Lake Hiawassee is beautiful... see photos! Ate a breakfast from McDonalds at a picnic table! Came upon the primitive cemetery that I didn't know what there. A shame it's not being taken care of. A shame campground is closed.

I camped there for 2 days on a cross country bicycle trip in 2011. I absolutely loved the place and did not want to leave. It is really too bad that funding was cut for the park and it was allowed to become un-maintained. It'll...More

We went in search of this recreation area for a day visit. Disappointed when we got there that most of the area was closed and run down. The trails were closed or not maintained. The vault toilets were not very clean. The boat launch and...More

Excellent if you like roughing it. Campground closed. Parking lots to most trails closed. Beautiful lake/reservoir, with little to no boat traffic. Too few trash receptacles lead to litter all around.

Stumbled upon the Hanging Dog Recreational area today while looking for lake access fishing. Plenty of lake access at the Recreational area, as long as you don't mind walking down from the standard water line due to the TVA determined water levels. My understanding is...More

A couple of side notes before I review the rec area. I was deeply sadden to see that the Hanging Dog Campground had closed. As it had been apart of the Cherokee County area for so many years. Next when visiting this rec area please...More

It's pretty rundown and the water level is very low. It is a good place to hike in solitude. We came to Murphy, NC for the autumn foliage and have not been disappointed. It is changing every day. With a little more maintenance, this would...More

Looks like the park lacks funding. It's sort of deteriorating, but if you dropped in a boat and went on the lake I'm sure would be great.

Visiting Lake Hiawassee is a must when in Cherokee County but this campground is a sad state of the federal governments commitment to enhancing the local economy and fostering a love for the outdoors. The campground is closed most of the time and should be...More

I took my inflatable Sea Eagle canoe up the short ride (5 miles) from Murphy on the twisting and scenic Joe Brown Rd and found the perfect spot to launch at Hanging Dog Rec Area. Quiet and clean, my dog and I paddled across and...More

Not sure about dogs. When I was there last year the place looked like it hadn't been maintained. Try calling the Tusquitee Ranger District @ 828-837-5152 for information.
