Layered clothing with a warm jacket is definitely a must. Recommended to take the Tianmen Mountain Cable Car, which is reputed to be the longest cable car ride in the world with a 7,455 metres length, and the ride is about 28 minutes. There's so much to see in Tianmen Mountain, like the Cliffside Glass Path, Tianmen Cave / Tianmen Hole, etc.Visited March 2024Traveled with friendsWritten March 25, 2024
- Viset88 contributionsWow place to visit but needs lots of patienceI am impressed with the nature and scenery. There are pros and cons though. Pros: amazing scenery and wonderful nature. The Management did an excellent job in managing the crowd and traffics. There are a lot of staffs to make sure you are safe. Cons: Loads of people visit there. You need to queue up for 2 hours to get through. So, I don't think it is a good idea for family with kids or elderly. Most toilets are squat so after all the walking and standing 2 hours , it is challenging! Note: you need to be a bit fit.Visited April 2024Traveled with friendsWritten April 13, 2024
- Peng Boon TSingapore, Singapore2,482 contributionsA beautiful and enchanting placeFirst, we took the 7746 m cable car to reach Tianmen (Heaven’s Gate) Mt, the starting point of our long walk to the cave at the Tianmen (Heaven’s Gate). Along the way, we walked along the edges of cliffs, with sheer drop to abyss on one side, made more enchanting by light fog. We also walked through the Glass Plank Walkway where we had to put on shoe covers before entering. We walked about 50 minutes before reaching a rest area where there were benches, food and drinks. We went down many long escalators before reaching Tianmen. At the Tianmen, we saw a big hole through the mountain. We had to go down many more long escalators before reaching the lower level to view Tianmen. Tianmen viewed from below was more impressive than when we were actually there. After this, we had to go down many more long escalators, and walking along cliffs before reaching another cable car station which brought us down to the place where we watched Tianmen Fox Fairy Show the previous night. See my many photos.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 6, 2024

Just to spend a sunday i travelled from guanzhou to zhangjaji without much of an expectation .. but the experience was mind blowing .. it is a natural wonder with master engineering works of chines nationals.. spectacular trip . I think most of the international tourists are not aware of this wonderful place . Bcs only very few visitors other than chinees nationals and koreans can be seen in this place.. I gave 5 star for this place and this is must visit place in the world.. Hats of to china and master minds behind this well planned tourismVisited June 2024Traveled soloWritten June 23, 2024
- ShannonSuva, Fiji1,161 contributionsBucket List! There are two main tickets lines A & C, Line A takes you directly from the Cable way station in Zhangjiajie to the top of the mountain (And return), for Line C (which we had taken) you first take a Bus shuttle from the downtown Cable way station which takes you to the base of Tianmenshan and its from there you take the cable cart up to the base of Heavens Door, you then need to walk up the stairway or pay extra for the elevator up to the cave opening than take further 5 sets of escalators to reach the very top of the mountain. If you're on a tight schedule, don't intend to walk much or traveling with elderly, I highly recommend buying Line A tickets. But unlike Line C you don't get to see Heavens Door unless you personally make yourself down from the top. We also tried waiting for the light show but we didn't do enough research regarding this to our knowledge the lights turn on after 7-7.30pm but the park closes before and we waited till 6.30pm. Lots of restaurants at the top and all prices decently, the great thing was that it can be fully completed in 6 hours by longer route Line C. Highly recommended.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 22, 2024

It was misty on top but I didn’t mind as it was a different vibe (in a good way). Interesting to be standing under the huge hole, and walking down the 999 steps was rather interesting.Visited September 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 29, 2024

Access via 2 cable cars from the city center. Line A takes you directly to the top, but at 9 in the morning it is already "sold out". Otherwise, a shuttle bus takes you to the C station which leaves you at the foot of the Tianmen Dong, the natural fissure on the side of the mountain, reachable by climbing a staircase of 999 steps (a suggestive and tiring climb), or by using escalators, which are still necessary to reach the top. The circular paths along the plateau are suggestive, especially the glass ones on the sides. The weather conditions are not excellent, but at the cost of some temporary showers of water, the landscape with the peaks cloaked in clouds has its own reason.

2nd place in the region.
Our hotel also booked the tickets for us. I think we paid 278 per person. We wanted to go up by bus and down by cable car. There is a luggage storage facility on the square where the buses and cable cars run.
Our tickets to the park were for entry from 12:00 p.m. - and we were worried that we would have to wait another 2 hours in the city. We tried our luck and were let in at 10:00 a.m. and were able to take the bus to the cable car. The bus actually goes to the Gates of Heaven, but because of construction work we had to take the cable car for the last part. Before you get to the cable car you walk past a grandstand and a few houses on which animated giant cats sit.
After the cable car ride you come directly to a square from where the stairs to the Gates of Heaven begin. Due to the temperatures, we decided to take the escalator (lower escalator) and then wanted to take the next escalator (upper escalator) to the summit and explore the park and then go down the stairs. However, we didn't consider that after the circular route at the top of the summit, we wouldn't be able to get back to the stairs. No matter, we saw the Gate of Heaven. You have to pay extra for the tickets for the lower escalator (several escalators to be precise - about 5) to the plateau of the Gate of Heaven - about 30 yuan per person. From the plateau, we took the escalators (upper escalator) - 7 of them - to the summit. These escalators are included in the ticket price.
Once you reach the summit, you can take the west route (2 hours), east route (3 hours) or the complete circular route (5-6 hours). We needed half the time for the circular route - despite photo stops, smoking breaks, etc. For 5 yuan each, you can also take a short glass plank path on both routes. I couldn't recommend either route, as both routes are very similar and the views are very comparable. In any case, it is spectacular to go around the mountain at this height (approx. 1500m) - the West Route also has a suspension bridge. Both routes take you to a temple. If you want, you can take the chair lift to another temple, but we skipped that because a) I'm not suited to such heights and b) the temple was a construction site.
In the afternoon we took the cable car into town. We waited about 20 minutes until the barrier to the cable car was opened - after that you come back to a waiting room and have to wait another half an eternity. You should definitely plan enough time for the trip into town and take into account that the cable car also takes another 30 minutes.
All in all, a lovely trip with great views and the unique Gate of Heaven - 2nd place in the region.

