An interesting hour and a half wandering around the mine site. It’s a massive site, with multiple lookouts for the open cut, plus the historic ruins or intact structures of engine houses and chimneys etc. I paid for the Heritage Passport key so was able to go into the locked area, which was well worth it. With the key you can also drive in and up to an additional lookout and another locked building: the oldest mining building in Australia.
This site is not particularly accessible, perhaps partly with an all-terrain wheelchair, but certainly not in the locked area which has stairs and a lot of uneven ground.

Visited as part of the heritage passport.
2 building of which you can enter once inside the site, however note the engine house is restricted currently due to a sink hole opening up so you can access all the buildings there.
Very interesting however you need to drive out of this site and over to the mine viewing platform to get a better view of the mine site.

In the mid-nineteenth century, Burra was at the center of South Australia’s economy, thanks to the mine.

The mining ended many years ago, but thankfully, reminders of the mine remain for the visitor to see and appreciate.

Depending on your agility and level of interest, the mine area lends itself to walking or self driven visitation. The mine area is quite extensive, so I suspect a combination of walking, then driving from one focal point to the next.

For the keen visitor, the Burra Passport would be a good investment (it’s available from the Visitor Center). This allows you to enter various sites within the extensive mine area, and examine buildings and structures at closer quarters.

A “must visit” if you are touring in this area.

What an unique experience it was to be able to explore a historical mine site on our own, Burra is a magical town full of wonderful history, buildings and people. To maximise our visit and time at the mine we purchased a Burra Heritage Passport at the Tourist Information Office in the centre of town, with the key that comes with the passport we had access to two of mining buildings, the impressive Morphett's Enginehouse and Powder Magazine. Walking around the site was easy, minimal shade, bring a hat and plenty of water as it can get very hot out in the open. I recommend driving up to the Town Lookout and Burra Lookout once finished walking around and discovering the other historical buildings, grave sites and taking in the open cut mine pool. All up we spent just under two hours on site.

We really enjoyed walking around the old Burra Copper Mine. There are interesting interpretive signs and the remaining buildings are being well preserved. The view of the lake with its forested edges is also worth the visit.

Burra was once an important mine, one of the most productive copper mines in Australia. When production stopped, the mine filled with water. It is now a beautiful turquoise colour. It's well worth taking the short trip to see the mine site. Many of the miners were 'Cousin Jacks,' as Cornish miners were called. Many South Australians are decended trom these hard-working men.

We took the KEY provided by Information at Burra. It is a wonderful thing to do in the mining town of Burra. The mines footprint ruins hold guys interest especially. The Museum information is great.
In fact it is perhaps the only thing to occupy you if you have a few days to spend there. It introduced us the character of place, and the nice community as we milled around, had lunch and stayed at the Caravan Park.

Wandered around and got a glimpse into Burra's previous life mining copper. Once was a booming mining town, the history of which has been retained by the local residents.

We were driving towards Burra North and saw the sign to the Mines, great stop off plenty to have a look at and great views. We even found little rocks with copper as a keepsake.
