Colonial Governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered and George...

Colonial Governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered and George Washington danced. At Tryon Palace, where British rule once flourished, American independence took root and the state of North Carolina was born. Here you can still experience the adventure of North Carolina’s earliest beginnings and a living history like no other. Guided tours, live re-enactments and conversations with costumed interpreters from centuries past bring history to life in vivid detail at the Governor’s Palace, Gardens and Historic Homes. And, at the new high-tech North Carolina History Center, interactive games and hands-on exhibits delight visitors young and old. Whether you’re exploring one of our riverside gardens or sharpening your skills as a quilter, printer, ship’s captain or blacksmith, there are endless opportunities for making cherished family memories at Tryon Palace.

Great stuff for the history buff. Very interesting.

Very nice and low key. You don't feel rushed and the volunteers are knowledgeable. Don't miss the kitchen and the gardens! Worth the price of admission.

We came for a group tour w/ many first time visitors. Appeared to be geared more for school aged children & found there was too much down time & not very organized. Had to request the garden club, last minute, to show us the gardens since the outside grounds are pretty much self-guided. This was our main reason for visiting.... More

This is a great location to bring groups or anyone interested in history. The one thing I would note is there is lots of walking and few places to sit. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining.

Tryon Palace is the attraction to visit in New Bern. The stately home and grounds, plus the informative tour, gives you insight into the early colonial days of North Carolina and the USA. I especially like the garden areas as they sweep towards the river. The center is an easy walk to downtown and the many history buildings there. A... More

Tour guide and reconstructed Palace were great. The manicured gardens were fun to walk through on either side of the palace. The 20 dollar one day pass gave us access to the other historic sites in town, like the stanly and dixon house. Best bang for your buck if you see more than one site. Note: only a few items... More

We took a guided tour of the palace, which was interesting. We toured the gardens on our own. It was very hot in the sun, so we did not do anything else. It took us about an hour to do this.

We didn't go through the houses on this visit. We spent time in the gardens instead. It was clear that the gardens were probably at their best in Spring and early Summer

The History Center has a 'time machine' for visitors to go back to 1835(?). Once you arrive, there are activities for children which are fun. We took our two great granddaughters, and they had a blast!

Don't even think about skipping this incredible restoration of the inside of the Governor's Palace. Maybe we missed something, but the gardens worth no interesting. What was highly worthwhile seeing was the glorious restoration of the Palace. Do not skip! Take the tour. Bring your camera! Send pictures home.

The NC History Center is adjacent to Tryon Palace, a must-see attraction while in New Bern. A day pass is admission to both and is well worth the $20. The History Center presents the geological, political, environmental, and cultural history of eastern NC. Exhibits are extraordinarily well done and informative. Tryon Palace compares very favorably with Mount Vernon and Monticello... More
