The traveler really misses something if he doesn't visit this huge mansion, dream residence for many, creation of a super wealthy and sophisticated family. More "Mansion" than "Garden", Heyuan has a unique style that only in "film noirs" you can find. Architecture and exhibits work perfectly to create nostalgic feelings for a past era. Some of its top "hot spots"... More

The classic style of Chinese garden is definitely worth to visit. It is well preserved. I specially like the corridor of the second floor. This kind of design is seldom found in other Chinese gardens such as in Hangzhou or Suzhou. Also, since not so many tourist come here, I got an peaceful relaxing experience to enjoy the beauty of... Said to be one of the four best classical gardens in China, it os well worth spending a couple of hours. It is very busy so be prepared for crowds. Be sure not to miss the other gardens in Yangzhou: Slender West Lake (a huge park) and the Li Family mansions (with a fantastic restaurant) and the Ge garden, which... More

Interesting house belonging to a salt merchant. Had to look around myself, very little English. I followed a Chinese couple who appeared to have a guide who promptly delivered us to a restaurant with no English menu. I tried to order with the help of a young girl who had very limited English and ended up with what looked like... More

The only one we enjoyed, strongly recommended, better than Geyuan Garden! Also should try the pancake at entrance made by two friendly dumb ladies - yummy!

Maybe it was because I went early in the morning, but this was not very busy and I enjoyed it. The gardens were more interesting to me than the houses. The houses were just plain.

We hired a tour guide when we went through the gate after we saw how big the place was. . .and she was able to make our visit more meaningful. Home of a former government official, the official was exposed to a bit of western influence, and that can be seen in some of the rooms. Notice the garden floor,... More

Of Yangzhou's two famous garden estates, this was probably the less interesting one. In my opinion, though, they are too much alike for it to be worth it to see both. Heyuan, like its counterpart Geyuan, is overrun with tour groups and wedding parties, whose numbers and whose guides with loudspeakers destroy the intended tranquil ambiance of the Chinese garden.
