Draft Patrol Car Tour

Wow! A Patrol car tour really gets one in the Mayberry spirit. First on arriving at Wally’s Service Station on a Saturday morning it is busy and exciting. We take time to check out the station with unique items, see the tow truck, the Darlin’ truck, Darlin Farm, and Courthouse. Other old cars were there on our visit. We hop in a Patrol Car like Andy and Barney drove. Our grandson rode shotgun with the rest of us in the back. Our driver, Mike Jones, pushes the siren as we head out. It is an interesting, educational, and fun tour on Andy Griffith, Mayberry, and Mt. Airy. First stop is the Open-air granite quarry. Huge and impressive. As Mike tours us thru town he shares a lot about Andy Griffith growing up, his acting career and success of the Andy Griffith show. Plus, he points out other interesting things in Mt. Airy. We really enjoyed the tour and have an even better appreciation for Andy Griffith, Don Knotts, the show and the town of Mt. Airy.

We had a great time on this tour . Don’t miss it . Our guide , Steve, was personable and extremely knowledgeable - and a fun guy to spend 30-40 minutes with while tooling around Mayberry. He is also a life - long resident of Mount Airy . Our picture , showing the two words of us , plus our 9 pound Fox Terrier being frisked alongside the squad car, is priceless . We’ll be back!

We took the Squad Car Tour and it was everything we had heard it was and more. The tour lasts about 30 minutes but with our tour guide it was worth every penny. Ask for Steve as your guide, he is excellent. He is born and raised in Mt. Airy, NC. He’s very knowledgeable and extremely funny.

Taking the Mayberry Squad Car Tour in Mayberry is a must-do if you are visiting. It's like the Empire State building in NY or the boat ride at Niagrara. You may think the $50 fee is pricy for a 40 minute ride in a hot car but that's $50 for the whole car so if you bring another couple or 2 kiddies it comes to $12.50 per person. It's a good chance to get the layout of the town and see a few things not highlighted in the tv show. Car buffs will enjoy the classic sixties Fords. There are other vehicles at Wally's Fillin Station where you can relax with a Peach NEHI soda.

In town for the day and decided to do this. Mark was our driver and he was GREAT! We had so much fun! He turned on the siren and 'raced to town b/c someone stole a goat'. Just something about riding around town in one of these cars made the experience of Mt Airy so much better. To me, this is MUST DO if you are in town to learn about Andy and experience 'Mayberry' in NC!

We thought this tour was going to be about an hour of site seeing around Mt. Airy, full of tidbits of local hero Andy Griffith. Our 30 minute tour for $50 was a trip to the granite quarry and a drive by Andy’s childhood home. The tour guide spoke nonstop about the quarry, but he showed us little of the town. We returned within 30 minutes to Wally’s Station, our starting point. The guide never gave us a chance to ask questions; he never said a word about Barney Fife or Opie. This was a bit of a disappointment for us all. We watched other tours go through town and on streets we never saw as their tour guide pointed out sites. I am not recommending this tour.

Authentic 1960's Ford Galaxy 500's repainted to look like the squad car from the Andy Griffith Show. My guide (Mark) provided a huge amount of information about the show and the town. Certainly one of the most unique tours vehicles I've been in. This should be a "must do" when you visit.

This was fun. Probably because my wife and I have seen nearly every episode of The Andy Griffith Show while we were locked down in 2020.

The driver had some interesting factoids and it's cool that the Tour begins and ends at Wally's Service Station.

Would we do it again??? Probably not. But it was fun to do once. After all ... it's not every day that you get to ride in the back seat of a 1962 Ford Galaxie Squad Car with working siren.

Just know that there - amazingly - are no public restrooms at Wally's Service Station or at the Gift Shop/High School/Courthouse next door. And I'm guessing that they're tired of being asked because they get a little snippy.

Great tour!! Our guide was Mike, who is from Mt. Airy. He said all their drivers are from Mt. Airy & know the area very well. To be honest, I was a little reluctant to spend $40, but it was worth EVERY PENNY! It was the highlight of our day in Mayberry.

This tour was a blast! We loved hearing the tidbits about the show's stars and touring just like Barney. Our driver lived in Mount Airy for 68 years and was very knowledgeable about the granite quarry and it's history. Being from NH it was cool that Mount Airy is the Granite City while NH is the Granite State. Our tour guide ran the siren shouting Citizens Arrest and told us facts about the cars used in the show. It was a great way to check out the city!
