lunch on the island at the cafe, before boarding the boat for a quick trip back to Esperance.

Fantastic tour
Feb 2019 • Couples
Woody Island Eco Tours organise a fantastic day out. They tour the Recherche Archipelagos and talk about the islands and wild life before going to Woody Island. Such a fantastic day. They staff were alll super friendly and eager to answer any questions we had. The snorkeling was wonderful. I would love to go stay for a few days in the tents, they look so comfortable and yet still remote. Highly recommend this tour. Thanks to all the staff for making it so great.