This was a lovely area and just beautiful. I was worried about the glass bridges but they are so scratched that you really can't see much through them so they are not scary at all unless you want to lean over the railings and as they are just bolted onto the side of the mountain, that can be scary! The view from them was fantastic. There are a couple of paid photo opportunities where you get a photo in a bit of souvenir cardboard. Use the elevators where possible to get down as rthere are plenty of steps, we chose both.

Second to the Avatar mountains this is the other “must” see on your visit. We took the cable car from the city to the top of the mountain (7.5 km long!!) which gives you beautiful views of the mountain. On the top it was cloudy so we walk around the full top of the mountain and on the western side it opened up so you could enjoy the view and the massive drop below your feet. Do take the glass walkway if you are not scared of heights. It is impressive. The actual cave (or rather hole) is amazing. I suggest first going to the bottom of the 999 steps and the walking up - you really feel the awe of the place.

We arrived at the cable car station at about 9:30 and waited until about 10am to get on the cable car. We didn’t realise there were different tickets available for routes going up and down (only realised this when coming down). We got to the top after a 30 minute cable car ride and walked on the east line. I would suggest walking the west route so that you can do the glass walkway on the west side. The weather got progressively worse abs by the end of our route we could hardly see a thing. The views first thing were amazing and the glass walkways were brilliant. Not much options for food going around so take snacks. When we got back to the top of the cable car they told us we didn’t have the right ticket and needed to go to the tainted cave and go down that way. We didn’t want to do this as we had seen the cave and were tired and wet by this point. They finally allowed us back down the cable car but it took some effort. My suggestion-walk west route and finish by going down to the cave.

Thoroughly enjoyed climbing the steps to the gate, we got there around 09:00, was relatively quiet, and the light was coming through the gate just right as we were ascending the steps. If you don’t want to climb the staircase, there are escalators available.
The plateau above is great to walk around and takes approximately 3 hours to get round, and include a visit to the temple complex.
Please note the cable car from town is not currently operational, we were advised repairs were ongoing into next year. But replacement buses are available.

What a marvellous piece of nature this is.
We went there twice. On our first visit, we took line A and explored the national park all the way to the temple. Tianmen temple may be a long walk, but it's certainly a beautiful one, and the temple itself is so peaceful.
The glass bridges are all paid individually. On our way down, we took the escalators through the mountain. Oh boy! that was some great engineering!
Unfortunately, the weather that day was too bad. We couldn't see the cave at all due to the mist and heavy rain, so we had to rush ourselves out.
On our second visit, we took line B, the skies were clear and we got the cable car to ourselves. We saw the cave, the stairway and also stayed back for the light show. It was totally worth it!

Our tour guide bought the tickets for cable car and escalators. The waiting area has a big and lovely sandstone painting.
It was raining and misty when we reached part of the top, but we were lucky to see the sights of the foggy mountain like a chinese painting. We took the cable car, escalators, went through the cave, walked on the glass walkways and pass by the charming scenery of the forest. There are a few stalls selling food and drinks. Once we arrived at the base, we can see the famous arch of Heaven's Gate but was not clear due to the rain and fog.
We came out to the other entrance where the venue of the Tianmen Fox Fairy Show is and we went that very night.

An amazing half-day trip to see the giant 'hole in rock'. Includes an exciting cable car ride up and down with stunning views. A walk around forests at the top, with more stunning outlooks. The longest downhill escalator i've ever travelled on. Views of the hole in rock and adjacent lake up close. Finally, 1,000 steps (or a lift) back down to the cable car for the ride back to base. Well worth the trip. Please note, cable car queues up can be long (an hour for us). To see everything at the top, a tour guide is useful, otherwise it may get a bit confusing.

Hi, is it possible to take the cable car both up and down? I’d probably get sick if I take that bus down. Thanks!
Written October 23, 2019
We are just back from a 10 days trip to Very Beautiful Hokkaido. Yes, you could take the return via a cable car from Tianmen Mountain - but you probably need to take a reverse route / back track to get back to the cable car station. Remember, the cable car station is not here, but the other side of the mountain. Book your tickets in advance from the starting point. It may be troublesome & very tiring to backtrack, if you already walk the 999 steps down Tianmen Mountain, now its another 999 steps up the very steep mountain, unless again, you booked the lifts & rides all at the same time. We in our 60's could not manage these climbs, let alone some members in the late 70's. But to take in the views, stopping for photography, up close with the waterfalls & the faces of the tourist who managed these challenging climbs, the tendency of tiredness were all forgotten., when victory of achievement of some sort - to reaching the top of the climb. Enjoy but remember check very carefully & book in advance.

I will be visiting Tianmen mountain during morning time - taking the cable car up and escalator down. Which loop on the top do you recommend doing first: EAST or WEST? What's the difference - Is one more scenic than the other?

Where does the day tour start from? How long does it take?
Written April 20, 2019
We took the cable car up ,about 30 minutes once you get into the car. As for how long does it take to walk around depends on the crowds. Use the escalator both ways. Save your knees, going up the stairs is a two edged sword.

How easy is it to get a taxi here and back
Written April 12, 2019
Try to go with a group. As this is a very popular tourist attraction, a taxi might prove expensive . People charge more when they know you have limited to no choice.
