This show is a nice way to end your excursion to Tianmen mountain. Very well done light and sound effects. The English translations projected on the rock didn’t always make sense, so good thing our guide gave us a synopsis of the show.

One of the best shows in China. From the colorful background to beautiful music to actors, you will be marveled by the great performance.

This show is set in the natural landscape of the valley with Tianmen mountain in the background. The outdoor theatre is around a 20 minute drive from the town centre. The road is not that great. The theatre has 3 tiers of ticket pricing depending on seating position. We chose the middle price and was seated perfectly 5 rows from the front in the middle. The love story of 'a weedman and a fox fairy' is a Romeo and Juliet story. Even though it is all in Chinese there is a screen at the side that has English narration, this can be distracting though as you can't read the screen and watch the show. It was so spectacular, colorful and amazing you did not need a translation. It is a must see once in a lifetime experience.

April 2015 - During the cold and the rainy period of Zhangjiajie we watched the show from the twentieth row and boy did we like it. We came with low expectations because we originally needed to kill time but our guide recommended the show.
The show is about an old Chinese folktale about the "fox lady". A lady so mysterious and culturally advanced that she can transform from a white fox to a princess. A story about marriage and forbidden love. They have two huge rock walls where they project three types of subtitles. Two in Chinese, one in English and one in Zhangjiajies favorite tourist's language - Korean.
The English is as always broken but completely understandable. It can get funny sometimes when they have used a poor translation. Reading about the show on internet or asking your guide will definitely improve your experience.
Acting is a bit meh, the main characters voices are very good especially the narrator. A few really good songs and a few okay ones all in about one and a half hours. There were maybe some lip-syncing involved but I don't think you can expect less since it is outside. They had a very synced background choir who worked together with the narrator and a lot of actors on stage at the same time.
When we watched the show we were afraid that we would freeze to death because of the cold and the show being outside but they had a fix for that. You can rent old Chinese army jackets for 10 RMB with 100 RMB deposits. Very large and cozy so you can focus on the show instead of the cold.
To my experience people still came pouring in long after the show had started which could cause some annoyance. You should expect to be blinded a couple of times by iPhone lamps from people trying to find their seats.
To summarize: Good show perfect for killing time. Average acting but with beautiful scenery. Worth the money.

Not boring, it is the outdoor show, so you should prepare coat well if you go in the winter...
The show is worth for money, the background of show are the mountain which made us feel impressive..the show offers the English subtitle, so there are many traveller to watch it...
It started around 7.30- 9.30 p.m.. We let hotel booked the ticket for us...the show is not far from the city, but the road to there is quite dark..if anyone takes taxi there, you should ask driver to come back to pick you back..cos it's location is isolate...btw, Great show...good story..nice dressing and music.

The production is amazing and the music is great but a couple of things kept me from giving it a higher score. There were English subtitles for all the lyrics in the songs but they were off to the side and in much smaller type than the Chinese and Korean subtitles. I could not read them from where we sat so I wasn't sure what was going on most of the time. The stage is impressive and really huge but it was also a long way from the audience. Considering there wee only two main characters and a narrator, it all felt very distant. A great spectacle for sure, but I did not enjoy it and don't recommend it.

I didn't think this would be a highlight, but I was surprised. The storyline isn't anything to write home about -- but the staging and music is first class. I'd go again. The setting is outdoor and very expansive -- hordes of actors. (There is a lot of lip-sync.)

China's gotten pretty good at putting together these kind of shows - beyond the usual cultural (ladies gliding around stage flapping extremely long sleeves), acrobatic (girls on bicycles balancing plates) and martial art (breaking concrete slabs on chest) stuff. Have seen a number of them (Westlake, Yunnan etc) and felt they were money well spent.
All in all, this one's a great show - beautiful costumes, great light effects, realistically built rustic sets, beautifully sang - clear, pristine voices, a decent story , nice water/flying effects - set against the backdrop of mountains.... highly entertaining

My family were on a tour and saw this show on 24 September 2014. This was my first time seeing an outdoor show like this and I was blown away by the set itself!! The music, the singing, the dancing were all wonderful. There were subtitles projected on rocks. Unfortunately, the English subtitles were on the rock underneath the choir and I was sitting a little more to the right side. The costumes were amazing!! This show is definitely a must see!!!
If you speak the language, you can sit anywhere really. I think I would have preferred sitting a little higher and away from the stage (to see the entire stage better) and a little closer to the where the English subtitles were being projected. I had to keep turning my head to the left to read the subtitles and I felt like I kept missing the show.

Is there the show perform on that day?

It’s in midst of winter. As it’s an outdoor night venue, temperature will drop to Low single digit. Too cold and icy for performers and audience. Show opens again in March/April 2020
