Come at night, when the food stalls are around
Nov 2019
During daytime, it is just another of those endless traditional Chinese buildings, Comes night, it is lively, colorful and looks very authentic, The lighting is also nice.

Lifely nightmarket / expensive food
Apr 2019 • Couples
Lifely active nightmarket , crowded, loud and messy yet interesting and tempting. I found the food to be very expensive for so called street food yet there can be good quality found. Seems for me that on the side with the night market (selling goods) there are mainly muslim vendors with different offers of food. Overall worth a visit at least once to klick some nice pics and sample some food.

Time for munchies it's after 18:00
Jun 2018 • Couples
This is not so much a square as an oval with the drum tower in the middle and food vendors all around. Whatever you want will be here somewhere, so with the usual proviso of checking for how the food is prepared, cooked and served, plus the age of the cooking oil, tuck in and get fat.

Unusually for this kind of place they actual have outdoors seating. Different vendors kind of get territorial if you just seat down. Understandable it is their livelihood.

The major food area concentrates on one side. On the other is the start of the 'book sellers street', which runs for some 600 metres. Behind the night street vendors the original shops do have a significant number of book and art type shops. Some will be open other not. Don't miss the sweet chestnut shop / seller.

Most of the night vendors in the street are not for food, but it makes and interesting walk to the end and back.

The Famous Night Market
Oct 2017 • Solo
At sunset, a vast number of street vendors appear selling a wide variety of foods and goods. It's a delight for nibbling and photographing people. Yes, it's crowded, but everyone is having a good time. I spent several hours here, grazing, watching the vendors and people, and enjoying the spectacle. It's a treat not to be missed.

The street to the north has the goods vendors. Barbie dolls seemed to be a favorite.

Cool place to eat something at night
Nov 2016 • Solo
Around the Drum Tower the square changes with nightfall. Dozens of small stalls are being positioned and prepared for the visitors. These stalls have many different kinds of food for you. From fresh made dumplings to chicken saté and some more unusual kind of food

Bit of a scrum
Oct 2017 • Solo
This is the place to be at night, but the crowds may well put you off. It's simply heaving with people, even on weeknights and even in the pouring rain. Surrounding the beautifully lit Drum Tower (which is a very new building) the streets are packed with street food vendors. The truth is, although there hundreds of them, they are all more-or-less offering the same food at the same prices. Probably there's only about 4 or 5 different food options available. That's not counting KFC and McDonalds which have also moved in. The right of the Tower seems to be the busiest side and the left has a market as well as food stalls. Great atmosphere and great fun, although the food is surprisingly expensive and not all that great quality.

A must at night
Sep 2017 • Couples
Discovered it by accident. Beautiful and magic atmosphere at night. There is a night market around this area, with lots of food (meat, fish, vegetarian, sweets). It´s a feast for your eyes! Also nice to buy souvenirs, as it is not so touristic.

Lively with plenty of food options
Jan 2017 • Friends
The tower is lit up beautifully at night. There is a street market that offers everything from clothes to stationary to iPhone accessories. This extends quite away from the tower.

The main attraction is the night food market. I reckon there is over 100 stalls, all of whom appear to be licenced. There's plenty of variety, but there's at least 3 of each offering. Food on sticks, fried oysters, stinky Tofu, fried lamb pancakes, baozi, fish, chicken. Some of it is daunting, but even for the unadventurous there's "accessible" options. In winter they are open to 11 and in summer apparently until 2am. This is how the locals eat, but the stall holders were very friendly to us and enjoyed my consumption of the stinky tofu.

You can eat whilst walking or you sit down at any number of tables. You can also buy beers for 8RMB. Most dishes I had were 10RMB.

Great fun and a real experience.

A lot more stalls and street vendors at night, although many with the same product. Colourful and worth the visit.
