Description:

Colonial Governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered and George...

Colonial Governors ruled, legislators debated, patriots gathered and George Washington danced. At Tryon Palace, where British rule once flourished, American independence took root and the state of North Carolina was born. Here you can still experience the adventure of North Carolina’s earliest beginnings and a living history like no other. Guided tours, live re-enactments and conversations with costumed interpreters from centuries past bring history to life in vivid detail at the Governor’s Palace, Gardens and Historic Homes. And, at the new high-tech North Carolina History Center, interactive games and hands-on exhibits delight visitors young and old. Whether you’re exploring one of our riverside gardens or sharpening your skills as a quilter, printer, ship’s captain or blacksmith, there are endless opportunities for making cherished family memories at Tryon Palace.

Much more than I expected

So - it was over 100 degrees (felt like 107 with humidity) when we went . Very hot! I expected a single building but this is so much more. The visitor center is a good place to... read more

Nothing special except when a special event or program is presented. There is no cost so it can be something to fill in some time.

So - it was over 100 degrees (felt like 107 with humidity) when we went . Very hot! I expected a single building but this is so much more. The visitor center is a good place to start and then you can see the palace, kitchen house, gardens and stables before venturing across the street for a couple of other... More

Several options for visiting at different prices. Upon asking, we were given a senior discount. The history center has several galleries including one geared towards children. The volunteers we met were knowledgeable and friendly. There is a gift shop and restaurant in the History Center. The building is relatively new and the exhibits are very well done. There is a... I went with my family ranging from ages 1 to 65. There isn't a lot for toddlers. My daughter got bored very quickly. It was also a lot of walking, so I would suggest going on a cooler day. It was very interesting and we enjoyed it.

Both sites have their plusses. The center has the interactive area and the walk through Carolina history exhibit. Something for the whole family. The palace and its grounds are great also. The best part of the palace is the docents. They are very knowledgeable and know a lot of backstorys to history.

If you are visiting New Bern, make it a priority to spend at least part of a day (maybe longer) here. It has something to appeal to all ages. The reconstructed Governor's Palace and surrounding buildings and the NC History Center showcase an important part of our colonial and maritime history. It is part of what makes New Bern special!... Plan on walking and climbing some stairs at the Palace. there are multiple houses to visit and there is a separate museum a few blocks away that is a really nice place to visit and get a lot of info about NC history. Park in one location and walk to all of the venues, along with the Middle Street shops... More
