Strolling downtown Mt. Airy is a mixture of a small down and a sense of visiting Mayberry. A combination of retail stores, soda shops, cafes, candy stores, bakeries and ice cream shops. Plus on Saturday you may see Barney Fife (impersonator) guarding the city or an alpaca walking thru town. Enjoy this dynamics downtown with its array of shops. They also have some nice murals on walls.

We absolutely loved Mayberry!!! So many shops to check out and the people are so friendly. We met a Barney Fife look a like and even got our picture taken with an alpaca. You can take a ride in an old squad car through the town or even try one of the moonshine ice cream shakes (although we didn't care for it). It was a bit crowded and parking looked like a nightmare but we parked at the Andy Griffith Museum and walked through the town. If you love that small town feel then you definitely want to make a visit here!

We first went to the Andy Griffith Museum. It is small but has a lot of artifacts for those interested in Andy Griffith show and his life. We ate lunch at The Derby. A great place to eat with good comfort food at a reasonable price. The eatery has been there since the 30's and it is a walk back in time. The downtown has variety but I felt the merchandise was a bit pricy. We did not do the Squad car tour this time but it was very good in the past. Reserve your time ahead online is the best way to go. You will learn and see in person a lot of things about the town. We were disappointed the jail and replica courthouse were closed today with no explanation.

Always wanted to go. It was my mistake not seeing what was going on there before going! There was a festival and place was packed. Too many damn people. I was looking forward to the shops playing the theme song, or hearing recordings of Mr. Griffith singing, he was a musician.... Just loud music at a couple places, there was a small group of men playing instruments on the crowded sidewalk.... Too many people to visit the museum on this day. This place would be best to visit on a weekday afternoon. The shops just seemed like money grabs. Mi Casa on Main was a great place for lunch. Snappy Lunch had over an hour wait.

We arrived hungry & enjoyed lunch at Leon's Burgers on Main. Tasty burgers, drinks and sides for $27 for all three of us. Later we stopped by Miss Angel's where the Beef Tip Pie was heavenly the Lemon Pie divine! Don the Squad Car Driver was the best tour guide which took us by the quarry & Andy's childhood home. Then we visited the Jail and the Andy Griffith Museum which are a must!! The shops are amazing as is the ice cream & fudge (especially the Rocky Road and Salted Carmel). Then headed to Round Peak Vineyard for wine & live music 6-9 Friday evening! Tasted a flight of sweet wines which are not overly sweet & ordered cheese, crackers, olives, prosciutto, salami & figs!! What a fun day spent with my family for our birthdays. Such friendly people make up this town. We'll be back (and don't forget to stop & buy fun socks at the Renfro Sock Store on Main...just $1.50-$2.00 per pair vs. $12.00 each in other stores. What a great deal! Thank you Renfro).

We toured Mt. Airy and had planned to visit the Museum as we've always been fans of Andy Griffith. The museum was nice but $8.00 is a lot per person. Pictures, videos, and artifacts can be seen and heard online now. Asked about the downtown trolly but it was an hour wait. We spent maybe 20 minutes in the museum. Walked downtown and main street but it is a small town built around the Andy Griffith show as Mayberry. The mountain area on the Blue Ridge was fantastic and many free places to see along the way were worth the trip. We stayed at the Mayberry Campgrounds and it was lovely and quiet.

Mayberry Fan Visitors be advised they roll up the sidewalk at 5pm and some restaurants are even closed on Monday which is unusual for a tourist town. So if you want to eat in one of the TV show themed eateries you must EAT EARLY.
Antique shops, Mayberry themed fast Food, and souvenier shops make up the bulk of the businesses. There are few or no practical stores like clothing, botiques, hardware, computer, or drug stores. One exception is Floyd's a legit barber shop where you can still actually get a haircut. I suspect that without its connection to the vaunted TV Show downtown would consist of a collection of abandonded shops like most of America's village main streets. If the town fathers really wanted to preserve the essence of Mayberry they should have prevented the nearby suburban shopping sprawl on the AG HWY with protective zoning laws.
Alas, the show has not been off TV since it originally aired in 1961 so at least for now you can enjoy what remains of a nostalgic rural American downtown.

Fun little city main street with many shops realted to the Andy Griffith show. THe diner downtown was great for breakfast with many pictures of the stars of the show. The town has made an industry out of the Andy Griffith show and it seemed fun. There were Opie's Candy shop, Floyd's Barbershop and a few others. The main drive is a short walk and is walking distance to the Andy Griffith Museum. There is also a replica of the courthouse and the "fillin" station nearby.

Nice place to stroll and enjoy the shops, restaurants and museum. Check out the regional history museum, have an ice cream cone in the afternoon, have a porkchop sandwich for lunch. They even have a movie theater.

I found some really cool stuff in these shops. Also, a man was walking around with a dressed up Llama that you can get your picture made with. I could have spent many hours in downtown Mt. Airy.
