About
The Gallery has a unique place amongst Australia’s public galleries through its commitment to supporting and promoting textile and fibre art - a curatorial and collection focus that began in the early 1970s. Today the collection is arguably the most significant of its kind in Australia. While the permanent collection is not always on exhibition, the Gallery maintains its dedication to highlighting excellence, innovation and diversity in contemporary textile and fibre art practice through an annual exhibition program featuring the work of visiting artists and exhibitions that are touring from other public galleries. The gallery is fully accessible from the Vincent Street entrance. Lift access between levels inside the facility is available for gallery visitors. Accessible toilets including baby change facilities are also available. Tours for schools and non-profit organisations can be accommodated subject to advance notice.

Decent gallery
Mar 2021 • Couples
The gallery building itself was recently upgraded and has some nice, open and minimalistic display spaces - there were 3 collections on display while I visited and it took me the best part of an hour to walk through and look at each piece/read the info about it. A nice spot to visit in Ararat!

Fabulous work
Feb 2021
During a recent holiday in Victoria, we went to a number of regional museums and this was a standout. The quality of the work on display. The range of art work. The helpfulness of the staff. This gallery has a special focus on textiles and is absolutely worth a visit.

Delightful

Loved this gallery, it's quietly beautiful permanent exhibition and its loud and thought provoking current exhibition. The woman on the information desk was nothing short of brilliant and I felt very welcomed

TAMA - Celebrating 50 Years
Nov 2019
What an amazing regional space! The current exhibition celebrates the gallery's 50 year dedication to fibre and textile art. Given the time span, the pieces are eclectic and diverse. I checked with the front desk about taking photos and I was encouraged but without the flash (of course). And I was the sole occupant. Entry into the gallery is free; however donations are welcomed.

Excellent regional gallery - loved it!
Dec 2018 • Solo
This small regional gallery specialises in contemporary textiles: TAMA = Textile Art Museum Australia. Personally, I'd be happy to see the whole gallery filled with their textile pieces. But they have other offerings as well. When I visited, other exhibits included 'Animalia Australis' from the collection of the Ballarat Art Gallery (I love the way regional galleries share their collections) and small scale sculptures by Paul E Mason.
The exhibits were well staged and the lighting was very good - there was virtually no need to look at exhibits from different angles to avoid spotlight glare - which is so common and so annoying in so many galleries.
Being small, it doesn't take a long time to see the exhibits. If you were travelling through Ararat, visiting the gallery (plus or minus a meal or snack locally) would make an excellent 'stop and revive to survive' break in a long journey.
Of course, if Ararat is your destination, this is a must-see.
Free entry.
The attendant on duty was friendly and helpful but definitely not pushy.
A most enjoyable visit.

Kylie visit.
Aug 2018 • Friends
Just been to see the Kylie Minogue 'Kylie on Stage' exhibition- which is free, by the way. Very friendly staff, and the display of costumes was amazing to see. Not what you may be expecting in regional areas, but come and see it, and you don't have to be a huge fan to enjoy it.

An interesting hour
Jan 2017 • Couples
We spent an interesting hour here while on holiday in Ararat. The exhibition was "S--t Happens". Exhibition title not my bad language. The very helpful staff member, in telling us about the exhibits, was almost apologetic to us Scots re the title! It was an interesting display of work which did not offend. Also on show was a community display. A wall hanging in woll with a renewables theme. Very impressive.

There is a "h" and an "i" missing in case you had not guessed. It was the only way toiget the review acceoted!!

Good Travel Break
Oct 2016 • Couples
We always try to break our trips from Adelaide-to Melbounre (and vice versa) so checked out this gallery. Reasonably interesting collection of art by Lily Mae Martin: study of portraits, tasteful nudes (ink on linen) and colours.
Admission is free and there is ample parking. The building itself is interesting and has been well maintained.
There are art classes/workshops held here also.
Good half hour road-break.
