There are several good dive ops in the SOBX, but Tortuga is a terrific choice if you want to avoid the bigger boats with lots of divers. The Tortuga is also a very stable boat, which meant that we were able to get out to the offshore wrecks on a day when the conditions kept all of the other boats inshore. Captain James creates a relaxed, but professional atmosphere on the boat, which makes for an enjoyable day on the water. I should also point out that, after getting blown out for several days in a row, James went out of his way to make sure we were able to dive on our last day. We would definitely dive with Tortuga again.

Really enjoyed diving with the Captain and first mate - they really know the water here. We visited some epic dive sites and caught some of the biggest lobster ever. Boat can be a little cramped if filled with divers but it works out OK. No bathroom on the boat but that's OK with me. Also great for fishing, the first mate pulled in a Mahi during one of our surface intervals...pretty cool.

Although I've lived in Morehead City, NC for 20 years and have been blowing bubbles for over 40 years both as a sport and commercial diver, I'm not a fan of the two local longtime "cattle boat" diving operations. I've never been diving offshore here until booking a seat on the "Tortuga," after being invited by another local diver. With Captain Ken at the helm and Joyce as dive master, we dove the "Suloide" and then moved over to the recently and intentionally sunk tug as an artificial reef (May 7, 2016) intentionally sunk tug artificial James J. Francesconi. In all the years I've been diving, this is by far the most laid back, professionally and safely run sport diving operation in the area. They the crew is courteous, professional and eager to help. and they don't rush the surface interval! The boat is roomy and only a 6-pack. Tank rentals / Nitrox available if your traveling and they'll be waiting on the boat so no need to visit a shop the day before your trip to rent.

I write this review to help people distinguish who they should charter. I have been fortunate enough to dive in multiple placed across the world and this captain and crew are the best I have ever seen. I have dived other prominent operations in the Morehead area and the friendliness, competence, and enjoyment of Tortuga was the best. Within minutes of meeting the crew I really did feel like family.

Response from James R, Owner at Tortuga Dive Charters - Day Tours

Amy, thank you for your kind words. We certainly enjoyed having you guys on the Tortuga and hope you will join us again soon. Having such pleasant people and competent divers on the boat makes our job a breeze. Hopefully we have earned your loyalty, but do not hesitate to continue to dive with the other operators here in Morehead. It is without question the most competent and safe dive fleet on the east coast. Everyone here is top notch.

This past weekend I dove four two tank days with Tortuga. This was my third trip with this boat operator. The captain and mates are professional and gregarious. Safety first, but certainly fun as a close second. This is a six pack dive boat that caters to experienced, advanced certified divers. On this particular trip, I did some solo diving and some buddy diving. We dove the Hardees, the Suloide, the Hutton and the Aeolis wrecks. Seas at most were 3' to slick calm and water temps were in the upper 70s at depth and low 80s on the surface. Currents ranged from non-existent to fairly strong and vis from 25' - 60'. There is a fin friendly ladder and a head on board. During surface intervals we spotted turtles and dolphins, listened to music and relaxed. On previous trips, we went to some of the beautiful limestone ledges off the coast to hunt lobsters and spearfish. The Captain definitely has some great spots to take you if you like hunting. When unexpected things occur, like a diver from a different boat surfacing next to the Tortuga with less Than 250 pounds in his tank, the crew was quick to respond and swam a line out to the diver and brought him on board. Communication was clear and quick and before long the wayward diver was once again back on his own dive boat. I have been diving the waters off of NC for about 15 years now and have had many experiences with different operators and captains. Not all dive operators or captains are the same. My previous boat captain has retired and he recommended the Tortuga to me. What an excellent suggestion as it is truly a fine operation and I look forward to diving with them for many more summers.
