Description:

Colonial Governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered and George...

Colonial Governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered and George Washington danced. At Tryon Palace, where British rule once flourished, American independence took root and the state of North Carolina was born. Here you can still experience the adventure of North Carolina’s earliest beginnings and a living history like no other. Guided tours, live re-enactments and conversations with costumed interpreters from centuries past bring history to life in vivid detail at the Governor’s Palace, Gardens and Historic Homes. And, at the new high-tech North Carolina History Center, interactive games and hands-on exhibits delight visitors young and old. Whether you’re exploring one of our riverside gardens or sharpening your skills as a quilter, printer, ship’s captain or blacksmith, there are endless opportunities for making cherished family memories at Tryon Palace.

History not to be outdone by a little fire! The community has done a superb job at keeping this place open to the public and the entire town of New Bern welcomes you with the fabulous spirit of our forefathers.

I had some free time while in town and headed over here based on a recommendation from the hotel staff. I had visited Tryon Palace before but had never been to the History Center. It was a quiet week day and I was able to spend a lot of time with the staff member at the front desk. She had... More

The guides were extremely knowledgable not only at the palace but also at the museum and the home tours. The gardens would be beautiful during the spring, summer or fall. We were there in January so they were quiet bleak. The palace was as amazing as the story of it being rebuilt.

Great, little known tour of the wardrobe & costume shop at Tryon Palace. Curator displays & teaches how the period clothes are made on site. Fascinating & fun facts divulged about period clothing & wardrobes for residents & servants alike during the hey day of the governor's palace. If you get the opportunity DO IT!!! You won't be sorry.

We were overwhelmed at how beautiful the home and gardens are! The tour guide was excellent. We learned much about the area and the time period when the house was built. If you go, be sure to buy the package that includes the surrounding homes. Guests are taxied around on gold carts, so children and elderly people can easily visit.... More

Took my grandchildren to check out the History Center. Awesome free video about New Bern and the Palace. The Gift Shop has a lot of unusual items as well as candy. If the kids are into Pokemon, they will find a ton of them outside near the boardwalk!

If you love history, you will definitely enjoy and should not miss this tour. While the mansion is not the original, it was rebuilt after a fire on the same foundation. Accurate inventory records were kept and the rooms were refurnished in true period furniture and accessories. The mansion is beautiful and since we were there right before the holidays,... More
