Located in Xining square.Free admission just need to show your passport.2 floors of ancient artefacts including pottery, utensils and costumes.
Also in the square ( but not in the Lonely Planet) is the Qing Hai Art Museum which is 3 massive floors of paintings, photography and calligraphy.Well worth a visit, nothing is in English and admission is free.

This is a nice museum with displays relating to the region, history, local culture, industry etc. I enjoyed the cultural displays the most. Behind the museum there is a high end shopping area with restaurants & shops you might enjoy as well.

I really enjoyed the couple of hours I spent in this museum. Although this was my fifth visit to Xining, it was the first time I have been. There is a lot of material on display, much of it really very old. The displays are well done and there is an english translation for most of them, although not all. The museum appears to be operating without all the floors open but there is still a lot to look at. It is free to enter, you just need to show your passport. The Tibetan area is a little flat and heavily labelled as Mongolian; but in fact it is the really old artifacts that are the most interesting I thought. It was quite busy, but I was there during school holidays. Xining is not the most inviting city you will visit and it takes effort to find things of interest, but I found this museum worth the time.

The best thing about this museum was that we were the only people in it. The scanner to pay electronically was broken and when I produced cash, there was no change. The space itself has so much potential, a massive entrance hall and some creatively designed show rooms. But the hall was filled with a couple stuffed yaks; the kids sat on a live one later in the day. The show rooms displayed common insects like June bugs and ear wigs, and almost all of the settings were paper mache and did not use natural materials. Maybe if I could read Chinese, I could have gotten more out of the explanations of the geological history of the land, but I could still tell it was limited and almost all of the screen displays were powered off. A nice display of stuffed animals, but instead of a history museum, I would describe it as an update of what you can see today. No authentic prehistoric displays little to no mention of human interaction with the land.

It was free entry although you need to present your photo ID to get in. To get an overview of this city and how the city form, this is good place to start with. all the paintings, photography, calligraphy all look amazing. This is a good place to get good idea what's representing this city. but once is good enough to visit.

The museum is free before 5pm weekdays. You have to show your passport and they give you a ticket. We spent about 2 hours walking the exhibits. Many of the signs are in English and you get a good appreciation for the history of the region. This is a great museum for people interested in the history of the people of this region. Xining has immense historical importance as it was on the silk road and it has been settled for over 2100 years. Recommended for adults and kids over 10. There is a mall across the street with restaurants and shopping.

Came by today (25th August 2018), sat on a bus for a whole hour to get here from the other side of town when Baidu maps told me it would take 30min only to find that it's closed. I walked around to the back and found the museum gift shop was still open. Using Baidu translate, I asked her what the deal was and she said it won't be open until next year.

Few English explanations.
No map (in English, anyway).
Gives some sense of the archeological history of the region.
Once was enough

Nice museum. We were lucky we had a local translator /guide who told us the stories and cultural aspects behind the scenes. Otherwise it is hard to understand what you see. Thank you Betty.

Like Lonely Planet said, scaled down in size. Two rooms with some info on the different minorities in the province. Titles are in English, but the main info is in Chinese. The place is hidden away on Xining square because the front door leads to a mall. The front door had a broken down metal construction on the stairs. It appears it has been there for some time... a clear sign the local government is not putting much effort anymore in this museum. Definitely not worth a taxi, let alone an hour walk.
