I was looking for a course that would teach me how to operate a large, trawler style, power boat and am delighted to have found Captain Jim Nixon at Oriental's School of Sailing. Capt. Jim was very patient and helpful as we practiced bringing this 40 foot boat into a variety of boat slips and docks as well as running and anchoring out on the sound. At the end of our time I felt very confident in my ability to handle a large boat in tight spaces. As a bonus, Jim added his personal boating experiences and really helped us understand what we were looking for in our boating future. My wife and I stayed aboard the boat for 3 nights and had a delightful time at the dock that the school uses. Jim is an excellent instructor who I would recommend highly to anyone wishing to learn sailing or powerboating an a beautiful setting on the Pamlico Sound.

My Husband took the week long sailing course from Will.
He had a great experience.
Only 3 people taking the basic course.
Will has a good knowledge of sailing.
My Husband said that he learned a lot, and now feels comfortable sailing that sailboat that we bought and are fixing up.
The weather (wind) was strong and the water had white caps 1 day, so they stayed in the dock and did drills on the sailboat.
My Husband said that this course with Will is definitely worth the money.

An excellent experience for this total beginner. Jim and Gordon, our instructors, were everything you could hope for -- knowledgeable, experienced, and friendly. You'll have a great time! The other students in my class were fun, too.

A great experience. Jim Nixon does his best to take very raw material and turn it into competent (relatively) sailors. The week was fun, challenging, enlightening, broadening.

Our sailing group chartered two boats from Oriental School of Sailing this past weekend. Setting up the charter was easily done through email and the flexibility the school provided due to weather was greatly appreciated. When we arrived we were greeted by Jim Nixon. He had all paperwork and supplies laid out for each of the boats and captains. His organization for this event was outstanding and made our check-in process quick, comprehensive, and pleasant. The boats were in excellent working order and we had no issues with either of the boats the entire day. Jim was very personable and offered help with any questions or concerns right away. We will definitely be chartering from them again!

I am in the process of buying a boat and thought it would be a good idea to learn how to sail safely. I had spent years flying, so sailing lessons seems to be the obvious route to take. Jim Nixon who teaches the course combined years of experience with a patient and clear approach to teaching the art of sailing. The course covered all the bases and provided the practical hands on experience that allows the student to acquire confidence as well as the necessary class room knowledge. The class size is small with only four students max. This guarantees each student gets the individual attention they need. Another benefit of this program is the comradery of your fellow students and the ability to enjoy their company after hours. So, if you want to learn to sail and have fun while you're at it, sign up with Jim at the Oriental School of Sailing.

My 11-year old son and I rented a C&C 24' sailboat for the day from Oriental School of Sailing (they have several boats available to charter). Chris Daniels, the owner, met us early, and he couldn't have been nicer, he had the boat all prepped and ready to go. As this boat is used for sailing instruction, it was understandably not luxurious, but that was not problem for us. The boat was easy to sail, and the area around Oriental is simple to sail in as well (wide open, few rocks, mostly sandy bottom). Also, the charter was not too pricey, I'd recommend it for sure. It was a fantastic day, we'll be back with my other children in the spring.

My husband and I have sailed Hobie Cats for years but not keelboats, and decided to learn. We just completed the USSA Basic Keelboat Training with Oriental School of Sailing and I highly recommend the course.

The instructors were very professional and patient with eager but slightly daunted students. Class size was great - four students plus an instructor on each boat. Most of the class time was spent on the water, gaining experience and understanding of the topics we learned in the morning class. The students did 100% of the boat operations, with verbal guidance from the instructors. Even those in the class with no experience were all sailing with confidence by the end of the class.
