Being from Myrtle Beach, we wanted a place to avoid crowds. [See my review of Wilson Lake]. Ibam also a bridge photographer, so I love to find different styles all over the USA.
This trail started at the Tar River Bridge. We were able to get pictures above and below it. Along the trail there were places to climb down, see the river and other spots to rest and be out of the sun. It was 80° when we went and it was just a beautiful 3 mile hike for myself, my husband, 14 year old daughter and 6 year old shepherd lab mix dog, Justice.
As we walked further along the trail, we ended up in Battle Park which was also beautiful. The waterfall dam, the view from the gazebo and the multiple bridges along the way. We found one area that had graffiti, but that's not uncommon for people to deface beauty. Other than that, we can't wait to come Back!

It's a great walk! The trail is 3.12 miles long. It goes along the Tar River just a short walk from Sunset Lake Park (River Road and Business 64). Along the way you will pass through Battle Park and ends at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park. There is a nice color map you can download from the Rocky Mount city website by searching for the Tar River Trail.

I stayed overnight in Rocky Mount at the Candlewood Suites (an excellent hotel) and in the morning found this amazing trail which meanders along the Tar River. I am acclimated to Florida and don't get many hills there so this was a running challenge. I ran 1.5 miles out from Sunset Park and back. I passed a couple of deer watching me run. Lots of birds singing in the trees. The river was flowing and the sunrise was beautiful. This is a great place to run if you live here or are just passing through.

This is a great trail to run. There is much to see from the river to the bridges you cross or go under to the parks to visit. While the trail itself is great, the maps and directions online and in the park aren't very easy to find. I started at Sunset Park where I had read online was a good place to get started. It was not readily identifiable where the trail was. You have to drive to the back of the park and look for the "Emergency Access Trail" sign (not sure why it is an emergency). The other parks I ran through seemed like they'd be easier to locate the trail. The colored line painted on the paved trail to mark each section is faded and at times missing. There is one junction where the trail splits coming from Sunset Park and no indication as to which way to go. It is natural to take the trail that stays along the river but a sign would be nice. The wooden bridge and the metal bridge are certainly slippery when wet or frost (like this morning) so I got on the sidewalk to avoid the slick metal bridge.

Want a bike or foot trail along the river and thru the woods, then the Rocky Mount Tar River Trail is for you. Start on the west end at City Lake or beyond the MLK statue on the east and follow the paved path thru the various wooded city parks, past the Falls of the Tar, and to either end. An easy ~3 mile bike ride, just right to calm your frustrations and generate a chilled attitude in order to get you thru the remainder of the day.

I love the trail and how close it is to the Rocky Mount Mills. It meanders in two different directions from the Mills which has parking and places to eat and drink after a trail excursion. The trail is mostly asphalt paving (a few tree root bumps). I've never felt unsafe especially now that lower tree branches have been trimmed to make it more open feeling. It would be a perfect stop for those traveling I-95 to get out and stretch their legs a bit. (Exit138 take Hwy 64 East to Exit 468B)

Start off at City Lake Park, following the river come up to The Mill, cross the street and enter Battle Park, wind thru pine forest and see the falls of the Tar, continue on over the river and into BBQ Park, and then stroll on to MLK Park. Paved trail has a few worn spots and tree root damage, but overall great trek.

As a Rocky Mount native, one of my favorite places is the Tar River Trail. It snakes through the entire city and offers miles of trail for exercising, such as walking, running and bike riding. The abundance of trees offers lots of shaded areas and residents get fantastic views of the river and many scenic parks like Sunset and MLK.

Great trail along the river. About 7 miles from start to finish, with Rocky Mount Mills in the middle. Good for a pitstop!
great for running or family cycle without traffic. Very well maintained by the City of Rocky Mount. Thank you.
