About
This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president. The state historic site commemorates significant events in the Polk administration: the Mexican-American War, settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California. Reconstructions of typical homestead buildings—a log house, separate kitchen, and barn—are authentically furnished. The visitor center features a film on Polk's life and exhibits on his family and tumultuous presidency.

We learned a great deal about President Polk and didn't realize all the things he accomplished during his administration. Watch the short film first, explore the museum and join a self-guided or guided tours available. Not orginal structures but nicely maintained buildings and grounds. Couple times a year they have cooking demonstrations. Check website for limited days and times for the guided tours. We recommend guided tour for $2.00. Many cars in the parking lot with bikes so obviously a popular bike trail here.

Interesting site for American history fans. The museum is small but informative. It has information about President Polk, and also about the culture of the early Scotch-Irish settlers that migrated to the area. The park staff was very friendly and very well informed about the history and culture of the time. There is a tour of the replica cottage available, and it was very well done. There are also biking and hiking trails.

This is a little historical place near Charlotte. The state park is free and the guided tour was $2. Jeff the tour guide kept a good pace and shared good information. Check it out if you have an hour or two .

Site has a nice little museum which is free to enter that highlights the area and Polk’s presidency. A brief film can be viewed. A modest fee ($2) got you a tour (offered twice daily as of my visit) of the main house and kitchen first floor levels. The buildings are reconstructions from other period appropriate structures but are still educational as to how people lived in that age. Site also includes a small shaded picnic area (behind the welcome center in the tree line) and a family cemetery (far end of the parking lot).

What a nice little place to visit. The museum is very insightful about Polk's life and his presidency. The reconstructed buildings were really neat and walking about the grounds (which aren't very big) and reading the signs was very interesting. There's a bike/hiking trail that runs beside it so it could be a stopping place for those folks.

Worth a visit!! I was surprised to see so many cars in the parking lot, I had no idea there were so many fans of American history. Alas, it seems that many were just there to run or bike on the property. I looked at the museum exhibit, took the tour of the buildings, watched the film. All interesting giving nice context to the part of American history in which President James K Polk lived and served. Definitely recommend.

I never knew this existed in Pineville, NC or I would have visited years ago! This is a great park built on the land of the Polk family home place. It also provides a great path for walking or biking. They have nice building with a museum, info and a small gift store. There’s a garden and a couple of old log buildings to demonstrate what the home would have looked like. All of this was just for a donation. I think that’s a great deal that you can enjoy.

Disappointed that this site wasn't open when I visited the Charlotte area on a Sunday and Monday recently. I really enjoy presidential history and was looking forward to a visit here. Rating a 5 on what I had hoped to see.

We went here to stretch our legs and enjoy the warmish day. Didn’t plan to go inside but nature called and was pleasantly surprised by the small but well done museum inside. Lots of interesting details on a president that I knew very little about. The grounds are small but nice, buildings were locked up so didn’t get to see them. Definitely recommend for a little bit of history and outdoor time.

I love this place. It is a small museum, situated on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk, the 11th U.S. president. Self-guided tour is available in the main building, then a guide will take you to a reconstructed main building & the kitchen. The museum is so close to Carolina Place Mall, that it would be a shame not to visit it while in the area for shopping or dining.
