We came to the Chateau as our last stop for the day on our Barossa wine tastings experience after being to Seppeltsfeild and Jacob’s Creek (also great service).

It was our honeymoon and Mitch had us for our tour and tasting.

Mitch was an absolute legend. The main thing we wanted to do here was actually learn what wines we liked and why, how they are made and what the differences are and learn a bit about the whole area which we had it gotten anywhere else.

Mitch really delivered, encouraged questions throughout the whole experience, we learnt about how the Chateau began, the exports etc, how the new owner made it was it was today. We found other wineries focused solely on their history however learning about the Barossa in general, about other wineries and then the Chateau Tanunda is a very honest and noble way to go about the information presented.

Mitch was very engaging and we could tell he was excited about wine in general and wanted to share his passion with us which he did. He went above and beyond with the tasting and personal experience getting to know us and telling us a little about himself and his own journey.

We ended up purchasing 12 bottles of the 2018 Grand Barossa Shiraz which we will now drink one of every year on our wedding anniversary.

Because of Mitch, we will never forget our tour of the Chateau Tanunda he really made the experience what it was and we will recommend anyone at all to come to the winery for a tour and tasting.

We booked a tour at Chateau Tanunda to learn something of the history of this impressive winery and the wines it produces.
It is a magnificent building, wonderfully restored, set in well-kept gardens. The chateau was well worth a visit, but the wine-tasting tour made it an especially memorable one. Darkie gave us the history then set us down for a very enjoyable tutorial on wine and an appreciation tasting of the range Tanunda produces. He was engaging and well informed, giving us an appreciation of the wines that held our attention throughout. His knowledge of and love for wines shone through. The $50 tasting tour was well worth it.

With a whole day to fill in and no car, we went to the information centre in Tanunda to find out what we could do. They were very helpful and pointed us in the direction of Chateau Tanunda which was about 500m from the town centre. It was very surprising to find such and impressive building and vineyards so close to town. We went to the cellar door and we greeted by Mitch with the option of looking around and reading the history of the place and then maybe having a wine tasting. We did both and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Mitch was knowledgeable yet made us feel very relaxed even though we aren’t the biggest wine drinkers in the world. The place has a remarkable story and some very impressive wines. This place is worth the visit just to see the building and grounds, but if you love wine, you won’t be disappointed.

We are very consistent consumers of the Grand Barossa Riesling. A beautiful property but a disappointing experience. While lovely wine, the service was extremely lacklustre & lacking any sort of energy & enthusiasm. The cost of tasting was $20 each and like most wineries the cost didn’t come off your end wine purchase. As a result we left disappointed and empty handed. The experience wasn’t worth the $20. While we’ll continue to purchase the wine we won’t at cellar door prices nor would we recommend anyone doing the tasting experience. Visit the property to ‘tick the box’ as it really is a lovely property and the birthplace of the Barossa wine industry….but that’s it.

We walked to Chateau Tanunda today from our accommodation in the hope of a tasting then a bottle of wine and a platter in the beautiful sunshine. When we walked in the man behind the counter looked up and then totally ignored us. A few seconds later some other people walked in and past us and he proceeded to serve them! Finally he came over to us and I asked if we could do the $10 tasting. He said they were far too busy to do tastings (even though it was a Monday and very quiet). I then asked if we could order a glass of wine. He said that we could but then walked away to serve someone else. We were totally taken aback and ended up leaving a few minutes later when he didn’t return. We had read such great reviews for this winery but will not be returning and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. So disappointing!

Dear lmalouf, Unfortunately we had a very large group booking that day and technically we are closed to private tastings. However, we will always try and accommodate and do our best but, without an appointment especially on a busy day we may not be able to always accommodate everyone. To avoid disappointment it is best to book online, call or send us an email. We are looking forward to welcoming you again in the future Cheers, Chateau Tanunda Team

Very impressed with the stunning winery and beautiful gardens BUT we were extremely disappointed with the wine tasting experience. We (a couple) decided to try the wine tasting and we were told it was $10. If we decided to purchase any wine the $10 would not be charged. It was a sit at table tasting. The staff were friendly but it took forever to get through our wine tasting as the staff were also serving other wine tasting customers plus serving at the counter. The wines were good so decided to purchase a bottle for $25. But it was going to cost us $35 due to the fact that it was $10 each to taste. ($20 for a couple). So we purchased 2 bottles for $50. Due to taking so long to finish the tasting, we missed out on visiting other wineries in the Barossa Valley before they shut for the day. If only I had read some of the other negative reviews, we would not have bothered to do the wine tasting. It is highly recommended to see the stunning historic buildings, gardens and beautiful views of the surrounding vineyards and Barossa ranges. BUT not recommending the wine tasting.

Hi Sophie V! We apologise for the inconveniences that it has cost you, rest assured that we value all the comments made in this platform to improve the services we render in the future. All our wine tastings are seated and minimum fee is 10$ per person and not per couple or group. We allow 45 minutes + for our experience so that it is relaxing and enjoyable. My daughter booked us in for this activity and we sat at a tasting counter and tasted numerous wines and aperitifs. It was well managed by a lady with a sound knowledge of wines, good value for money and a pleasant way to spend an hour or two.

Another couple from interstate joined us and added to the session with great humour and conversation.

Don’t take your 97 year old aunt to wine tasting at Chateau Tanunda. We observed how difficult the many steps and cobblestones are to negotiate. Geared towards fit international tourists, the set up for paid wine-tasting is elaborate and expensive: those having free wine tasting get short shrift.

Wonderful old building steeped in history and with beautiful gardens. From the moment we walked in it was welcoming. We were encouraged to walk around and look at the old pictures, the wine barrels and the set up. We did the discovery tasting with Mitch who was awesome, knowledgeable and friendly. Took a couple of bottles home with us!
Great to see a family run business keeping the tradition going.

We had the private tour and wine tasting with Glaiza and it was a fantastic experience. You get to learn about this historical winery and try some of the best wines in the region. It was a great, leisurely experience we can recommend to anyone visiting the Barossa.
