Our only regret our recent excursion with Fox Mountain Guides was that we'd only booked a 1/2 day of climbing in a beginner course. My teenage son climbs regularly at a gym but I am a relative novice. Our guide Doug was personable, efficient, clearly knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. My wife and young daughter accompanied us on the hike to Looking Glass Rock and he was just as engaging with them as he was with his climbers. He just obviously loves his work and introducing it to his clients. The rock face was slippery from recent rain but that did not matter. With his instruction on safety measures and demonstrated techniques we both made multiple ascents with the wet rock just adding to the excitement of the challenge.

In a display of the real community that obviously exists among climbers, Doug even assisted a couple who were there to climb on their own by ascending with some gear to get them set up. I know they were not there expecting help from anyone but were obviously happy he was there and glad to get his offer of help.

We will definitely go again and I cannot recommend Fox Mountain Guides and Doug enough.

Let’s start from the bottom.... the base that is. What a great, fun family experience this was. Our professional guide and Sherpa Doug met us early. We took a short drive followed by a quick hike to the base of our rock. We were provided with all the gear we needed and a Saftey brief that put every one at ease. When we looked up at the rock face immediately the “I can’t do that” started but Doug shut that down quickly. We could not have had a better motivational, inspirational and confidence building voice encouraging us to literally harness our inner strength and climb! Full disclaimer....my wife is terrified of heights and she was very upset with the thought of doing this. Please see the attached photos as she had the best time of all of us! Doug put all her fears to rest and talked her from the bottom to the top. We were stunned!!!!!
My two teenage girls both made the climb to the top on both courses. They were the ones saying “I can’t do that”. It made a dad proud to see them off their phones and challenging themselves to try something new.
My young son all of 11 struggle a bit. There was Doug once again directing him how to lean, hold and place his feet. He climbed until he felt comfortable with the height and came down. Absolutely no pressure was put on him to go higher. He felt like king of the world 1/4 of the way up!
At the end of day we had a great time. It’s a beautiful outdoor area. I would highly recommend if your looking for a fun full day or half day of climbing this Is for you. Thank you Doug for your leadership, friendly spirit and passion for rock climbing! Hope to see you again soon. Take care sir.

We gave our guide, Doug, the mission to give us Floridians maximum amount of rock coverage in a single day. After assessing our climbing ability (us Florida rock gym rats), he gave us the confidence to do The Nose, the most iconic route on Looking Glass. After rappelling down from the top, we climbed all 4 pitches back to the top, stopping for lunch on this big somewhat flat slab called "The Parking Lot" with the greatest view we've ever seen. Not only did we meet a great guide that day, but we also met a new rock climbing friend who we text before every climbing adventure in the smokies. He gave us the confidence to exist high on the mountain exposed to the wind and remain calm, relaxed, and enjoy the climb.

This was my wife's first time climbing outdoors as well as mine. I can tell you it won't be our last! We had a blast and our guide, Doug, was great! We were laughing all day long! He was very professional when he needed to be and was exceptional with his coaching and climbing tips making our climbs even better. The scenery was amazing and weather was outstanding for this time of year. We will definitely be suggesting to go with Doug for all future climbs! Would highly recommend him!

For future climbers I would recommend going during the week! We went on a Monday and in February they are slower anyway due to the cold but it wasn't crowded at all and we were able to do all the climbs we wanted to do.

Also, I would suggest doing the full day! Even if you are not an experienced climber you can enjoy the scenery and you won't run into issues with not getting to climb the better runs if it is busy. We were able to get all our climbs in and we took plenty of rest breaks throughout the entire day. It also gives your guide plenty of time to set up all the climbs with no rush. Bring plenty of snacks and water and it will be a blast!

We had an awesome morning with Ben Wu. We had five climbers under the age of 19 with varied climbing experience and Ben nailed it. He had us arrive an hour early to beat the rain and had the sites set up in the blink of an eye. I think he managed to reach each of the teenagers and taught each one about climbing instead of just having them just do it - as any good Outward Bounder would do. Can't wait to try Ice Climbing with him up in NH closer to home. Thanks!!!

Great climb with Petey Guillard! My husband and I had never climbed outdoors before. We had been to the rock gym a few times and wanted to see what outdoor climbing was all about. Petey took us to looking glass, and we had so much fun we booked him for a second climb later in the week at rumbling bald. Can’t recommend FMG and Petey highly enough. Petey was patient with us, kept everything safe, and most impressively, he was able to pick climbs that were just the right level of challenging for both myself and my husband (who have very different strengths and climbing styles). We usually take a trip to WNC at least once a year, and I can’t imagine making the trip again without booking a climb with Petey! Also, he took all the great pics uploaded to this review ;)

I'm from Brazil and I traveled to North Carolina for work. I had one day off so I booked a guided climb with Fox Mountain Guides as I found the website and was really interested in climbing The Nose on the Looking Glass Rock. All the communication by e-mail was really good - I had questions about the weather and clothes and I received the replies with valuable information very quickly. I booked online and soon received confirmation and was put in touch with my guide, Doug Lutz. Doug reached out to me and we spoke on the phone three days before the trip, which was great to get clarifications and get all set. We exchanged e-mails about the meeting point and everything was very easy and very professional! Doug was the greatest guide as he talked me through the agenda for the day with clear instructions and awesome energy! It was a freezing day, but we faced the challenge. We hiked up the Looking Glass Rock and rappelled down to climb a pitch. Doug made me feel very safe the entire way and also helped me feel confident that I could do it. I'm very thankful and so happy about this day! I'm looking forward to coming back to climb more routes with Doug!

We had an excellent time climbing at Looking Glass in Pisgah National Forest with Doug. We booked a full day beginner’s excursion, although we’ve been climbing outside once before and climb regularly at the gym. We are not the strongest climbers but that didn’t matter at all! Doug was friendly, funny, helpful, and uplifting (literally). There happened to be no one else climbing on the day that we went and we had absolutely perfect weather. Couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful time. We learned a lot of helpful tips and tricks from Doug that we will definitely use going forward. We’ll definitely be back, only next time we’ll check out the multi-pitch climbing!

I have now taken the 101 and the 201 classes with Fox Mountain. Both were amazing. Doug and Petey are both fantastic teachers. Calm, cool, and patient, they teach from a place of experience and love for their sport. They provide an environment of safety and comfort where you feel free to ask any questions. I highly recommend Fox Mountain if you are a beginner or someone looking to get out and learn the local spots.

Fox is such a professional outfit. I've used them several times, both for family and solo outings, and every experience has been nothing less than ideal. And Doug Lutz is the best. Cheery, patient, and engaged, his first priority is safety and education, but he's also a great motivator. Every time I climb with him, I come away feeling accomplished as well as surprised at both (a) how many pitches we were able to fit in and (b) the grades I was able to climb at. I couldn't recommend him more highly.
