Great peaceful place to visit
Feb 2020 • Family
Lovely place to visit on the highest point in Kangaroo Ground. Nice large carpark. Toilets. Picnic tables. There is the obvious tower that is easy to climb the spiral staircase - all of 59 steps. Views 360 degrees to Melbourne and back to the Dandenongs.
Nice interpretation boards with relevant and interesting information.
There is also a more modern viewing platform. Nicely made but could benefit from some further info as it has nice large display boards.
I’ve come here a few times just for the serenity that embraces you in a quiet but stunning environment.

Stunning views and beautiful memorial.
Dec 2019
Only dropped by while driving and saw the memorial tower in our rear view mirror. Very pleased we did as it provided stunning views from the tower. There is no cost to visit.

The memorials dotted around the site were though provoking. It was moving to see a pine tree which was a descendent of the famous lone pine in Gallipoli.

There is ample parking and toilets on site. Anyone with issues walking up a lot of steps will find the steps to the top of the tower difficult.

It was a shame that the pavilion was in-between exhibits being changed. This didn't detract from the visit though.

Highly recommend a visit to this site.

Kangaroo Ground/ Eltham War Memorial Park - and its "Garden Hill" Viewing Platform Historic Display
Oct 2018
"Garden Hill"'s historic display in the Viewing Platform to the west of the War Memorial Tower - a hidden historic treasure under a shelter from rain and sun (but not great winds).
Most people seem to only discover the war memorial features of this park, ( which other reviewers speak about) but there is much more of interest to the west of the tower in the "Garden Hill" historic display in the Viewing Platform..
This comprehensive display starts with the Wurundjeri and Kulin history of the Melbourne area, before introducing European settlement and the war contributions. It is very well set out and explained.
A great history lesson in one place where, without having to climb a big staircase, you can look over great views of the plain Melbourne sits in, and think about what the display is saying about changes in human occupation and food production over time.
Plenty of parking on-site.

A great place to reflect ...
Aug 2019
I drive past this place often and sometimes decide to pull in. It has great views and gives you a chance to reflect upon all the young local boys who went off to war. A truly sacred site for the Eltham district.

Nice little stop
Jul 2019 • Family
There's a public toilet.
Climb the 4-flight steep spiral staircases and you will get the view of the city and mountains in the southern- eastern suburbs.
Large oval for little people to run around. There's a pergola at the top of the hill. Nice place for a picnic.

A good location for a picnic
Jan 2018 • Family
A building standing high on a hill outside Eltham. From the top you get a great view of the area. Set in a grassy, well treed area, it is a good location to take kids to play safely and to have a picnic. If you need a snack the small shop in Kangaroo Ground is about 1km away.

A local showed me this great place.......
Jul 2017 • Friends
This is the sort of landmark attraction that only a local would know existed. Luckily I was holidaying with one at the time.
You can see for miles from this lookout, Melbourne City in the west to Dandenong Mountains in the east.
There is informative posters on the walls of the lookout too, for the interested tourists. Beautiful garden setting and ample carparking close to both the lookout and the tower.
